Long Haul by Simple Flying

2 жыл бұрын

The Antonov An-225 is the heaviest and longest operational aircraft today. Built during the 1980s, this behemoth was intended to primarily serve the USSR space program, but has gone on to a niche role carrying the heaviest of payloads.
At over 30 years old, it has just finished a recent refurbishment, and we are likely to see it carrying out special missions for more than another decade. But… What’s the story behind this massive plane? And what does its future hold?

The Ukrainians are already planning on finishing the second hull after the war which currently stands at 50-60% completion, possibly re-engined.
@rbleisem

@@steven95N Depending on how much they can salvage from her wrecked hull, the second one should be finished relative fast. They have most of the wings, everything aft of the wings and the nose cone. Still a shame after 20 years flying extreme cargo around the world. Here is hoping they can then get both birds finished, one via salvage of parts of the wrecked one & one via repayment, so they can fix her wrecked and dismantled hull.

When I arrived in Santiago de Chile (SCL) from Rapa Nui (IPC) in November 2016, our plane was moved to the apron southeast of Terminal 1 since we arrived earlier than scheduled and no available gate. As we disembarked the plane, some of the passengers including me were stunned to see An-225 parked on taxiway near Runway 35R. The An-225 was so huge and a sight to behold! We ignored the ground staff who tried to direct us to the buses while we took photos of the plane. Some of the airport employees also stopped by to take photos. This has been a very majestic experience for me to see the aviation equivalent of unicorn!

I saw it at Farnborough in 1990. It was extraordinary. The undercarriage remained down for the duration of the display - and what an undercarriage! It flew very low overhead, and I had never seen so many wheels on a plane. It is truly and amazing machine, and I feel privileged to have seen it fly from such a close vantage point.

Like Tyrese would say in a movie about a massive plane: "That's not a plane, that's a f***** planet!" I think we all agree that this would be at top of the bucket list of many (if not all) plane spotters and aviation enthusiasts. If in Venezuela we were shocked at seeing the A380 from HiFly came and landed at SVMI in all her massive glory, I can't imagine how would anybody would feel about the An-225. It's truly impressive!

I’ve seen a couple of 124s, but Singapore Changi isn’t big enough I don’t think to handle the bigger brother. I wish she and I will rendezvous one day, it’s such a sight to watch it in action. Just a suggestion Long Haul team, how about covering high profile aviation disasters or corporate mishaps? I’m really interested to learn more about the 787s recent production difficulties and moving production to SC seems to be a recipe for trouble given it’s track record. Other topics that can potentially be covered include, the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 turbine/compressor blade fiasco, DC-10 Cargo door of the 70s, 787 battery fires, maybe some other major ones that went unnoticed? I’d love to have some content surrounding that kind of genre!

I remember being told (many years ago), during a particularly turbulent flight, that one of the key safety design components of passenger airplanes is that the fuselage (the dead weight) sits *on top of* the wing structure (which provides the lift), rather than hanging beneath it. If so, as the An-225 isn't designed the same way, and with it's immense weight (especially fully loaded), that seems like it might be an issue. Is it?

She's a real beauty, there's been nothing like her in aviation history and there never will be either so we really need to get one flying again. I'm hoping that Antonov can complete the one that hasn't been destroyed by the Russians, in my opinion that was done deliberately as it's a World famous symbol of the Ukrainian people...... that was why the Russian military targeted her. Why else would they target an innocent aircraf???

OMG, here we go. And this is why I don't subscribe. You say "aircraft" but you should be saying "airplane". Why? 'Cause you're wrong. So wrong. The largest, and longest "aircraft" is the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin LZ129 Hindenburg at 803 ft 7 in. Although the An-225 is heavier. Yes I know Hindenburg is a "lighter than air" airship, but it's still and "aircraft". You guys have to watch your nomenclature and do your research better.
