Hello everyone, and welcome back to another episode of Bionicle Lore Explained! In today’s episode we’ll be covering one of my all-time favorite Bionicle Factions: the Dark Hunters! First introduced in 2004, the Dark Hunters played a major role throughout most of the Bionicle Story. In this video, we’ll examine said story, covering everything from their founding, to conflicts with the Toa, and everything else you need to know about the Dark Hunters. I always found the Dark Hunters to be more a more interesting evil organization than the Brotherhood. They’re made up of a lot more varied species and have different personalities and motivations unlike the Makuta who other than outliers like Krika were very similar characters.

Stories about good and evil have a naturally strong foundation but also start with the obvious weakness of being boring. If you look back at all the great stories about good and evil from the past, they all have a way of overcoming this weakness. In the lotr the heroes have to face down their inner darkness and the difficulty of doing the right thing, and what few glimpses we have of the enemy shows that they are sympathetic as well. In bionicle the dark hunters are part of that solution. Bringing a force that is amoral rather than immoral like the makuta. The dark hunters arent deliberately evil so much as they are ruthless and uncaring, although this turns the shadowed one into a more and more makuta like figure as he goes from wanting money to desiring power. They’re the shades of grey that complete the story between the toa’s light and the makuta s darkness
