LOVE this video. I own a 2007 first run Pelham and I used to own a 2014 Gold. Few things that may have some value to people: 1) There weren't actually 200/100 PB vs Ebony in the first run. They made 300, but they made them to order depending on who wanted what color, so no-one actually knows how many of each there are. Best guesses are around 200/100 though, but some people I speak to say less of the Ebony. 2) The blue on the first run is VERY different. The second run is a really deep blue, whereas the first run is almost silver, very very pale, silver like blue. You can see this on Grohls one. 3) The second run also had "notchgate" which was an issue with Gibsons CNC machine for the second run. What it meant was that the diamond F holes had a notch at the corner on the long edge where the circular CNC piece wasn't coded properly. It's not an issue at all, but a cool little bit of history. 4) That finish checking by the nut is on every single one I've seen. Most of them also have some finish checking coming out the corners of the f-holes as well. Not an issue! That stand rash isn't stand rash - it's actually from the case. My blue has it too. The red Gibson plush cases bleed onto the finish. Again, I've seen it on a lot. The gold is beautiful!

I love Gibson dont get me wrong and i own a few of them but for god sakes Gibson, Clean up the cuts and joints on your guitars. I expected these to look a LOT cleaner on the inside for the price. I have seen 300 dollar Chinese guitars with cleaner cuts than this!

During the time period that this guitar was made, Gibson was using temp services to hire their factory workers which is the reason why they had such bad qc for so long. Which that blows my mind personally. If you're charging $5K for a product I'd at least expect a skilled tradesman, or at least someone who cares about the integrity of their work to be making the product.. not some temp to hire person that plans on only working there for 6 months & gives zero shits about any of it... In 2016 they were going thru 150+ workers a month.

Austin, with this ES guitar having the output jack located on the guitar’s top you really should use a right angle (90 Degree) instrument cable. One mis-step on the cable or even just over time the strain will at the very least check the finish around the connector or at worse crack the top. Please don’t ask me how I know this………

I’ve always liked the Triny Lopez models. The Triny custom was a cool guitar too. I think it was actually a double cut Barney Kessel with the diamond inlays and sound holes but unusual looking guitars.

Just to add - the 2014 run were made in the Memphis plant as USA guitars whereas the 2007 run were Custom Shop (back when Memphis had one). However, the prices don't seem to differ much between runs. Personally, I am just glad that I got my 2007 Pelham Blue one back when the prices were just a bit silly instead of bloody insane as they are now.

Every one of the Lopez and Grohl models I have been able to play at music stores are AMAZING. They have such a great rock tone unplugged, as well. Perfect frequency spectrum.

I have fixed a fret ding with solder and it worked great! Just a little solder in the crack, level it against the frets next to it, crown it, and polish it. Feels like new.

I just saw Foo Fighters in Cincinnati this past Wednesday. Honestly, I didn’t notice him make a guitar change through most of the set. The only change I noticed was towards the end of the set when he played his gold guitar. Just an observation.

I'm glad to hear that it looks better in person because my thought of this color had been that it looks like a gold Buick in the 90's. But I have to say that Trini Lopez came up with a cool guitar design back in the day and Dave Grohl did good by honoring this with his signature guitar.

I can’t believe it!!! I have never heard of, let alone seen one, a DG335. But last night I was watching a program on AXS music TV and they were doing a Top ten list of something for 1970. Well , one of the blues artists was actually holding this guitar. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. A Firebird headstock and ES style body. And here you are showing one,lol !!!! ☮️❤️☮️. I just saw it again,lol!! Actually, Country Music Legend Charlie Pride is the guy playing it, on A Year in Music 1970.

Does your Father also play guitar? Either way it is an amazing journey learning to play the guitar. I took up playing back in 1974 and can’t imagine my life without the guitar. Just keep at it and realize nobody can learn all there is to playing the guitar. Keep at it and try and make the world a better place one note at a time.

You mentioned about the rhythm pickup being much louder than the bridge. I’ve found that it is pretty typical with my humbucker equipped Gibson guitars I need to lower that neck pickup a lot. I’ve also had good luck with lowering the pole piece screws for strings “E”, “A” and “D”. Resist the urge to raise the bridge pickup too much. Cool guitar, not surprised they are valued so high, Dave Grohl is about as talented as they come. Great score and thank you for sharing.

You can probably gently polish that fret nick out so that the string doesn't get caught on it. Just smooth out the ridges of the nick w/o lowering the height of the fret.

Not sure if it was you or your editor who drew attention to the guitar Dave used on Sesame Street, but if you were curious that's a Shinichi Ubukata signature (japan exclusive cuz of course it was) that was gifted to Dave. It's a cool 355. Basically the love child of a Dave Grohl, Joe Bonamassa, and BB King. Epiphone recently did a run of them (again, japan exclusive). Edit: It is also the one that is smashed up in the Shame Shame video so uhhhhhh... one less in the world I guess lol

If you like this, you should review a Brian May. I own a Jubilee Gold Burns model which pre dates the Brian May Signature. The difference is gold hardware where the Brian May signatures now have chrome hardware. They are all semi hollow bodies, They all have tri sonic pickups which are a little more like p90s than single coils. The center pups are reverse wired so when you have two or more on they become humbucking. Graphite nut, Grover rotomatics are standard.

I had an indent on a lower fret on my guitar a while back. I masked off the fretboard and gave the affected part of the fret a sanding with very fine sandpaper. The ‘ping’ pretty much disappeared. It didn’t cause any buzzing on the next fret either. Maybe worth a try before redressing all the frets?

Given that ding is on the first fret and not too deep I would expect you could gently smooth it out without doing an entire fret leveling. It would cause the first fret to be ever so slightly lower than the rest but it would probably be unnoticed for the most part.

I don’t know what to think about the modern Gibsons, I’ve a custom ordered 1986 LP Custom that I bought used and every part of that guitar is constructed perfectly. My advise, buy an older used Gibson.

Price is absolutely bonkers. Nothing about that guitar is worth that much money. All basic features (mostly the same they’ve been doing for decades), just has Daves name and Gibson’s insane pricing strategy,

I've got an Epiphone Sheraton Pro II and yeah I know it's nothing like this guitar but when you add in a load of pedals in terms of bangs for bucks and old fashions fun I can't really see much of a difference :) Fair play if people have this kind of money, but just because most people don't doesn't mean you can't get pretty close whuch is great.

I had a cut on the fret on my Flying V on the 12th fret, but I played it so much the strings filed it away lol

...and then the playing demo' tones are fantastic especially dirty' just up the height of the bridge PU a tad such a shame about the first fret ding but well worth a small fix project. Love to see an ebony and great job with the finger board conditioning.

I got a DG made by Tagima, couldnt warrant the price of the real thing. Its a great playing guitar for the price. With a few mods it has fast become of of my favorites to play.

I have never understood why Gibson would put the Jack Outlet on the front of any guitar let alone a really nice one like that. It should be on the side like any normal guitar.. they do that on the SG's also I don't understand that... are there people that Prefer that?

With the SG guitars I believe that are too thin for a normal output jack plate. I’m not 100% sure but I believe the ES guitars have the output jack on the top for ease of assembly as well as a structural issue. The jack plate and mounting hole/opening on the lower side of the guitar might weaken the area as the top, bottom and sides are somewhat stressed in those areas.

That's just how they always made them.. From day 1 on. 🤷♂️ You know darn well if they changed that, the "purist nazis" would probably be out in full force, complaining if it was changed to a side jack. However I agree.. I really wish all ES style guitars had side jacks. At least my Les Paul Signature does, even though it's a high impedance output.

Beautiful guitar, I love Gibson’s . I have a LP special that had Burstbucker 2 and 3s in it, never liked the sound so I swapped them out for some Seymour Duncan’s. I don’t like them in the DG 335 either, they sound thin to my ear.

Writing this before watching… I’ve been waiting for you to do this for a long time! Love this guitar (perfer blue, but) my dream! These DGs made me vant all of my Gibbys to have FB headstock 😅 (If I remember right his use different colors for different tunings)

You are right about pricing of the second run. Gold was about $4k and blue was $8k with street price about $3500 for the gold and $7000 for the blue. I have a gold that I bought new.

I wonder if Gibson ever thought of doing a Bandit Firebird as a kind of tribute to the movie. Black and Gold with the 400 inlays, that is the engine size of the Bandit T/A 400ci. I'm sure there is a market out there for it

I hate the silkscreen on the headstock. If they upgraded it to inlaid I feel it would look that much better and make it a little different for his model. My favorite guitar I own is my ebony 335 but a Trini has been on my wish list forever. I loved the first few Foo Fighters albums but I can't really say much about anything since, so I was never going to plunk down for the cost of a DG 335. Nice review though Trogs.

I think Gibson was a bit all over the place making the second run aswell as the Trini model reissues. I've seen Trini reissues with the soundhole binding but mine hasn't. I love it none the less. It's probably the only higher end ES guitar I'm gonna keep once I can get myself to the point where I seriously thin out the herd.

As far as I know, Dave actually retired the black ones from live use once they did the run of the gold ones. He's said, he has (or had) 6 of each color.
