The Star and the Car is a documentary about Gary Goltz, and how his love of the 50's TV series HIGHWAY PATROL led to restoring a 1955 Buick to the appearance of Broderick Crawford's car used on the classic show. Visit Gary's Buick Website: garysbuick.com/
Along the way, Gary used Crawford's persona combined with a judo discipline to become a successful businessman. Gary's upward mobility landed him in California, where he met the surviving HIGHWAY PATROL cast members and crew. When a '55 Buick came up for sale, Gary bought it and six months later was driving a fully decked out replica of Crawford's car. From there, it was non-stop charity events for the CHP's 11-99 Foundation and other worthy causes...and more than a few celebrity encounters. From the 50's to the 21st century...it's a great ride!
The STAR and the CAR World Premiere screening was held July 29, 2018, at the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, California. Hosted by 'Shotgun' Tom Kelly, a behind-the-scenes Q & A was held for 150 attendees. A panel discussion followed - • The STAR and the CAR W...

As an 11 year old, I was glued to my grandparents' 15" round screen Dumont console television set when Broderick Crawford and Highway Patrol aired.....Cisco Kid, too. My grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, too. My uncle, Dad's brother, bought a new '55 Buick. I was fascinated by the exploding postwar automotive industry and knew every new make and model on the road. My first car was a '53 Nash Rambler, red and black two tone with a Continental kit housing the spare tire on the back bumper. I've never gotten over my love for old cars. I own seven now having just added a thirty-one year old Bentley Mulsanne S to my auto insurance policy.

Never underestimate the power those seemingly SMALL events in our lives can lead to. The influence of this Fantastic TV show caused this man to replicate the car in homage To Broderick Crawford, brought HIM into contact with so MANY more people and has spread as much joy to others as it has to its owner. All because a small boy was influenced by a big man and a big car. A wonderful tribute to an amazing actor. Bravo.

Yeah, getting so drunk that BC routinely passed out on the set while shooting. He never was allowed to drive a car except on a movie set with direct supervision. He is well known with MADD. Some of the sets were shot with him laying on the floor, way too drunk to stand. Numerous sources used i ncluding ImDB and wikipedia.

Amen......and just about everyone could be a decent shade tree mechanic ( as long as you had a good set of tools and a Haynes manual) You also had plenty of elbow room to get around the engine compartment and didn't need 20K worth of diagnostic equipment to repair/replace a fuel pump...those were the days.....

My grandad had a 54, 55, and a 57 Buick, also a 58 Pontiac Chieftan. Man...seing those cars fully restored in the classic car websites brings back tears and memories. I have two classic cars my self, and Mr Goltz was spot on when he said in the telecast that when people see these cars, their response is "OFF THE HOOK", and when I drive either one of my classics, especially when I have them both in car shows @ the same time. I am 75 years in age and when Highway Patrol would air, I'm sitting right there to watch, and would never miss a telecast. This video was amazing. Thank You Mr Goltz!

This is a great story, because I, too, watched "Highway Patrol" with my grandma. When I went to college, in the early 70s, they were showing re-runs of the show in the late afternoon, and soon, I had the whole fraternity watching the show after classes. Finally, we decided that October 4th (10-4) should be "Broderick Crawford Day" on campus. We bought 50's suits and Fedora's from local thrift stores and we were the image of Dan Matthews! Awesome show.

I watched the show as a kid in New Mexico for some time before we moved in November '60, right after I turned six years old. Broderick Crawford and this show is the direct reason that I went into ham radio! From the first time I saw Crawford standing outside his car talking on his radio I had a burning desire to have a radio in my car someday. It wasn't long after I started driving when I had one, and have never gone without one since. He influenced me that much!

Nice trip down Memory Lane, Gary. I loved the show. Broderick Crawford's rapid-fire speech was amazing, as was the use of a road block to fight every type of crime. From reading the credits of episodes I learned that the position of "Audio Supervisor" was sometimes filled by Quinn Martin, who later formed QM Productions, the company that produced "The Fugitive," "The Streets of San Francisco," and other programs.

what a wonderful video. coincidentally, i have recently watched several dozen episodes of highway patrol, mostly because i really love the old cars. the episodes are super cheesy, produced strictly on the cheap, and are just fabulous. they used a '54 ford convertible over and over for a villain car, just hilarious! thanks for a great look at this moment in american tv.

Agree on the production value of these old shows, love watching the "Booper's" that went right threw to broadcasting, Wonder how many of the 'extra' cars on the show were really the crews own vehicles?? The Ford panel van must have been part of the production crews van, same van in the shows it was used, and later had the roof rack added........All in all, great show for the times, and fun to watch today. Classic TV!!!

Yeah, use another brand of vehicle for the villains... Reminds me that a grey Chevy Vega was in almost every episode of Rockford Files... probably for the crew to get around in... usually just parked, but in 3 or 4 episodes a character in the story drove it or got into or out of it...

I grew up in the now-GHETTO city of Stockton, CA. This is where "All the King's Men" was filmed... BOY did the old-timers have LOTS of stories about Crawford. He got around town, and he seemed to be a friendly guy. A lot of those people were extras in the downtown shooting. Alas, the "capital" building that was used in the film (the old courthouse) was razed in 1961.

Wow! What a super fan!! I was born in '59, but the show was on afternoons in the early '70's in Southern California and I couldn't wait to get home to watch it. Already, I was interested in how much California had already changed in only 15-17 years. Most of what appeared rural in the show, had already been built up. I guess I was always interested in the history of life around me. As for Buicks, when I moved to Utah in the late '80's, I bought a '54 Special. I think there were many similarities between '54 & '55 including the engines. But I loved that car. As a result, I grew to have a great appreciation for Buicks overall. Sad to see what they've become lately however... Thank you for the great video and memories!!

I was 16 years old in 1969 and I had a two tone green and white, 1955 buick 2 door hardtop that I paid $75 for it , i would spend hours doing burnouts in that ole buick, driving backwards in reverse and then floor the gas pedal and drop her down in drive and do burnouts after burnouts after burnouts , My friends would hang out the back windows to watch the tires smoking. I tried to kill that car the summer 69. I couldn't do it! I abused it and sold it to my neighbor for 50 bucks, it kept on running . One day me and my 3 buddies skipped high school and we pooled all the money we had in our pockets and come up with 75 cents total, we drove that car all day and all night, all over des Moines , Those were the days my friend. I love the ole highway patrol show , I am thoroughly enjoying them again, thank you.

GARY---THANK YOU----I enjoyed the TV show and Mr Crawford----it was one of my top shows when it comes to my memories of being a boy back in that era. I started as a junior firefighter in 1964---retired as a professional firefighter last November----after 46 years with the same department that I was hired on after my USAF discharge in 1972. I used to have a 1948 Plymouth fire chief's car and participated in all kinds of parades and events----so I know how much fun you are having with your tribute Buick. As a side note--I do still have a top of the line 1994 BUICK ROADMASTER Station wagon--strictly a LUXURY LAND YACHT. Thank you for the excellent video----thank you for the memories----and my sincere best wishes go out to you.

Fantastic video, enjoyed it tremendously. Love watching the old Highway Patrols, seeing the cars of my youth. For you to have been able to recreate the car and share it with so many others must be very rewarding. 10-4

Just happened across this great video. Excellent job. I very well remember watching Broderick Crawford starring in Highway Patrol on our family's small screen black and white TV. To me, it was like yesterday. Regards, John

I really enjoyed this. Well done, thanks. In the early 70's, Broderick Crawford made trips to Syracuse, N.Y. Twice he was involved in traffic accidents, at least one of which put him in the hospital. If he had your car, perhaps he could have gotten around more safely.

My dad and I always watched California Highway Patrol. My dad admired Broderick's style. Living in the backwoods of Montana where snow was on the ground most of the year, I was mesmerized by the California towns and landscape. I moved to Los Angeles upon finishing college...I was there before the graduation ceremony took place. I still enjoy watching the old episodes. I wish I would imitate Broderick Crawford but there was only one of him.

"Tin 4" Gary. My college chemistry professor made a joking reference to one of Broderick Crawford's expressions: "ten-4" when we were studying the various isotope forms of Tin. This was one of the series I loved to watch as a kid in the mid to late 50s.

Thank you for sharing, I was also fan of the series. As I am watching, an event you note brings back a lot of memories! I was an NBC PAGE in Burbank. The week Brodrick hosted SNL I was in NY and at the series, what a great time I had. I had full access, so got to meet everyone! The musical guest was Dr. John, who was one of y mom's clients, small word. Also running around backstage that night was Linda Ronstadt!

Thank you for this video but more so for all you have done to maintain the memory and life of a great car, fantastic part of my youth and the man that made the Highway Patrol show come to lifeb in our living room. It would be a highlight of my life to see your restoration. To sit behind the wheel would be a dream. THANK YOU!

I can remember as you do watching "Hiway Patrol" I always associated the show with the Buick Roadmaster and Mr. Crawford. In fact it wasn't until i purchased the series that i knew that they ever used any other cars on the series. I bet you I've watched the series a hundred times. Thank you so much for this upload.
