In June 2022, I was invited to speak on Eastern Orthodox Christianity at Zootown Church in Missoula, Montana. I talked with with my bishop, and he agreed that it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up. It was a wonderful visit. I met some very devout and kind hearted believers, and I made some new friends. The theme of my message was how the ancient Christian Church understands the story of our salvation.

I've come to know Scott in the same way he came to know you, Father - through a cold contact on the internet. I've certainly found a kindred spirit in one who seeks earnestly. He was one of the first I informed that I have left Protestantism and bacame a catechumen 2 weeks ago. Thank you for your wisdom, Fr. Jarmus.

What an incredible sermon, especially in the way it's so geared for a protestant audience. Amazing work, I hope they have/had you back for another!

When I was a Protestant, I had no idea about church history, and neither did anyone I knew (including pastors and church leaders!). I think it’s less ignoring and more that Protestantism has drifted so far away from its roots and become so watered down that people literally don’t know!

Not only did fr. Andrew give an orthodox sermon in an evangelical church, he did it in the evangelical style (not content) as well. Very impressive!

Haha. I thought the same thing - as if he was a former evangelical who converted to Orthodoxy… or someone who to the time and prepared his message by understanding his audience … either way, Father Andrew was ‘all things to all men’ here. Trust you are well. Lovingly, Cuthbert

Fr you mentioned that in orthodox theology, heaven and hell are actually the same place. How will we be joyous in heaven if we witness our loved ones and those we care about or even people generally, experiencing a hell? Will our memories of our relationships here on earth be wiped so we have no longer have this knowledge? I guess this is a deep mystery but have any of the church fathers spoken of this?

This, I'm afraid, is not clear to us now. Most of what we know now about life in the Age to come is very limited and largely comes to us through symbols rather than direct teaching. This is to be expected since we don't have a proper frame of reference to discuss life at that time (we are limited by our experiences of life in this age). I know of several Orthodox saints, though, who pray for the salvation of all people, stating that the thought of even one person in hell is unbearable.

Could you explain their “Eucharistic service” how do they have a valid communion? Aren’t Catholics forbidden from participating in the Orthodox communion? I’m confused by this Protestant church providing the Eucharist with the prayer you created for this. could you clarify please
@fr.ajarmus
@fr.ajarmus 4 күн бұрын
I didn't take part in their communion service. My participation was limited to delivering this message. That said, I think that fact that they are doing communion indicates that they're heading in the right direction.

@@fr.ajarmus Hi. Thank you for your reply. What I was referring to was an interview he gave where he said you and your bishop had given them a liturgy basically that included communion and specific prayers you and or the bishop created. I am not being accusative I’m genuinely curious. Is their communion valid or are they just pretending to have Christs body? He’s very upset with Catholics not giving Christs body to other Christian’s. But Catholics and Orthodox used to believe that his body was only present if the consecration was done in a particular way. Was he given an apostolic consecration prayer for their communion to be valid or is it still just bread and wine after he’s done praying?
@fr.ajarmus
@fr.ajarmus Күн бұрын
That was something I did with them, not my bishop. And it really wasn't a liturgy, per se. They had already been celebrating communion by the time that Pastor Scott reached out to me. He asked about what a proper framework for their eucharistic prayers would look like. I gave him a series of scriptural quotes and references framed in the pattern of the ancient Eucharistic prayers. The point of this was not to "validate" their communion, but to bring their practice closer to the liturgical forms and patterns of the apostolic Tradition. The folks at ZooTown are on a journey, and I pray that journey eventually brings them into the Eastern Orthodox Church. But it's a slow and measured one, as it needs to be with so many people involved. God's will be done.

@@fr.ajarmus Thank you again. I think too many people pick extremes instead of realizing God allows Protestantism as a gateway for the spiritually young to get their milk on the way to the meat. I think their journey is valid. It is concerning if he can’t understand the concept of a valid Eucharist but I respect your judgement and his ability to be mentored. Thank you for addressing the question. I think you guys are participating in something powerful. As a Roman Catholic I respect the process you are shepherding. May His Will be done

As St John Paul II said, the Church, the body, has two lungs, the East and West. Orthodox and Latin. As a Christian of the Latin Rite, Protestants need to come back into the fold. Christ prayed for unity in the Garden of Gethsemane.
