One of the biggest problems with journalism in esports is the average idiot fan doesn't understand it or why its actually needed.

I got out of esports journalism here in NZ after almost three years. I still do the occasional radio gig but the money dried up shortly after covid - I was writing for the biggest publication in the country that had budget at the time given no other sports could be covered. It sucked. I broke some big stories (as big as it gets locally), made pennies on the dollar and left. Its just a challenge to make a living, even when youre driven by doing good work and lifting the rock on the evils of the industry.

I have followed and enjoyed your work since I was in high school, and I am now out of university with a wife and family. You've said you don't give sh*t about pats on the back given how the e-sports community has treated you, but you have pioneered and stand for integrity and quality content in this space, which members of this community (albeit a minority) greatly appreciate.

Richard has become what i fall asleep to every night with these absolute banger videos. Its such a shame tho bc esports is something I've wanted to get into for a long time whether it be from the journalist side or potentially in the operations for an org/start my own one day but damn Richard has done a hell of a job convincing me not to do that😂

Re-watching this again on the day Esports Awards is announced, and I am really glad that you achieved the three-peat. You have dedicated the past two decades of your life in trying to make this esports industry better & hold journalism to a higher standard, while getting little praise. A very thankless job that you have been serving for the people that hardly reciprocated any goodwill in return; in fact many of them turned on you & became abrasive & hostile. You have went through so many personal tragedies (the Cologne Major '14, Maria, etc. to name just a few) and still turn up to work, still try to uplift the cesspit that is Esports, & still never losing your fundamental values/ethics/principles is godlike. I'd discovered Christopher Hitchens (someone I consider as one of my role models) first in 2017, many years after he'd passed away. I discovered you in mid-2018 from BtN, and followed mostly for your CS content then. But, slowly I've found a lot of interest in your coverage of Media, politics, geopolitcs. You are someone that resembles Hitch (imo), especially in your pursuit for truth & writing for its own sake. I apologize if this post is too cringe and has become the ramblings of a madman, but I wanted to let you know that I consider myself lucky to have come across your work, and your content has helped me laugh through some of my darkest times (hopefully it will help me in my future as well); illuminated me with different perspectives, and given me introspection about fields I had no knowledge previously. So I am very thankful to you for that. In short, Richard be extremely proud of what you achieved in this time, trying to elevate this wasteland of Esports, but most importantly be proud because you never changed when you felt that you had no true friends, when you felt betrayed, when you were at your lowest moments, when the people that called you every label they can find to try to hurt your sentiments - you did not betray your own values. Congratulations again on your three-peat, chief.

Normally I'd watch all of the video before commenting but this one I came mostly because of the NiKo G2-Falcons deal, because I was the guy that was just asking about the payment stuff on Twitter (X, whatever) and if it was made and what not. There could be a world where that could've happened, but like you said, because I haven't got around to watching HLTV Confirmed myself (and I trust your word), they just confirmed that the payment wasn't made and that it was actually, factually, incorrect. In the tweet I said that I couldn't have known if they ever did it, but since it's all but confirmed I can admit I was totally in the wrong - I was the dickhead. But anyway, I just don't think I was in the wrong by asking and questioning. Thank you for your work as always, even though I didn't get around to this one in full.

JakeLucky is just a interviewer / pop media / drama coverage. Think even himself would accept that actual professional esports journalism is needed. They aren’t journalists just basic media coverage. If people see it as the same it’s sad af. Really do need serious coverage especially after the new money coming into it

I just had to deal with an article titled "Why it’s OK that so many top Pokémon players cheat" Its all horrible. Pokemon players can't even grind a few hundred hours to be competitive and understand absolutely nothing about real competition
@TheMurderBird
@TheMurderBird 8 ай бұрын
Context: Verlisfy is a known troll and unsavory individual in the community with no shortage of drama. Pokemon has been around for many years and with every game they add new content. In it's current state people either need to spend a lot of money on multiple games and systems, then 100s of hours of time grinding for the right stats to have one competitive team; or they can build the team they want through "cheating" which isn't frowned upon at all in that scene because the skill comes from battle strategy/theory crafting and "cheated teams" are identical to grinded ones. This opens the door to people without the means or time who still want to play and it's the vast majority of competitive players in VGC easily over 90%
@Verlisify
@Verlisify 8 ай бұрын
@@TheMurderBird Says everything about how much of a cretin you are to call me a troll or drama for saying "cheating is wrong" Its breaking the rules to gain hundreds of hours of advantage over your opponent... which is the definition of cheating. In this video Rich makes a note on most people spending thousands of hours to be barely above average in CS, laighable that hundred hours of grinding is too much for Pokemon
