My grandfather told me a long time ago that we were not made for this world. He told stories about the starships that brought him and my grandmother here, how it was only meant to be for a few years to support his planet's war, and that they were supposed to go back. "We're not supposed to be here!" is something he would say with sharp resentment in his last days. He wouldn't say much of anything else. All he remembered was that the starships were late. It made me sad to see his final days spent in bitterness, but I suppose I can't blame him. His old stories about the Earth's oceans, rivers, and endless forest sounded like paradise. Soil so pure you could toss a seed wherever you wish and it would sprout into a tree that would feed you forever... sounds all too good to be true. Who wouldn't want to go back to that? Who would want to leave... Growing enough food here for us and our cattle is backbreaking work, but it's all we got. I don't want to burden my children with heartbreaking stories about a world where it doesn't have to be like this. I've hidden this note along with the last books we have left. Because hope is a cruel burden when we know the starships never pass by here anymore. I won't let the next generation feel like outsiders in the only world they'll ever know.

Something about this image and music does evoke those feelings. A flashback struck me to my childhood days in late 80s and reading science fiction magazines with American SF authors like Brin, Benford, Philip K. Dick and all these fascinating images of alien vistas and life, far future promises of progress and adventure...What became of my awe, fascination and hope ? This track and music makes me want to break free again...To look at the stars and wonder like I did before...

There's something eeriely beautiful about an abandoned place. Makes you think about the stories, the tales...the efforts put in there. I feel this way on the way to work I pass a dead old yellow house with an old dead white car in the front. I just imagine that it was someone’s little castle once, and their life just happened there…and then it didn’t. It’s not too far from an old school that became a cancer hospital and is now a graffiti exposition. So crazy to see actual “ruins” like these.

I had a dream once, where I was an ancient being, walking the long abandoned streets of Earth. everywhere was empty of moving life, no humans, no animals, not even insects as far as I could tell, just plants. yet, I wasn't truly alone, I had with me the memories of the people long past. everywhere I went, I could feel their feelings, and hear their words and their thoughts. some places were just wonderful to be around, competitions, shopping districts, fairs, these places always had "life" in them. They were places of stories and soul. some were, more sorrowful, though I don't remember these parts very much, I do remember the feelings of stress, pain, heartache, and anger. I remember I had an obvious preference of where I wanted to be, and it was the places people loved and needed. your comment reminded me of that dream. it was a good dream.

The last men left through aqueous sky and left me and all the others behind. There are no more crews returning: every mineral pockmark plucked and sent away, away, away. Day’s light sinks low behind the space ports, Canteens and observation decks, and the dark reveals the satellites, darting in and out - the little specks, remnants of those who built us: watching, watching, watching the automatons toil till their parts wear out below. Working though the jobs are done, each a withered edifice on this lonely outcrop, teeming with a life of another kind. the starships never pass by here anymore: they left us all behind.

...but we haven't needed them for years. Replicator tech was brought to us when I was young. Whatever we wanted, whatever we could imagine, we created for ourselves, never knowing hunger, or cold, or damp. These have been happy years to live. But I wonder. We have complete self-sufficiency in these miraculous machines, these replicators. We have no need to reach out, to cry out for the star-engines to bring their life-giving cargoes to our planet's surface. Knowing we had no need of them, they left. We depend on no one, and no one depends on us. Are we now alone in our infinite plenty?

Systems were good before, but when emergency wake kicked in, Maps said that we may have passed through a Nova shower or something, and got no StarWarning of that and also no luck. If you, sir, allows for the ship, we'll be around for the time until we can get a merchant or something passing by the star... I can pay for the staying. We'll be no trouble, I'll be mostly on sleep meanwhile. Maps and Jenkins are very kind, knowledgeable. I wouldn't have it otherwise. "The starships never pass by here anymore," Ralthama said. Her age was up for debate, but she was suspected of being the oldest among the colonists, and her dangerous teachings were often conducted in secret. "We stopped wondering why." She shrugged as she moved from the steps of the catafalque and towards the cave, with the children surrounding her, each one eagerly searching the skies for any trace of anomaly. "It's true," she continued, ushering the last of the group into the makeshift classroom. "That is why we no longer get any pizza deliveries. Papa Gino's. Domino's. Pizza Hut. Gone. I remember a time when such things fell into this world like raindrops from the sky. Like manna from Heaven. Now, children, it's your generation's turn to wonder."

We were frankly lucky to find such a quiet, out of the way planet, and the crew and passangers felt relieved to finally make planetfall. For effectively the last 4 years, our ragged fleet had been flying at FTL speeds, only stopping to refuel and aquire supplies for the journey. Four bitter years of heading out into the uncharted void trying to stay ahead of the Solar Confederation's persecution and likely, summary execution for every soul in the fleet. You see, we are all mutants of some form or other, and as the SC view mutants as subhumans... Well, I'm sure you can get the picture.... Something, something; history repeating... My own vessel, a worn out and ancient, but miraculously still very functional frigate by the name of the Bifrost was the first member of the fleet- I stole it from a forgotten orbital scrapyard with some friends. Over time, we gathered more of our kin as we travelled through SC territories, filling out our crew and adding more vessels as the downtrodden and disaffected flocked to our banner. And of course, we eventually found our new home- a habitable world in the Goldilocks zone of a star comparable to Sol, a world with two moons strange geology, and breathable atmosphere. It was pretty much perfect. An old, abandoned but still working cargo station hung over the world that we simply named Sanctuary Prime. On board this tarnished and battered hulk, after gaining access to sensor logs and terminals, we learned that not a single vessel had come to this system in nearly two centuries. Jackpot... A grand referendum was held across every vessel in the fleet, and it was unanimously decided that it was here that we would make our new home. The people were under no false impressions- this would be the very hardest of hard work. But, as former slaves, we were accustomed to exactly that, heh. After unloading all our equipment, we got to work immediately, even to the point of cannibalising some of our ships for materiel. Homes were built rapidly, infrastructure soon after. Schools, hospitals, farms and foundries- you name it, we built it. After years of toil and hardship, I stand now in my garden filled with alien flowers, tucked just behind my cozy little home on an asphalt street- a bottle of cold beer in my hand as I look to the alien world that we have begun to colonise. My wife and young son stand with me. The starships don't pass here any more. I smile at the thought. We are finally free.

All the systems on the third Radcliffe bend say the same. The old routes of the last century don’t make sense anymore, now that the new engines can cross the void in the same time it used to take to system-hop just halfway round the bend. And frankly there’s simply nothing there that makes a detour worth the time and expense. So the third-bend Radcliffe worlds are basically on their own, and are perfect magnets for a certain class of fugitives and discontents. Someday, perhaps, their great-great grandchildren will develop something that lures the starships back once more.

The planet of Hydrax IV, previously known as Eden was a agriworld, home to a population of 1 billion. Along with its orbiting moon Hydrax V, a vast red forge world that acted as Eden's shield against the dark unknowns of space, it also acted as the seat of power in the system. Now Eden's moon serves as a grim reminder of its folly in choosing the wrong side in a war that would consume the not just the system but the sector and beyond. Pock marked and scarred is the surface of Hydrax V, evidence of orbital lance and antimatter bombardment is visible even to the naked eye standing on the dusty plains of Eden. What used to be a lush planet of agri domes, wind and solar farms, along with wonderous floating landmasses on which the settlers built their glass cities on is now a dried up windswept husk of a world. The starships never pass by here anymore and what was once green Eden, jewel of the sector, is now simply Hydrax IV a tombworld waiting to fade into the mists of time and space.

*Something has gone wrong within the wider galaxy. We only know some of the details. Avaros IV had never been a particularly vibrant part of the Interstellar Federation. We were as far from Terra as our generation ship could reach. Avaros IV was chosen for being out of the way of trade routes. We valued our independence and isolation. On occasion, we would trade what resources we could with various vessels and learned of the wider galaxy. When the machine uprising began, we destroyed our STC systems and other automated devices. The last contact we had with the wider galaxy was a captain who was reporting that faster than light travel was becoming more and more difficult. "Storms in the Warp" was what he had said. It has been 500 years. The starships never pass by here anymore and I suspect they never will again~ Avaros IV colonial archivist Miranda Isoue, dated M25, recovered in 999 M30 by the 50th expeditionary Fleet of the Great Crusade*

If we ever have faster than light travel, and we colonize space like in Dune, over millions and millions of years, then we're bound to have this happened...As the universe expands, everything recedes away from any given point, and someday people from forgotten colonies would look up at the night sky, and not see a single star...They'd think that the legends of other colonies existing and themselves coming from another planet would just be fantaisies dreamed up by the ancients. They'd make their own theories about how they came to be on this planet of theirs, and would never question if there was anything out there.

I still remember the nomads. Every year, a clan would arrive in their slender ships, pitch their embroidered tents, and teach for eight days. About medicine, smelting metal, practical things, but also music, poetry, their gods, their laws. They never accepted our gifts. As years passed, the visits grew rarer, and the ships fewer. The nomads taught less and reminisced more: about their parents, or the games they played as children. Had we been poor pupils? No, they said, they were glad we still listened. But they were short on time. We waited almost ten years for the last visit. A single ship, crewed only by a quiet old man who used to be a potter. He told us about a time before the ships, the cliff city where he was raised, digging clay by a wide river under a deep red sun. He asked us, please, not to forget. The starships don't come here any more.

I am tired... There are some days where I feel it more now than others, and it does weigh on me. I miss being able to do so much. Honestly, those times when I had my meth addiction and relapse were amazing to me, because I was able to stay up for so long without rest and just... do. Playing guitar. Repairing things. Reading. Gaming. That level of constant going, going, going is now behind me, a distant echo of a person I once was. A shimmer in the fabric of time of when so much felt novel; when time in this mortality felt boundless and endless. Now the many sleepless days and nights are gaining upon me, as though the encroaching dawn; as though the hound after the fox... Truly, the phrase, “so much to do, so little time” has now found its’ way to me and I am saddened a bit that I am able to only do so much. It takes more energy these days where once upon a time, the energy felt as though it had no end; felt like it could not be depleted... The addictions are behind me... but still the echoes and memories persist, albeit now more shallow than ever before...

It started so long ago... The first Spelljammer pirates dwelved to greedily and eagerly into this land, looking for whatever treasure or valuables they could find. They expected to find jewels, gold, silver, mythril... _What they found... was_ *_Death._* The pirates were so greedy and bloodthirsty, they didn't see the Ichor they had dug into until it was too late. *_While looking to slake their greed, they found the immortal body... Of Pandorym._* Our protector. Our redeemed guardian. Her power terrified the Gods, but she was a waking nightmare to those who slaughtered our people in The Retroverse. But her brutality had a price. The ships don't come here anymore. Because of our benevolent savior was once one of the Elder Evils, even the supply ships do not stop here, unless theyvare desperate. ...It has been... Lonely... on this planet, without the Federation giving news. By the Old Gods, it is so lonely...

This just... sounds like the theme song to my life. Kind of a desolate wasteland of an existence. No one visits. I feel like an old person at the end of their life, who outlived everyone they knew and is being forgotten by the young. Only. I am young. All those people simply outgrew me, and at this rate, they will vastly outlive me. And in a year or so after my final event, none will even remember that I even existed. It's miserable, but to be honest. I don't know how to do anything else but languish in my own thoughts. I used to think of my childhood as idyllic. And it probably was, by comparison. But now the good memories are fading. All that's left is the pervasive loneliness that was buried underneath. Spending hours in my room, silently playing with toys, imagining their lives and conversations. Now I do that with pencils and paper, writing, writing. It's... not good. I'm not good at it. And I'm sure I come across as spoiled, for even being able to lock myself away. But the truth is that I'm helpless. Incapable of independence. Like a cat who's been declawed. Or, more accurately, born deformed. When my owner realizes I'm boring, or worse, dies, I will wither immediately. I don't have drive to do that which one must to survive. Besides, the resources to do so are so far away. This country is a wasteland of space. So I'm effectively stranded. There is no one, not for miles. But, even if there were. They wouldn't help me. The people here only care for themselves. And if they didn't, they still wouldn't help me. I've always been quiet and unapproachable. The only thing I have to protect myself is to instill fear. And I can't trust anyone. Not anymore. Fear to rule them, fear to rule me. Loneliness is the punishment for being born. The punishment for disgracing their lives with my genesis.

The other day, coming back from the scavenging, I overheard a group of foreigners talk in the local tavern. I had never seen foreigners before, so I stayed later than usual, until everyone from the search party was gone except me. I could only understand them when they spoke directly to old Remé, in a very thick accent, asking for "the coding". They described it as an opaque green rod, not longer than a grown up's forearm. They where very insistent in that it doesn't look like much, but it's worth more than it seems. Remé just listened, nodding and bringing more drinks as they requested. In time, they became friendlier and closer. At one point, they begun describing the engravings, in amazing detail. That tempted me to speak up about my mother's gift, which I immediately recognized in their words, but I kept it to myself. "You are too young, others can out-power you" I thought. So I kept listening. "It's the key that will open the moon's gate", one of them said, before being yelled at and shushed by the rest. Remé didn't know what to make of it, so he laughed and offered more drinks and meals. They seemed friendly, yet scared. I know fear when I see it. I also know where they landed. I'm going with them back to the skies, with or without you.

"I know your uncle says that like it's a bad thing. He likes to say the Federation abandoned us, leaving us to die on this craggy rock when the tar ran out... I see the brighter side. They're not sending us to war anymore. ...Right, you don't know that word. You know how sometimes we hunt a Terodan for dinner? Imagine people like you and me doing that to each other. In groups so large you can't see the end of them. Doing it because someone beyond our skies, forever away from here, wants to take the tar in the ground from the guy who got here first. Life here isn't great... But it's peaceful. If the starships ever pass by here again, be wary. They may bring prosperity... Or they may bring war."

Elara stood at the precipice of her floating island, the azure expanse stretching endlessly above and below. The floating islands, ancient and enigmatic, hovered with a grace that defied understanding, their rocky undersides adorned with lush greenery and the remnants of a bygone civilization. These stone ruins, weathered by time and solitude, whispered of a grandeur lost to the void. The vast planet hung in the sky, an ever-present sentinel, its surface a tapestry of swirling dust and deep orange hues. Elara's eyes traced the faint trails of distant starships, spectral lines etched into the ether, fading like the memories of those who once traversed these skies. The air was thick with an ethereal stillness, a silence that spoke of ages past and the inexorable march of time. The starships never pass by here anymore, Elara mused, her thoughts a blend of sorrow and wonder. The skies, once alive with the hum of engines and the glow of distant suns, were now a silent testament to the impermanence of all things. Her fingers absently caressed an old insignia, a relic of those halcyon days, found amid the crumbling stone. It was a symbol of her grandfather's era, a time when the heavens were a realm of endless possibilities. A rustle behind her disrupted the stillness, and Elara turned to see her brother, Kian, approaching with the cautious curiosity of youth. His eyes, wide and bright, reflected the yearning that Elara herself felt. "Will they ever come back?" he asked, his voice a mere whisper carried away by the wind. Elara's smile was tinged with melancholy. "We must carve our own destiny from the silence." Kian nodded, though the shadow of disappointment clouded his face. He had never seen the starships up close, never felt the exhilaration of their presence in the ports. For him, the tales of starfarers were as intangible as the mist that cloaked the ruins each morning. Elara longed to bridge that gap, to bring the past into his present. Together, they ventured through ruined ancient archways, the grandeur diminished by the encroaching vines and moss. The air was heavy with the scent of earth and forgotten dreams. As they wandered deeper, Elara felt the weight of history pressing upon them, an almost tangible presence that seemed to guide their steps. The wind shifted, bringing with it a faint, haunting melody-a song of the stars, woven from the whispers of the cosmos. Elara paused, closing her eyes to embrace the sound. With renewed resolve, Elara led Kian deeper into the heart of the ruins. Here, among the stones and shadows, lay the promise of new beginnings. The world had changed, but the spirit of adventure endured, waiting to be awakened. In the stillness, the ruins echoed with the unspoken promise of discovery. And so, with hearts attuned to the whispers of the ether, Elara and Kian stepped into the unknown, ready to uncover the secrets of a forgotten world.

They didn't stay here long though a few months He came by himself An abandoned planet that nobody even cared to look for a monument to time He walked through one of the castles Marble and glass His footsteps echoing through the empty walls A portrait of the young queen hung behind her throne She stared back at him her makeup and all dressed in red like a doll Her throne empty The silver cosmic sword lay on the arms of the dark cloaked statue Legend had it when the hero would come He would grab the sword and avenge the innocent He took a seat on the throne He was a simple teenager and not an aristocratic Silence followed him Deep in though he sat In the queens throne He looked around he was always alone Human hands built this beauty and then they abandoned it He was from Earth this was a distant planet
