Comprehensible Japanese

Comprehensible Japanese

Жыл бұрын

I’m Yuki Kimura, a native Japanese speaker living in Fukuoka, Japan. I make Japanese lesson videos to help learners to acquire Japanese in the most natural and fun way.
Let me give you a quick introduction to my teaching method and how it’s effective.
My teaching method is based on Dr. Krashen’s Input hypothesis. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a famous linguist in the field of second language acquisition, says that we learn language in only one way. And that is when we understand messages. When we understand what we hear and read.
I will not be teaching you Japanese grammar rules or giving you a list of useful expressions. Instead, I will be talking to you in “Comprehensible Japanese”.
In my videos,
・I talk all in Japanese, slowly and clearly.
・I talk in simple and short sentences.
・I use high-frequency words repeatedly in the form that they would be used in actual conversation.
・I draw pictures and use gestures while speaking.
・I often rephrase sentences and use synonyms.
I do all these things to make the content comprehensible for you, to make sure that you understand messages.
Forget that it’s in a foreign language. Just sit and enjoy watching my videos, and you will get used to the sounds of the Japanese language and gradually start picking up words and expressions and even grammar in the contexts.
Hundreds more videos are available on our website. (cijapanese.com/)

I was studying using Duolingo, but I felt frustrated because I was able to answer all the questions but once I started a new lessons I struggled because I wasn't really understanding. Then, looking for some videos I found the Stephen Krashen's old video conference, and found the Comprehensible Input Method, and I really enjoy watching your videos because I can understand. Now I know that it takes time to be able to speak and I enjoy the process. Thanks for your videos Yuki sensei.

I tried Duolingo once and it was awful for Japanese because they just throw kanji at you ☹️ I didn’t remember them having any grammar lessons either. I found LingoDeer, which is better for Japanese, and a similar style of app. But it’s still not a great way to learn either kanji nor grammar… I’ve had some success memorizing with it, but it offers very limited use cases for sentences. So, this feels better for learning different ways of saying the same thing and for acquiring a wider range of related vocabulary. Also, memorizing grammar doesn’t work for speaking and it ends up being frustrating learning it. So, comprehensible input is definitely the way to go. 👍

Stuff like this is getting me to learning verbs much faster than duolingo. And you know, a 100% less kanji (since not everyone needs to learn those). Thank you!

Thank you for this video. What is the difference between 「死んでしまいました」 and 「死んでいます」?
@jgsh8062
@jgsh8062 Жыл бұрын
This is a conjugation pattern commonly used for events that are regrettable. By taking the て-form of a verb, and connecting it with しまう, and then conjugating that, you are essentially saying the event is unfortunate. So, she took the て-form of 死ぬ, 死んで, and added しまう to form 死んでしまう. She then conjugated this in the normal way -> 死んでしまいました. So, 「お父さんは死んでしまいました」means "unfortunately the father is dead" whereas 「お父さんは死んでいます」would simply mean "the father is dead".

Brilliant lesson. This story is very revealing of Japanese ideology, compared to the Western fairy tales where weakness always results in death. But I feel sorry for Japanese people who give up everything to others and expect money to fall from the sky, but it never happens. If the 'money' was metaphorical it might make a better moral children's story.

If you missed it, the title says that this came from _Grimms' Fairy Tales,_ which means that the story is actually a Western/European tale, not Japanese. A good story regardless of where it came from though.

Since this is a fairytale, I doubt anyone is expecting actual money to fall from the sky, any more than they’re expecting a baby to come out of a giant peach.
