Errors: 4:00 I misspoke. Saturn release was pushed up to May 1995. Not 1994.

Also, the Saturn was supposed to be released by September 2 "Saturnday", not June as mentioned.

You hit the nail on the head but if we learned anything from the PS3 (spiritually a failed console) price don't mean you will fail PS3- $699.99- $799.99 (side note) Hard to program for, too expensive, fire 🔥🥵 wall disaster resulting in billions of dollars lost, no clear direction where the console was going at least for the first 3 years, etc . XBox 360- $399.99- perfect launch, great games, perfect pricing. Yet the PS3 sold 94 million to XBOX 360 at 88 million. Sega of Japan had absolutely no success with any of it's consoles except for the Saturn. The Genesis was in large part successful thanks to Tom Kalinske. So I think if Tom Kalinske has fought them like he did with the Genesis we could have a different future right now. Sega of Japan thought he was too tough which was true, he fights to win. Aldo respect to this video but Sonic Extreme was dead in the water 🌊💦 by 1995, in my opinion that game should have been completed by the end of 1995 because the console launch was originally in September of 1995. But there was one no one talks about, and that is Sonic Adventure first screen shots was in Sega and electronic magazines in 1995 but like a real bone head Sega of Japan rejected the US made game because Japanese were more superior. Sonic Adventure was to be 70% complete but was not talked about anymore until 1999 when it was released for Dreamcast. This could have been ready for a 1996 release but the Saturn had other problems. Not being available at thousands of retailers hurt sales in the US meaning only a handful of stores had them. My cousins best friend said he got his Saturn when he went to a field trip to St Louis six flags, and ask the teacher could he buy one. Because In my town here in Evansville Indiana, Only one place had Sega Saturn console and that was K.B. toy works. They couldn't keep the darn thing in stock so he got his on a school field trip 🤣 funny right..... So Sega was in a real pickle 🥒, Sonic Adventure would have Saved the Saturn but only Tim Kalinske could broker a deal to get Sega in the retail stores, Berney Stolar (RIP) 🙏 might have not made that comment if this game had released.

Kaybee toys refused to sell Saturn games. Not EBGames. I worked for EBGames, which would have been called Electronics Boutique in 95, and we certainly sold Saturn games.

I honestly think that in the USA and Europe it was hopeless: Sega in this period didn't understand how increasing software development costs changed the industry for everyone -producers and consumers alike. If they had ZERO region locking, Saturn could have been a niche product in Europe and America, with customers there able to play Japanese discs on their system; instead, region locking meant more development costs for niche products to reach smaller and smaller niche markets. 8 bit (2D) games didn't have such high costs for production or adaptation; the era the Saturn had to compete in was different, and Sega didn't understand that -so they succeeded in Japan and failed everywhere else.

You may be right about that. There was alot sega didn't seem to understand beyond cliche 90s marketing.... and this is coming from a hardcore sega fan.

I like Nights but it wasn't a system seller. It feels more like a side game. Sonic should have been a major focus. Imagine having a Saturn packed in with both a 3D Sonic game AND a collection of the Genesis games on a disc like Sonic Jam? That'd show both the old and new to show how far Saturn surpassed Genesis. Nights is good, but it's too short. The actual pack in games with the system that were Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, and Virtua Cop are all fantastic games. But they aren't as well known as Sonic. They do however go well with different peripherals. So have them included with those peripherals instead. Sort of like how Street Fighter II Champion Edition came with the 6 button Sega Genesis controller at the time. Rather than split up different developers on different Sonic projects, there should have been focus on only a single game. Rather than pit America VS. Japan, they needed to work together on a single game or let each other be while developing the games.

Nights, actually was a system seller, but it was a new ip and a little too quirky to have mass appeal like Sonic already had. You are completely right, Sega should have made Sonic the first priority and then I would add the sports lineup second. Sonic and sports drove the Genesis, much of this base went to Sony by 96.

I was there during the lifespan of the console and Sega's biggest misstep was to try and compete with Sony on it's strong suit @ 3D which meant a lot of games were left in Japan. If they released the games they had in Japan over here their biggest games like Xmen vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes ones that really showed where Sega's was strong against the PS1 and also the sheer volume of games that simply never came out in the west. If they simply offered a different experience to the PS1 the Saturn would have had a much better chance here in the west but that Bernie Stolar made it so that it's best games remained in Japan. Its funny actually people think of the Saturn as not as good as the Mega Drive however coming from the Super Nintendo the Sega Saturn is when I became a life long Sega fan. For me the Saturn in it's early years was simply the best for the kinds of games I wanted to play. 1998 was a mega disappointment for me though so many games I wanted to play remained Japan only and as a kid I didn't have access to a modded console just a poor old PAL console for me. Xmen vs Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, Grandia, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Castlevania, Vampire Savior, All Japan Pro Wrestling, Radiant Silvergun Also promised games that never released Tomb Raider 2, Resident Evil 2, Virtua Fighter 3 these dealt a huge blow to the Sega Saturn that said it was probably for the best as if the Sega Saturn versions did not live upto the PS1 counterparts then it would have probably added to the consoles reputation as inferior but I was disappointed because that was my console of choice. Here in 2022 though it's a different time and many of the games I wanted to play are accessible to us through ode's / modded consoles and translations. The Sega Saturn finally got it's due as one of the greats

Half the best fighters were stuck in Japan. We got the Action Replay Plus which was a godsend because not only did it allow imports to play on your system but also had the extra RAM to play the better looking titles too!

I always remember the exact point where I knew I had to jump ship from Saturn to PS1. When I got Tomb Raider on Saturn for Xmas 1996 along with my console, I loved it and couldn’t wait for the sequel. Then the following year I found out Saturn Tomb Raider II was cancelled and that killed it for me. I went through another whole year with my Saturn knowing that I was going to have to bite the bullet and ask for a PlayStation for my next Xmas. It still hurts to think of the day when I traded in my Saturn and all it’s games (including a CiB version of Panzer Dragoon Saga) to get £20 credit from EB. A move I regret to this very day. 😢

The PS1 was always going to be a monster at 299 since it was always going to get Final Fantasy 7. But if you take away the 32X, the early launch, keep the 399 price tag, and be way more loose with the games released in NA, they didn't release a TON of incredible games. The price would be higher, but Sega would have an ace, they have a system seller in almost all of their arcade games. Yah you could get a PS1, and Fighting Force is a fun game, but Virtua Fighter, or Sega Rally, or the Capcom fighters, if you wanted the arcade experience at home, you wanted a Saturn. I would wager the PS1 wins the gen in all worlds, but Sega could have played for a strong 2nd place over a weak N64.

I absolutely agree with this. It would have been next to impossible to knock Sony off the mountain but the n64 struggled in areas the saturn didn't. Saturn had better cd quality audio and tons of jrpgs that sueor Nintendo fans would have fawned over. I would agree it could have deft been a solid second place had they not had the continuous mishaps. Very ironic they essentially handed the keys to 2nd place to Nintendo by passing on that silicon graphics deal.

What could have save the Saturn? Sony failing to sell the PlayStation. And Nintendo not releasing Super Mario 64.
@macuser7048

But if not for Super Mario 64, there would be no push for 3D Sonic in the first place. The Dreamcast got Sonic Adventure in 1998. That game was in development as a Saturn game first. If it had released on Saturn, it would have been really impressive and sold Saturn consoles for sure! In 1998 Japan also kept the Saturn going for a little while longer anyway. I mean heck Saturn got Street Fighter Alpha 3 a year after the Dreamcast got it. It's the better version too! Freaking nuts!
