Hello all! Sharing a homeschool and life update from the month of March! We've begun using some of our new curriculum after finishing up previous levels. I'll share updates on what I've noticed about Beast Academy, a brand-new addition to our days, as well as talk about some new additions to our language learning routines: Spanish conversation class with friends and a new program for Mandarin. I also update you with a sneak peek at what's coming in the Kinder curriculum I'm currently writing.

Absolutely agree with you about creating habits and routines of school from an early age. Definitely is wise. Plus, what are we suppose to fill our time with if we don’t do some intentional school/structured learning time?! It’s so fun! For them and us!

Yes--I find beginning school routines at an early age to be beneficial for many reasons, and none of them are about "rushing" ahead to academics that a child isn't ready for yet. The habit building as well as good quality time during these precious early years.

I didn't even know about Purely Preschool, I'm excited to check it out and will look forward to the Kindergarten program too. You have guided me to some wonderful curriculum options like Math With Confidence and Gentle & Classical, that were exactly what we wanted, when so many other programs have fallen short to meet our needs. So I can't wait to see what all you come up with next.

I am intensely excited about this kindergarten idea! Not only do I have an upcoming kindergartener in the near future but we are HUGE Elephant and Piggy fans over here. I just bought the collection because my kids haul a huge bag of them home every single library day lol😂😂😂

Oh, see, you already have a big headstart on the Kindergarten booklist! :P Yes, at some point you have to decide that they're worth the investment with how many times you are going to read them. We can get the English ones from the library but we've been slowly building a collection of the Spanish ones.

@@SevenInAll Yes I agree! At some point you just have to start buying them for home, for us five years is just too long to transport Elephant and Piggie books every week 😂😂 I didn’t know they came in Spanish! My bilingual niece would love them!

Ahh! I’m so excited for your curriculum! I will definitely be trying it with my kindergartener this year. I would love to see some Spanish thrown into the curriculum. Idk if that’s even possible. 😂 But I want to add Spanish as our foreign language in our homeschool. I don’t speak it and I’m not sure how to start. Maybe you could even just create a Spanish curriculum for young children. Just an idea. 😂💗

:) :) :) I'm so glad that someone besides just me is excited for the Kinder curriculum. :) I actually think Homeschool Languages has an amazing program for teaching Spanish to young children, even if you don't know any yourself. I'm going to be sharing a detailed video all about it soon.

Just want to say WE LOVE the lithos kingdom of God new and Old Testament story book. So good! we are on our third round of each book. It’s our morning read aloud during breakfast and my very hyperactive and wiggly boys started them at ages 2.5 and 4 and sit through the read quite well (some days more than others of course). So I am so excited you are including this in your K curriculum. Also- the books are gorgeous - high quality , awesome graphics, and love the end of chapter-summaries and questions. I must admit I was a little upset my husband ordered them without telling me the price for both 😂but they are worth the $$$. Kiddos know only Mama can grab those for now.

So glad for a vote of confidence! We considered many different options and finally landed on those--yes, they're not cheap, but I think the quality is worthwhile. And yes, we also have some books that the boys are allowed to look at on their own, and some books that only Mama gets out.

I'd be curious to know a bit more about the Kingdom of God Bible Storybooks and what you like about them?
@SevenInAll
@SevenInAll 3 ай бұрын
People can get very heated about storybook Bibles, I know. I don't get nearly that feisty over it. For me, the purpose of a storybook Bible in general is to help young children build understanding of the grand outline of Scripture, the overall story as well as the individual characters and smaller stories. We looked at a number of options. I wanted a more detailed Bible that is longer than the more "preschool" storybook Bibles. We have the Egermeier Bible storybook, and considered that. I think Egermeier is very good for Biblical accuracy and detail, but in the end, with keeping a 5 year old in mind, it felt like the Egermeier Bible was almost too focused on details and not as much on the "big picture" of Scripture. I like that Lithos Kids blended attention to detail with big picture. From their website, these are key features of their approach: Faithful: Follows the text of Scripture without oversimplifying it or changing the meaning. Thematic: Focuses on God's covenant promises and the central theme of the Kingdom of God. Christ-Centered: Every chapter points to the longing and need for the promised King to come. In-Depth: Includes many important stories that are often skipped over. Study Guides: Each chapter ends with a summary page with questions and Bible references.

So excited about your Kindergarten program! If you were doing a DIY Chinese program, what would be the elements you would include? How do you include review of vocab? I’m finding it hard to gain real traction in foreign language.

I'm going to have a "Do a Language Lesson" with me video coming up--I'll be using resources from the Cultured Kid for Mandarin, but the routine could absolutely fit a DIY approach, and I think the video will be helpful for anyone looking to teach a language to young children. If I were totally DIYing it, first, it would depend on my goal. Which can vary based on the language. Our goals for Spanish are different and we bring Spanish into many daily routines because that's their heritage language and we want them to have good Spanish skills to connect with their extended family. At this stage, Spanish is still my biggest priority, while Mandarin is one of our community languages, and I just want them to get the idea that they CAN learn a 3rd language, that they can start recognizing mandarin words they see...for us at this stage the goal is more exploration than communication. So with that in mind: 1) Think about which words you want to start with. (household items, greetings, numbers, colors, fruits and vegetables, respectful terms for people (auntie, uncle)--all of those are very useful--I often think in terms of "market" language--what words do I need to use when I shop at market?) 2) Make flashcards (easy to DIY!) 3) Begin with one set of words--teach them and play active games. 4) Once a small set of vocabulary words are mastered, teach a simple sentence pattern to use with those words. Here are a few examples of practical, short sentence patterns: "I like____ I don't like _____ I need _____ I don't need ______ This is a ______. Where is/are _____? 5) Begin learning descriptive words--size, color,., and try adding those descriptors to nouns. Descriptive words are very helpful for non-fluent speakers. If I don't know the word for apple I can ask the fruit seller for the "small, red one"? If that makes sense. In language learning, one is often describing stuff because you forgot the actual word.

@@SevenInAll Rachel I am so thankful for this reply, I have the plan I have been looking for! So simple, when you see it written out like that. Here in South Africa children have to take a second South African language until they write their final exit exam (and they are examined on that language) and homeschoolers are often behind in this area. I am so encouraged by your videos to work really hard in this area and really give it my best shot, and have my children do as well in it as they can. This message has got me started! Off to make and laminate some flashcards!😁

Play is needed in the early yrs but nothing wrong with using a curriculum for books and other learning tools!!! I feel like In the early yrs exposure is the main part of learning!!! It’s awesome that ur son is learning to read like his older brother and I think he will want to be like his brother!!! My younger kids will ich up German slower than my older kids but I can tell they can understand when listening!!! I’d rather slow down if we don’t need a break!!! I didn’t kno that MWC and beast academy are aligned!!! I love focusing on vocabulary 1st with languages!!! We’ve not learned Cantonese even though my oldest is 16 and me and my husband have known our Singaporean friends from teenagers so my kids have grown up knowing them!!! Idk if my kids can speak any tho!!! I love that G & C nature has a few words per unit!!!
