There are some incredible sites to visit in the west. Some are strange, unexplainable, historical, and all amazing. Then some leave you with more questions than answers, much like this plane crash.
The story goes something like this…
Drug runners were spotted flying over the Nevada deserts. As they tried to evade capture, they were shot down. Somehow, the occupants managed to escape, almost unscathed, and make their way to the nearest town, about 70 miles away. From that point on, they were never seen or heard from again.
On closer inspection of the aircraft, it does not appear to have been shot down. All identifying pieces of the craft are missing from the crash site. Coincidence? Cover-Up? Or well thought out Storytelling? We aren’t sure, but it was a very unique opportunity for us.

Extremely interesting find. Amazing the 2 occupants with broken legs were able to crawl 7 miles to a roadway and hitch a ride to a hospital. Wonder if both or either of them are still around, today?

This wreck matches my father's twin engine Aztec Piper. Tail number N5530Y. He sold it in the 70's. Within a week or 2 of the sale he got a call from the feds. He told them that he sold it and to whom. That was the end of the story. Thanks for the update?

That looks to be a mid 60's Piper twin engine Aztec. Considered by most to be apply described as a flying pickup truck. Can haul a bunch of weight

You might want to be VERY careful moving and looking under those aircraft parts. You never know what critter might be hiding from the sun under them! I dare say that no one walked away from that plane crash.

Wow. I'm amazed that anyone survived that crash. They should have headed directly to Vegas and played anything and everything with their kind of luck!!!

@@PinInTheAtlas That is amazing that they even survived at all when things are as mangled as everything from that poor plane. I've seen far less mutilation of the aircraft itself with no survivors and that is very badly mangled. Those 2 had done amazingly traveling 9 miles with broken legs too so obviously they had a strong will to survive (even if not enough sense to work out how much fuel they needed) and that 9 mile journey in their condition which I'm sure would have involved a lot of other lesser maybe but, still difficulties created by them. I do believe that report but till I saw that I was thinking there was no way they survived that. I'm not sure it would be easy to make people feel any sympathy for them but it does sound like one of those survival stories that could make a good movie.

Interesting visit to this crash site. The plane received its air worthiness certificate on 8/24/1976, so it was a relatively new plane. The tail number was stricken from the records in January, 1978. A very short life to a very rugged and reliable Aztec, one of Piper's best. At the time of the accident it was registered to an individual in Clear Lake, Ca. The NTSB report showed one gallon of fuel remaining in an unauthorized auxiliary tank. Adding fuel tanks to allow for a longer non-stop trip is common when moving contraband. New subscriber here. Getting caught up with all your very interesting videos. Hard to imagine anyone walked, or in this case, apparently crawled away from this crash.

Welcome, Jerry. We hope you enjoy our pins. Yes it is hard to believe, but apparently they did. And found several miles away. Although over time we believe the wreckage has been scavenged somewhat, so it probably looks a lot worse now than when it happened.

I believe that no one walked away from this crash. The wind could have spread the pieces around from the original wreckage positions.

To:@@PinInTheAtlas That is very hard to believe. The condition of the Plane Wreckage would suggest that the plane was torn to pieces, leaving little to no structure to protect the occupants of the plane. How many people were on the plane?

The wing looked like it had been picked up and moved with heavy machinery as that small area of damage does not correspond with the crash damage.Great video guys

Those bullet holes are a bit small for military air to air. Looks like someone out plinking these as targets.

Great adventure guys, very interesting! Hard to think that wreckage is survivable, but we know that you are passing information that was passed to you. We were put onto it by a local, and of course, over the years the story has been somewhat exaggerated. however, it was a drug plane, and the occupants did survive by all accounts. @@PinInTheAtlas Being the conspiracy theorist I am, I'd say because of an apparent cover-up and no numbers on it, the plane was probably owned by the CIA as part of their drug running operations. However. The counterpoint would be, that IF it was a CIA operation, one would think the CIA would have come in, rescued their people (pilot and passengers) and cleared up the entire area of wreckage. WDIK?? 😂

Definitely an Aztec (twin engined Piper) Looks like the crash site has been picked clean of most of the big components such as engines, props and landing gear. All that other stuff has undoubtedly been blown around and scattered over the years it can get pretty windy out there at times.

What a really cool Trip This Was! My Absolute favorite part of all was you BOTH laughing TOGETHER! This "Story" reminded me of a story I heard years ago from a person in a small town as well. What was appealing to me was going around asking "locals" if they knew of this particular story and what was their take...the end result was So many Versions of the so called Story events.....even the "core of the story" changed a bit too. So I can believe how a story through the years can get embellished. But after reading some of the great comments from your Fan Base and then seeing you both left a Link to the Real Deal Story...I got as excited as only an Adult Kid can get in late June while feeling like it's Christmas Morning! Only been Riding along in Tonto a short time....but feels as though we ALL have been traveling from place to place and just having fun! Cheers From Ohio

@@desertdawg3409 Yes. After looking at pictures of the Apache, I believe you're correct. There is a small, but obvious, difference in the front, side windows, of the two planes and I would agree this is an Apache.

The way I'm flip flopping, you'll probably call me Dr. Fauci. But after looking closer at the wreckage, I'm going to say it's an Aztec. Again, it's that forward window configuration that says it's an Aztec.

I know it's a rumor but there's no way men crashed landed and survived in that terrain then walked 70 miles with no injuries. No survivors.

We thought the same thing, Annalee. The story has been somewhat exaggerated over the years, but apparently, the occupants did survive and they were drug runners. Nicely done.. I'm so glad I came back and watched this again for the new comments. A few observations for your next plane: - a good source for documentation on plane accidents is NTSB (national transportation safety board) - you noted that he aircraft regisrstion number is on the tail. It is also on the dashboard in front of the pilot left seat above the cluster of instrument

The two tubes she had picked thinking they had to do with thrust where actually the exhaust for the engine nacelles. And the white fiberglass section was the right wing tip . No fuel in this location of the wing. The larger piece of wreckage was the right wing and cockpit section. That contain the engine throttle quadrant. The tail and engines where recovered during the investigation.

That’s a throttle quadrant it controls the engine ,propeller and flaps

Throttle quadrant holds throttle, Mixture, and Propeller RPM, used to manage manifold pressure, propeller Pitch/RPM, and air/fuel mixture.

As for the bullet holes, first is to look for shell casings on the ground around the bits with holes in them. Not guaranteed you'll find any, just move the top soil around some. Also, who ever was shooting at it could have been far away at the time, the wreckage would make good long distance target.

Thank you for being "snake" safe. That was my first thought. Just think, 70 miles from the nearest town. That's a couple of 3 days of walking.

I believe the first serial number you found at 7:14 is a data plate that can identify this wreck. Send a picture to Piper and I bet they'll help you. Look at the control column at 12:19 and you can count 6 levers, 7 if you count the flap handle, and 2 were the throttle, 2 were the mixture controls, and 2 were the prop controls; so this is a twin engine aircraft and it was a low wing aircraft. Also at 13:15 you can see the cabin air control knobs and the Master Switch which connects the battery to the aircraft electrical system. All these should help to figure out what Piper airplane this is.

Looks like a twin, like an ATP Piper Seminole. You can see that there was an engine in that wing piece you were analyzing. Cables would run throughout the aircraft in those pulleys. they would controle the ailerons' elevator, and it's "pilot controlled" tab, and rudder, but not the flaps.

I too see the engine in the wing section which I will go out on a limb here and say that the aircraft was also a lower wing aircraft with twin engines

@@_DJGravity Hi Daniel. You are right. Even though they thought that the wing was over the top ( semi cantilever design ), They really did not know. They made no pretense about not knowing much about aircraft. Nice people that they are, they need us to help them out here.

Very cool Vid. I am a pilot, and I used to be the safety officer in my local Civil Air Patrol squadron. I had the job of reporting on general aviation accidents each month, and it was depressing learning how people end up in shredded balls of flaming AL-U-Minium as you Royal Subjects say, otherwise referred to by us Yanks as Aluminum. I was thinking this thing looked like a Piper Aztec, and that is a twin engine plane. The framing on one of the wing pieces aligns with that theory - I think it supported one of the engines. Single engine planes have the engine out in front of the pilot, but twins have them on the wings. When an NTSB investigator starts their look at a crash sight, they try to find all four corners of the plane. That means the nose, tail and wing tips. If they are close together, then it came straight down-ish. If they can't find one or more corners at the site, it came off the plane in the air, and could be miles away from the eventual crash site. Since there isn't a lot of airplane parts here, it lends credence that the plane was shot down and came apart in the air, but unless the pilot and/or passenger were able to walk on water, I highly doubt they would have walked away - even in the unlikely event they had parachutes and were unscathed by the plane being torn apart in the air. However, people could have taken parts over the years. So, we will really never know for sure. I read one of the posts that indicated the poster found the NTSB report, it would be cool to have that link if they read this. One slight correction though; the wing would be on the underside of the fuselage, known as a "low wing" v. something like a Cessna Skyhawk or "high wing". If the occupants DID walk away, I have to believe that souvenir hunters raided this wreck - there is NOT a lot left. In fact, I'm surprised there are no engines or parts of them, lending credence to the "target Practice" theory - bullet holes are from after the event. I'm also amazed that this thing is in so many pieces and yet no burn marks. Still, with that terrain and it being a retractable gear plane, if they landed gear up those rocks would have had their way with that structure and it wouldn't have been pretty. I love stuff like this; thank you for this video!

Now that I read information at the link provided above (yeah, ol' Eagle Eye here missed it), it all fits. But, that site was picked apart ALOT. This is not the way the plane came to rest. By the way, the fiberglass pieces are engine cowling and perhaps the aux. fuel tank. Running out of gas explains the lack of burn marks. So, it all fits. Also, Aztecs had HUGE useful load - meaning they could carry a lot of weight - ideal for drug runners. Problem is, it's a slow twin (relatively speaking). Cessna 310's and Cessna Centurions (being a single engine aircraft v. the 310 which is what Sky King flew in the later episodes) were highly prized for drug running because of their range and carrying capacity. Greeting again, and thanks for an interesting but rather macabre adventure. I have seen several explorations of small plane crash sites on you tube and they all rather look alike. That is, many scattered and varied remnants. Very fine presentation. CHEERS!

@@PinInTheAtlas Many thanks for the link about the crash site information. That rather closes the circle about the intent of the flight and subsequent crash. It appears that quite a lot of remnants were either salvaged or taken for souvenirs prior to your arrival. It's hard to believe that anyone survived that crash only to be charged for criminal activity. CHEERS!

Piper Aircraft we’re low wing aircraft. Based on the pieces presented it was a twin engine. Serial numbers are presented on the passenger side fuselage.

Piper Aztec is well known to me as my dad owned and I “flew” several hours in right seat. Drug runners loved the plane’s cargo capacity.

That was a twin engine Piper, the cowling on the wing at 15:26 was for the right engine.

It was an Apache and it had MetcoAire Tip tanks for extra range @ 2:46 minute mark. Someone carefully unscrewed the nav light and fuel filler caps from that part. At 10:02 they were looking at an exhaust augmentor tube that was under the wings behind the engines. Aztecs did not have those. The storm window @6:01 is hinged at front unlike the Aztec which had the hinge at the bottom, and the emergency exit window was common to both models. Bullet holes were probably installed after the crash and I seriously doubt anybody survived that crash unless they were using a parachute. At 11:37, you are looking at the right wing and the engine firewall, not the cockpit section. You can see the dark area was the non skid paint for the wing walk area, leading up to the cockpit door. At 12:36 you are looking at the hydraulic power pack that ran the landing gear and flaps. A serial number on that won't matter much. 27-2001 is the aircraft serial number. 13:30, no that is not part of the engine. It is a control cable pulley which would be part of the aileron, rudder or elevator or stabilator control system. 18:00, you got the left flap correct. 18:30 is a Fram engine air inlet filter. The fiberglass was from the nose section.

@@PinInTheAtlas I would still like to know how anybody survived a crash that violent and torn up. But, the Aztec has a steel tube frame under the fuselage skin, so in that regard it is somewhat like a race car roll cage. BTW, there is a story about a couple of guys who were flying in Alaska in a Piper Super Cub. They crashed and survived, but were pinned inside the wreckage when their feet were trapped by the collapsing steel tube structure. Then, the grizzlys came by and had them for lunch. Guns were stored where they could not reach them.

this airframe apears to be from a Piper Aztec that was built in 2001 and the tube piece is called a Augmenter tube that is part of the Engine exaust. this is a six seat .twin engine aircraft.

That fuselage pretty sure is a Piper Azetc (older PA27)... Twin engine loved by runners.. could carry a ton at 200+ mph... 200+ gallons AvGas. Flight from south of border would have only been couple hour flight. I agree with some others, doubtful if anyone 'walked away'... Ironically, I actually crashed today 6/25/84, 37 years ago today in the water off Jersey coast and mine was torn up less... Kinda eerie looking at another crash site today. Hard crash and debris field that long seems unlikely to be survivable.

My Bad... I believe I was incorrect on model I believe it was a Piper PA32 'Cherokee 6' in Wellington NV... Not shot down or any survivors. Only crash in that area and time period of a Piper was December 28, 1968 - 38 28N 119 07W - Piper PA 32 - N4115R Blue/White - 3 Fatalities - Recovered 6/69.. You can research more from there.. aviation-safety.net/wikibase/13740 True, was a single engine.. The windows is what threw me off... Easier looking at whole plane than pieces..

I was correct to start... N5001Y crash 12/6/77 the twin engine Piper PA-23-250 Aztec. 2 occupants survived and recovered 10 miles from crash site saying they had a car accident... Were hauling marijuana recovered from crash site.. NTSB says 'fuel starvation' cause of crash.

If you guys only found one engine there... The plane could have been either above or below the fuselage but from what I saw that fuselage it looked like it was a low wing..... Probably a six-seater long range single engine Piper......

In the 60s and 70s I was in Arizona (raised there actually) there were a number of small aircraft stolen from small airports, to be found later crashed in another part of the state. What would happen, a smuggler would steal and fly very low into Mexico where they would load the plane with drugs and sneak back across the border to a predetermined location, dry lake wide dirt road and land/crash land unload and beat feet. Often the aircraft the aircraft would be set on fire. Cowboys down there always went armed because you never what you were going to run into. P.S. Long way to go for target practice

Piper planes have been made where I live in Vero Beach, Florida. Since 1961 they have been here. Interesting if maybe those serial numbers can be traced. I know a couple people and wi see what can be found out about this. Good video guys.

Mr. Erbele just took my thunder. I was going to say that one part of the cockpit you presented showed part of a center console with two sets of levers side by side. They looked like throttle and manifold pressure controls. Part of one wing also showed the rear part of the left engine nacelle. I suspect the crash site has been partly salvaged because you didn't find engines. Also, in that desert, no one walked 70 miles after a crash with little or no water.

@@richardbeee I did find it... the 'shoot down' part was a 'legend'... it was fuel starvation by NTSB report. Actually both walked away with injuries and found on a road 10 miles away and taken to Nye hospital... Yes! Very lucky guys!

@@richardbeee Still remarkable for the length of the debris field. I've seen smaller fields and much, much more loss. Flying into a mountain, even slowly with dead engines is gonna be a Pucker Factor 10! Just my guess without directions N/S... he was flying 'uphill' ripping tail off at base first and heavier fuselage was highest up hill.

The throttle quadrant with the flap lever is from a Piper twin most likely an Aztec. The wing section has the wing walk and back end of the right engine nacelle. It was a good airplane, if it was used for drugs because it can carry a good load. They should know that Piper made low wing airplanes beginning in the 1960s with the exception of the two place Super Cub. They can go back and look at the Aztec and it’ll make more sense to them.

8:13 is a leading edge of a wing. 9:36.. Empty weight of whole aircraft is about 2,800#. Light for the size. 10:27 is control cable pulley guides. 13:30 another cable pulley/guide// Plane was wire controlled for surfaces (wing&tail) !2:10 It was a low wing twin engine. 13:03.. are there any prefixes before the stamped numbers.. 3693? PA23.. PA27... Piper always had a P prefix to start that I know of 14:20 the switches is the cockpit area... PA27 was a larger 6 seat plane. Early ones were called 'Apache', later to Aztec in late 60's/70's.. First produced in early 1950's. 17:17... Aileron... and flaps on the wing 19:23 most likely part of cabin or nose area... hard to tell with such small pieces. The site from what I saw is pretty picked over... Most crashes like that only engines can be identified. If busted up bad wouldn't have been salvaged and pieces of engines would have been still around debris field. We have a lot of military crash sites within 25 mile radius here... I'll send a link for military crash sites. I'll get back to you... Pop is an FAA crash investigator I'll run video past him.

It was mostly intact when it crashed. It was ripped apart by salvagers. That's why the engine, landing gear and tail are gone. And the 750 pounds of weed. Oh and they crawled away, about 9 miles with broken legs.

I don't believe anyone could have walked away from that crash. I'm a licensed commercial pilot and I've seen several crash results and for an aircraft to break up that badly indicate a high speed impact with very little chance of survival, let alone the ability to walk away.

fuel starvation - - engines shut down folks in the plane bail with chutes - - depending on altitude of chute deployment and slowing of descent one would expect injuries to lower extremities such as broken legs. Even the best training wouldn't help at night because you wouldn't be able to see the ground til you were almost on it so flaring your chute to give lift before impact would be close to impossible and given the rocky terrain hit an roll would also cause extensive injury. One thing for sure they didn't ride it out and walk /limp or crawl away to survive they would had to be out before impact. You don't see sky dive schools using twin low wing planes for the very reason fighter planes have ejector seats to get you clear of trailing parts of the aircraft at high speed - - high wing configuration allows you to drop down away from parts at the rear of the plane. Planes for troops in the military are way longer with the tail section elevated in level flight giving more clearance even on a static line jump

I wouldn't be grabbing sharp metal pieces bare handed, out in the middle of nowhere, without LEATHER GLOVES. But then I'm a bit cautious. Also would be wary of rattle snakes seeking shade.

Serial numbers usually date the parts manufacturer date. Looks like its a part from 2001

By looking at the engine controls, the engine nacelle on one of the wings and the design of what was left of the cabin, I say you possibly have a Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche.

Great job, of trying to find out what kind of plane it is. From the limited information that was available in this broadcast and your findings of several part I.D. Labels. It appears to be a, Piper PA-44 180 Seminole family of aircraft. I wish you had made a complete circle of the aircraft wing set as this would have given more needed information as to determine the exact aircraft type. The aircraft tail numbers would have given you the aircraft I.D. which could have been run through the FAA. The aircraft tail numbers are usually on the fuselage or tail of the plane. It seems like someone had removed the aircraft I.D. that would have been on the fuselage of the plane prior to you on sight visit. Also the engine and landing gear appear to have been removed as well.

@@PinInTheAtlas Thank you, for responding back it was unexpected. I did check out the link and it was detailed very well. The aircraft type and numbers info are accurate. I’m pretty sure the investigators who surveyed the crash are probably the ones who removed the engines and landing gear and tail numbers to build there case. It was a good story. It's an interesting video but fraught with inaccuracies. You should have brought someone along who understands aircraft and their various components. The aircraft you found, and based upon the serial number you found, was a Piper Aztec 250....Also, as one comment noted, you need to be more careful in remote areas with regard to rattle snakes under such things as wrecked aircraft components. They survived the crash and were picked up by police. The story goes that they were taken to hospital and were never seen again. Crazy!

Who knows why the plane crashed, but I highly doubt anyone walked away from it. I've been to plane wrecks like that and the people are usually in just as many pieces as the plane.

I would just venture a guess that the 2001 in the serial number was year of manufacture. If so the drug runner angle would be busted as urban legend.

That old plane might have been a Piper - Cherokee model. Those cylinder pieces you showed earlier were for the wing tips. I’m getting the design shape in my mind. This old plane might have carried six to perhaps eight passengers. They were built for speed and manoeuvre ability too. Drug runners would’ve loved them I’d say.

At 10:35, I believe that is where the aileron pedals would go. These are where the pilot would have had his feet. Looks like the bottom of the aircraft was tore out by those rocks. Old ("vintage") aircraft weren't designed for crash safety. Newer designed like those from Cirrus have crush zones and even ballistic recovery parachutes.

Don’t you mean the rudder pedals? The ailerons are controlled by turning the yoke left or right like a car steering wheel.
