The Sega Dreamcast was a love letter to all sega fans. A console that was meant to give rebirth to the brand only had a short life span before its send off. On this video we will be looking at the final years of Sega as a console maker. The Hype surrounding the launch, the games, and the short lived experience of Sega Being back on top for brief moment.

From a consumer point of view, the Dreamcast was a hit, and I would argue that it remains so to this day. What hurt Sega most of all was the bad blood it had created with publishers, most notably EA, who refused to develop on it after the experience with Saturn. Combine this with the massive hype and solid product that was the PS2, and well - we all know how that turned out. Sega DID go all out, and gave us perhaps the best console in their history. There’s two things that could have turned the tide a bit here in the US, IMHO. First, if arcades hadn’t already been on their decline, there might have been more NAOMI development, and those games would have easily translated to the Dreamcast. Second, if more developers/publishers had jumped on board, some of the innovative genres that flourished on the PS2 could have found a home on Dreamcast, especially with the advantage the VMU and its display to provide information to the user. Sadly, none of that happened, and while it fizzled out here in the US, I firmly believe that Japan got the best of what the Dreamcast had to offer, since several developers/publishers kept making games for it until about 2005/2006.

Great video! I'll say this...SEGA WENT OUT WITH A BANG!! Had a buddy put his neogeo in the closet and bought a Dreamcast since all the best Neogeo games were ported pretty much perfect to the DC. I don't own one anymore but I still own my old discs for it. Garou, KoF and Dynamite Cop. Great memories.

I have a dreamcast but emulation is so good for it. I do need to hook my DC up but I'm afraid I'll start spending too much money on discs I don't need lol. Thanks for watching man I'm glad you enjoyed the video it was alot of work

Great Video. The Dreamcast was truly a game changer for me. I have never been so excited as when i bought my DC way back then, and i loved every minute of it, and still do. The sports games, arcade ports, and games like Shenmue and D2 defined everything i wanted from the industry. Still have my original DC console from 1999, and still play it regularly. Something about that time in gaming is better than modern gen. BTW great perspective on NFL 2k and Flag to Flag, you said it Perfectly.

The Dreamcast was an amazing experience, and it really genuinely felt like you have the arcade experience without any compromises at all, which was actually true for some games built on the Naomi arcade boards I believe. The saturn brough the arcades home, but while they were very good, almost all of them had some compromises in visuals and performance. The Dreamcast's controller was the only thing that kept the Saturn ahead of it for me, I didn't love the controller. I was quite sad when the DC died, and buddy and I were DEEEEEEEP into Phantasy Star Online when we heard Sega had end of lifed the console. I still remember where I was when I was told...

@@theretrobro I played Socom online for both the PS2 and the PSP, I really loved it, especially on the PSP since the game came with a headset, so everyone in the game always had a headset to chat with while playing. This was back in the day when people would still have unsecured wifi networks LOL! so if I wasn't at home, I would drive around until I found a place to park that had a wifi connection and I would play Socom in my car online if I had free time. hahaha

I'm guessing I'm just a few years older than you (?) but my perspective on the Dreamcast (at that time) was one of harsh condemnation: I saw Sega as a company that had lost its way, and had lost any sense of mandate, distinctive house style, or target demographic. I wasn't the only one: the executives at _Electronic Arts_ decided they would neither provide a needle nor a thread of support to the console from day one -and I would have made the same decision in their shoes. I could make a video talking reflecting on this stuff, but my regular audience would probably hate me for it: in general, I was one of the many people who regarded the Dreamcast as "doomed" (and "for losers") from its launch through to its failure. A note on competition: this was also the period in which the P.C. itself was replacing consoles as never before (something already evident during the Saturn-vs-N64 era). At that time, unlike the 16 bit era, consoles didn't just need to be better than other consoles: they needed to justify why anyone would need a console at all.

Possibly I was 15 when the dreamcast was launched so yeah for me it was from the perception of a niave fan. I suppose if everyone felt the way I did it wouldn't have flopped so hard. I remember the ea thing and thankfully I think the sega sports titles were better at the time (my opinion) I still never went back to madden after nfl 2k lost the license.

A note on the EA scenario, EA wanted to be the exclusive maker of sports games for the Dreamcast, the problem was Bernie Stolar had just secured Visual Concepts for the task of creating sports franchises (which they did to great effect) on the DC and beyond. I can understand EA's pov, as they were a key partner to Sega during the Genesis era and even provided games for the Saturn and probably felt snubbed, but it would take a while for me to forgive them for this move and later securing the NFL and NFL players license for 10 years, effectively crippling any other developer from making an officially licensed NFL game for consoles. Before then the Madden and NFL 2K games were pushing each other to greater quality heights and the players were the beneficiaries. All EA games were banned in my house for at least a decade after.

I remember buying one of these when I was deployed in Iraq! I used to put it in the day room in on a huge TV so that we can all play Saul Caliber! Later on I needed money because my wife and I where expecting a child, so I sold it to a friend of mine for $200.00. He gave me $100.00 up front and said that that he will give me the rest when we get back to Germany. The sad thing was that he ended up getting killed on a convoy on our last mission. That messed me all up! His Sgt. asked me if I wanted the DC back, I said no! Let his kid have it back home. I’m sure he loved it and helped him remember his dad. After that tragic event I could never replace the System so I never purchased another one. It was just triggering to me to remember that tragic day! Even now, as I watch your video it brought me back to those days. Thankfully, I am able to handle it better now, and enjoy playing these games on my PC. Thanks a lot for this video. It was really educational and well done! That was my event with the Dream Cast. I really enjoyed your video! Thanks!

When were you deployed? I was deployed to the gulf on a carrier in 2004. Ironically I had my dreamcast set up in the berthing (where we slept) the guys in My division thought it was kidna cool having on cause at that time everyone was all about the ps2 and psp. Sorry to hear about your buddy man. Shit sucks I lost a friend on deployment as well. Best thing we can do is honor them every chance we get.

Just look at some of the games that made it out for the PS2, GC and Xbox in the following years. -The DC hosted the game Head Hunter(2001) and of course Shenmue (1999), it isn't a stretch to think that Grand Theft Auto 3 (also 2001) could have made an appearance (supposedly the prototype was in development for the Dreamcast). -Outrun 2 came out in 2003 and had ports on the Xbox(arcade hardware was Xbox based) and ports of Outrun 2006 coast to coast for Xbox, PC, PS2, and the PSP. I think the DC would have hosted a decent port. -Metropolis Street Racer was the predecessor to Project Gotham Racing on the Xbox, it's likely the series would have continued on the DC. -Sonic Heroes, Billy Hatcher, Jet Set Radio Future, Super Monkey Ball are all candidates to have seen a DC release...

SEGA kind of is back though: Yakuza serie! and publisher for Persona serie, total war RTS serie (medieval, shogun, rome, empire, warhammer etc) and even causal games like Two point hospital/campus. And Sonic? 300-400 million at the box office for both movies so far. I mean, SEGA literally have Yakuza 8 in development, and a prequel to Yakuza 8 AND a 1800 Yakuza spin-off out next year. Even Valkyria Chronicles was one of my favorite game of the ps3 generation AND it had skies of arcadia characters cameo in it. SEGA reported a profit for 250 million dollars this year, SEGA isnt going anywhere! The reason the dreamcast failed was obvious- people like me realized that the Saturn had bombed and we knew a Playstation 2 was around the corner that was also backward compatible (which was insane back then to know, nintendo didnt offer it with their consoles) AND ps2 would come with a DVD player which was perfect for your room - now you could game AND watch movies in your own room. Dreamcast was a great console but when you compare it to the ps2 it made no sense to 95% of us gamers out there.

Yes as a software publisher and developer they are deft back. This is more of a retrospective as what it was like 20 plus years ago when the console was released and how sega exited the Market there was alot of uncertainty
