Hey whats up everybody, long time no see! I am back with another business documentary. I think this is my 10th video like this? Anyways, in this video I cover Epic Games. Epic games started out as a small computer consultation business (Potomac Computer Systems) that transitioned into a small video game development company, and eventually became a multi-billion dollar enterprise that is a titan of the video game industry.
This video is largely a documentary about Tim Sweeney and his path towards becoming a billionaire through the programming of Unreal Engine. I really enjoyed making this documentary and it felt good to be back making videos. Also, I liked making this one specifically because Tim Sweeney's path to success had a couple years of failure and was more of a slow growth for nearly a decade before his company exploded.
Anyways, if you want to support me or my game where I use unreal engine, please checkout my other channel in the link down below

It's a bit weird that you skipped the early 2000s almost entirely. Not a single word about Unreal Tournament 2003/2004, for example, or other major early UE2 games.

I became a wholehearted Unreal Engine advocate back in 2010(?) when it became open source. Well, no, maybe not open source, (I'm not sure what term I'm looking for,) but back when it became free to download for people to do whatever with. Tim Sweeney is definitely one epic dude.

Also Epic Games made Unreal Engine free unless you hit $1million revenue and if you put your game on Epic Games store, that royalty fees is 0 and unreal Engine is completely free.

Are they ever going to make another Unreal game? I heard the story about the group of dedicated modders who were working on an new Unreal Tournament under Epic's supervision, until Epic decided to yank the rug from underneath them and switched focus to Fortnite instead. I'd like to have a singleplayer Unreal again.

The difference between EPIC and all the other companies is that EPIC is still a Hands-On Development and Creator Company. The Owner is also a programmer and game developer, plus Engine Dev. Where as at EA/Ubisoft/Sony/Microsoft they are Umbrella Corporations that buy tech or outsorce it.

Awesome video, I wasn’t expecting such good commentary on a video with a *relatively* low amount of views. No offense of course, I just enjoyed the content and you seem to be punching above your weight here which is a great thing. I will say, I know you were aiming at a Fortnite history so you had to be brief on Unreal, but you should make a longer format video on the history of unreal as a whole. I was looking for something like that and noticed a serious lack of content on Unreal’s absolutely revolutionary history. It’d take some research but I want to know their effect on the gaming industry as a whole, from ZZT to Fortnite. Before and after type thing. Just a thought, there’s a lot to be said about all that and I can’t find a damn thing on it.

@@enricofermi3471 PUBG's version of the Unreal Engine seems too unoptimized. You can really feel it was made by an indie studio due to how unpolished everything feels. That was during in beta until its initial release. Dunno if they did anything to improve the look and feel of the game post-release.

You can just change / add new objects without changing / breaking initial code. You could add a new weapon by just adding one more object in weapon class rather than editing entire game's weapon system.

4:37 You left out the major point about the game Unreal and the first version of the Unreal Engine, Epic Mega Games licenced the Quake engine from id software which was the base for the first version of Unreal, Just like Valve did with Half life and the GoldSource engine, They also licened the IdTech engine for the base of their engine. Same what Activision did for Call of Duty and many others.

I somehow had never heard the name "Epic games" before the fortnite boom, so them being the creators of all of this major gaming history that I had known about for a long time was an incredible surprise Hell, the way I found out about the name was because they gave out so many free games on a regular basis on the Epic store

Huh, didn't know that the original Mass Effect was built using Unreal Engine 3. I could have sworn it was built using RenderWare due to how clunky it was, seemingly converted from an isometric game to a third person shooter. It was a chore for me to play the first game, but seems that some people like it more than 2 and 3. As for me, 2 was a massive improvement, but 3 was a bit step back due to how messy and clippy your Normandy has become due to clutter.

As a person who never heard how they were supposed to be pronounced, I would often call them "I.D." software because of their chosen name, as I always had to carry it to school then when I'm working. I'd still call them I.D. because calling them EED sounds weird because I have nothing to associate it with.

More like the company that forgot a ton of it's IP's and what got it where it is today. You skipped so much before UNREAL where the hell is jazz jackrabbit? And the barrage of other DOS games epic published. They were known for a crap ton before Unreal, and the company has totally forgotten about it's past. Hell they don't even care about Unreal now, the freaking game their engine is named after. Why don't you make the mention that UNREAL 1 \ UT\UT2004 (2003 is lost to Disc) is on GOG and Steam but not Epic's own Store. Which is just insane when you think about it.

Because games made with unreal engine are using the engine as a solid foundation to build their game. Apple and Google "just" offer a marketplace. Like Steam. And no one said they can't take a cut, companies are complaining because they take too much.
@mov4736
@mov4736 2 жыл бұрын
Just to add to Opiniononion's comment. Epic takes 5% after the first million dollars of revenue. Meaning: If your game makes 1.1 million dollars, they take 5% of 100,000 => 100,000 * 0.05 = 5000$ We are talking about a full fledged engine with a shitton of features that you will probably struggle to create your game (in the same quality) without it. compare that with the percentage apple/google take despite offering nothing as a base. Just the store front.
