I am so glad you saved this computer :) The Amiga 2000 is such a great nice computer. It's a beast from the 80's with so much expandebility. My Amiga 2000 is on the way back from repairs and I am so much looking forward to enjoy it again and install some expansion cards. The machine is from 1988 and all the upgrades will also be from 88 or earlier.

Great to hear you're restoring the machine with original expansions. It is so easy these days to just install a modern "power up"; much harder to build a fast machine with components from that epoch. Also, cool channel - I subscribed!

Looking jealous at this beautiful machine, in the 90s it was to expensive and i only got a PC. My dream was an A2500UX, because i wanted a unix machine. I have worked before on Unix machines with MUNIX (from the german company PCS) at internships. And now my electronical skills (soldering, measuring) make it a bad i idea to get one. Great explanations of the machine and the components.
@ForgottenComputer
@ForgottenComputer 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't have one back in the 90s either, and when I had enough money to buy my first computer, it was more practical to get a PC. I could satisfy my interest in Unix (similar to yours) that way too - Linux had already become mature enough to use as your main system, so I installed it on that PC in late 90s. "UX" Amigas remain a rare, odd, collectible thing these days.

My younger brother had one of these that he bought in 1991 but it only had the accelerator and the HD Controller. He also had in it the Commodore Amiga A2286 Bridge card. Sadly the A2500 had a battery leak from the battery connected to the Bridge Card which destroyed most of the rear of the Motherboard. I stripped as many of the chips out including all the Custom chips and threw the board in the bin. I kept the case with the sticker on the front.
@ForgottenComputer
@ForgottenComputer 6 ай бұрын
Pity about the motherboard, but if you still have the case and custom chips, and soldering skills, there's a re-make of the A2000 motherboard (amigastore.eu/821-amiga-2000-remake-motherboard-rev-185.html). You can make a project for yourself out of this, and return to the (very lively currently) world of Amiga community :)

Congratulations on the find and restore. On all my beloved A2000's I moved them to SCSI2SD's, not listening to hard drive wyne is a welcome upgrade. Okay on one I also kept a 250MB rotating media for backup. BTW I first had an A2090 controller, no-autoboot so getting onto A2091 was a good move too.

It may be worth to trying to find the zip ram to max out the ram on the CPU card, and removing the zorro ram board altogether. Its over all performance would probably increase quite a lot with that change. Though zip ram is really rare these days sadly.

@@ForgottenComputer Anytime! I have an A500 accelerator that i dont have the accompanying ram board for in my A2000, (28mhz 030) and if it were not for the accelerator having 32k of cache on it, the performance would be pretty dismal. As it stands its barely faster than the 14mhz 020 card. The other bonus is the ram on the CPU card wont count to the zorro addressable space, so it would free up for an RTG card or something.

The 68k architecture was vastly inferior to x86. Very low performance, too late coprocessor support, need for external MMU board which slowed down performance even further,and many others. A 16->32 bit version of 6809 or 6502 would have been much better,
@leighbyford635
@leighbyford635 2 жыл бұрын
Vastly inferior? I would have said they were competitive . Both cpus having strengths and weaknesses . The 68k was an extremely successful chip. I can’t imagine that was because it was vastly inferior.

@@scality4309 I agree . I would put the Atari ST above x86 based machines from that era too. E.g Xt and 286’s. I guess it depends what you want to use it for. The x86 were good for spreadsheet etc. X86 didn’t get a considerable lead until the 486 , I would say. 386 was around the same or slightly better than an Amiga 500 but not by that much and they cost $3000.
