You're right, Mary. I do know that the names of those songs are written there every time I pick up the guitar. Those were some of my happiest years ever. Also, it was a pleasure to work on the Art Caster with a couple of good friends: Juan Manuel Latapí, the artist that painted it and Daniel Zpinosa, the luthier who worked out the electronics and the pickups configurations.

Hello from California. Love your videos! My story is that about 25 years ago I was deciding on my first ever guitars to purchase. I ended up picking one black guitar (an epiphone acoustic) and one white (an epiphone les Paul custom). The reason I chose those was that just a few weeks earlier, I had found a stray cat abandoned in the snow, that I named Hobbes. He was a Norwegian Forest cat that had black and white fur in a tuxedo pattern. I loved him so much, and he was always super affectionate (I think from being saved). Even though I’ve since purchased much higher end guitars that I play more often, I will never sell those first two, as they always remind me of Hobbes. Every time I pull them out of the case to play again, I start choking up remembering Hobbes.

Only one electric for me - I built it some 35+ years ago in 7th grade. Started with a blank of African mahogany. Played in a bunch of local bands, even forgot it on the roof of my car once and saw it tumble in the mirror. It’s got plenty of flaws but somehow the wood I shaped way back then still just fits right. Wouldn’t trade her for anything at any price.

This is a great series Mary!! I love the back stories that grow with guitars after they are born! Whenever I acquire a new guitar I always try to fill in the back story. Knowing the history of the guitar is way better then simply 'owning' the guitar. What a wonderful idea for a series. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and effort you put into your videos. The effort is greatly appreciated! Be well.

Thank you ! I was hoping... SOMEONE Would point out this INCREDIBLY Well known Fact. I understand why he/Gibson call it a 335. ( Or it would have to be called a Trini Lopez/Dave Grohl, Model ) The difference ? A Non reverse firebird headstock, Diamond shaped "f" holes, & an Ebony fretboard W/Parallelogram inlays. These hung on Vintage & other store walls, Cheap ! (Relitively speaking) Compared to (( 335's )). Dave must have bought one Pre- Foo fighters. He had it early on.

The Dave Grohl model Gibson is a very slightly modified version of the Gibson Trini Lopez Standard that was available in the 1960s. The main changes are the color from Cherry to Pelham Blue, the elimination of the trapeze tailpiece on the Trini, and the elimination of the white taping border on the diamond holes. After the production of the Dave Grohl model, Gibson did a limited re-issue of the Trini Lopez Standard. I have a 1967 build Trini Lopez Standard that I purchased new at that time. It is original and in excellent condition, and is a joy to play. Look up the Trini Lopez Standard -- ever now and then one becomes available on the market.

pink and black painted Harmony guitar! He said he would teach me chords if I helped him sand off the paint; sounds like a fair trade to me. #2: My mom died when I was 14 and left me, in a bank account, $325. After the guitar sanding, I was eager to have my own guitar. My dad, being a professional musician mentioned that Gibson was a top notch instrument. Off to Music City Hollywood along with my $325. I fell in love with the Gibson ES 175 sunburst and after he made a deal to throw in the case, I went home with a 1960 brand new Gibson! #3: My dad died when I was 48. In the trunk of his car was a box of hard wood he used to make furniture and other things. The meaning of that, was that he had sold all of his wood-working tools and could not let go of that box. Down the road from where I was living at the time was the Taylor Guitar factory. My friend went to school with Bob Taylor and told me to give him a call with the idea I had. I took that box of hard wood with me and met with Bob Taylor. After sharing the dad story, I asked if he could use any of my dad's hard wood in any part of my, soon to be, new guitar. The head-stock piece and the truss-rod cover are now part of my Dad.

Most of my guitars are either parts built or modified by me... I think the minimum is my Ibanez Jet King I, I put better tuners on it, and replaced all the controls (except the coil split switches) to make it more balanced for a guitar that can have both humbucker and single coils (300k volume pot, and this custom tone that allows for the normal capacitor for high cut, or pull up the knob to an inductor to cut the mids (yes, it can sound like a wah wah if I roll it on and off fast enough.) I did it this way because I wasn’t sure if the pickups were the issue (just sounded kind of “eh” in both modes) or the electronics... I was right and saved myself from having to buy new pickups.

Sweet guitar. So I've only been playing guitar for 3 years or so. It's a beautiful feeling knowing I keep rhythm and be at 85 percent vocally. When I just jam out playing lead I'm starting to play with Beethoven pieces. Drive and ambition keep me going. Never let the world take music from you.

One last thing... building a guitar- even from a kit takes a lot of work and special tools. It also takes a lot of time. IMHO it's absolutely worth it! If you have the patience to go through all of the steps, you can customize it exactly to fit what you're about from the hand carve on the lower bowt, to the arm carve up top. Maybe that's another whole set of videos for you to get into. I'm doing my 8th build with the other guitarist in my band right now. I have sold off all but 2, for about what I put into them!!

I have two guitars that go with me everywhere I go. One is a Black Oscar Schmidt OE40 Hollow Body and the other is a Johnson Swamp Stomper Resonator. Since I play mostly acoustic blues these work very well for me. I couldn't figure out how to place pictures of them though. They have remarkable sound even though I spent about 200 USD for each.

Being a retired machinist and metal fabricator I have two guitar stories to share. Back in the early 1980's I was just learning to play guitar and working the overnight shift in a machine shop had the good fortune to be friends with two advanced guitar players, one of who hung out with a garage band in Roseland, Illinois who later became STYKS. S older fellow who was a sheet metal fabricator was learning guitar too. So we would take our lunch breaks in an isolated area of our shop and learn more from these seasoned players. Being inventive, we decided to make an acoustic guitar from sheet aluminum. I traced out a pattern from my C. F. Martin copy Fannin guitar and during breaks and lunch we worked on the body. I then had the woodshop fellows provide me with some maple flooring to carve out a neck and bridge. I made the frets out of strips of stainless steel and pressed them into the slots in the fretboard that I carefully layed out using my Tannin for dimensions. I then added 6-32 flat head Allen screws as neck position markers and purchased tuners from the local guitar store. The neck was bolted on to the body block welded into the body. After installing strings the "Bucket Guitar" as I christened it actually played pretty good. I named it bucket guitar because when you set it down, it sounded like a bucket! When the sheet metal fellow retired we have him the aluminum guitar to take with him. Since it had no truss rod, the neck did warp a bit with a high action. The second guitar was similar, but based on an electric 335 style body we made using a broken solid body guitar neck my sister-in-law got from a local band who broke it on stage. The body was a hollow body with aluminum construction too, welding round pins I machined to support the bridge and tremolo tailpiece. I have several photos of that one, but I sold it years ago.

03:55. I worked at Sydney Airport when U2 toured. One guy got Bono's autograph which was signed in his real name & another got Edge's which was in his real name. I am NOT sure if Edge would have 2 signatures, one for Edge and one for his own name (probably does). As we were helping the entourage find their plane, maybe my former workmates got a more personal autograph?

I have a surf green mustang and I never thought I’d have settled on that color combo but mist mint green guards aren’t truly mint green they just mimic the black layer under the first white layer.
