In this video, I sit down with lactation expert Kimberly Durdin to discuss the challenges of breastfeeding versus pumping as my daughter's first birthday approaches. As a mom, I quickly realized that transitioning from pumping to breastfeeding is not as simple as I thought. My boobs have become accustomed to pumping, and my daughter has struggled with latching.
Fortunately, Kimberly Durdin, a licensed midwife, internationally board-certified lactation consultant, childbirth educator, and doula trainer, joins me to guide me through this next chapter. Her expertise and knowledge have been invaluable in navigating this journey.
Please note that this video contains a trigger warning, as breastfeeding talk can be triggering for some individuals. I want to emphasize that every breastfeeding journey is unique and beautiful in its own way.
If you're a mom, I would love to hear your tips and experiences in the comments below. Let's support each other on this incredible motherhood journey!

In Germany the nurses recommend using silver cups for nipple to put them on your irritated nipples while wearing a bra. You can put some of your own milk on your nipples and cover them with these silver cups. You can put the cups in the fridge before so they habe a cooling effect that helps also. Another thing they do in Germany that helps a lot is put fat wool in the bra on your nipple or woolfat as a creme. You should have time periods were your niples are free, so they can dry. After pumping you can use some of the milk and put it on your breast and niple and let it dry. You should clean your breast like 5 times per day with just water (no soap or other products). You can use Water or saline solution to clean your breast with clean hands. What could help your baby to connect your free breast with eating again is you could feed her with the bottle while your breast is free. That way your baby would start to have a positive connection with getting milk and your breast. It also would help feeding your baby after pumping a bit out of you breast, so its not that extremely much milk in your breast and your baby don’t get exhausted while drinking. Its really not narcissistic to want to feed your baby true your breast and get in contact while feeding. Its the opposite. Its the connection of love and also let some really important happyness hormones free in you and your baby. ❤️

I just want to say how impressive it is that you were able to feed your kids breastmilk for this long with such a challenging experience. Just once again shows a mother's love, what she's willing to suffer for the wellbeing of her children. I don't think I would've been able to continue this long. @@shanboody sure! I can’t praise them enough. I started going at about 20 weeks or so for my prenatal visits and they made my husband and I feel like family right away. I always knew I wanted an out of hospital experience because of the black maternal statistics. I loved KSLA’s approach of catering to every part of the birthing experience (mental state, nutrition, family dynamic, mom’s body, etc). I also did their lactation class and child birthing classes which were really helpful. (Side note: all the mommy friends I have now I met through KSLA and that has been one of my biggest gifts from them. Such great support there.) I did a water birth at 39 weeks at the center and had no complications. It was the most painful yet empowering thing I’ve ever experienced. I had Ms. Kim and another midwife, my doula and my husband there and it was just what I needed to push through, literally lol. I loved that I just felt “normal” after birth. Able to eat and walk around and not feel drowsy or confined to a bed. We were able to go home within 4-5 hrs and start our new life of three. They do 4 postpartum visits (2 at home and 2 at the center) which all went well. And I love that even now (my daughter is a year and half now) I can still text Kim at any time with questions and she is available and willing to help. I highly recommend them to all future mommies. Another side note: I have nothing but good things to say about KSLA but that’s not to say my parenting journey has been perfect or easy, because it hasn’t. Just want to be clear. I’m happy to talk about any aspect of my pregnancy or parenting journey as well. Hope this was helpful 🧡 And thank you for having this platform, I love your content.

This is bringing back so many emotions. My 11 year old birth was so amazing. She was born b4 anyone was ready at the hospital, so I had a long time with her with cord attached. I had read about the attachment theory and I laid her on my belly. Then I watched her bounce her little head all the way up my chest and find my breast, attach and then went to town. She latched for 45 min straight. The nurses were amazing, they cut the cord really long after about 20 min and then just left us alone. I miss that feeling so much

My goodness...this video helped me soooo much to process my feelings about stopping breastfeeding at six months. My baby just stopped breastfeeding at 5 months when he exclusively breastfed for all of his life and one day he was like... I can't do it anymore and I was devastated. Pumping was so hard with a regular 9-5 job so I just stopped at 6 months and went to formula crying all the way because of fear of missing the bond we had while breastfeeding but surprisingly the bond is better because I'm not in pain trying to get this milk to feed him constantly. I feel more free to just spend whatever time I have enjoying seeing him grow because babies really gonna live their best lives, once they're fed they are happy. He is 7 months now and thriving and that's all that matters.

Important conversation! Thank you for sharing! I see this a lot in my work as a midwife, that breastfeeding starts out fine but then when there are bumps in the road there is a lack of knowledge in where to turn for help. Or that the people that are supposed to help give the wrong information. I think it’s important to let yourself grief what could have been and not push away those emotions as they may fester inside. Thank you both for your openness on this topic ❤

Oh Shan, Im only 5min in and so appreciative of this video! I love your vulnerability so much and have no doubt it makes such a difference in your viewers lives! Your mothering and parenthood videos are my favorite. Here when you said, "I have no idea who birthed my baby" at the hospital, I thought YOU DID IT girl! I know you meant what OB was in the room but even the language in that statement is so important! YOU birthed her, YOU delivered her, the only other person who had a big role in that entrance was Xya herself. When you talked about feeling like your issues and concerns were dismissed because you can produce and that's the end of the convo.. That is such a prevalent theme in motherhood! In so many areas. Thanks for speaking to it. Okay, back to the video❤

Thank you so much for this. This info is priceless. Lactation consultants are indeed doing some interesting and much needed detective work. I hope you find peace with where you're at. Your baby is beautiful and thriving, and because of your story, you have and will be helping many mothers out there. Life is finite Jared, and while babies are a headache while super young, they're your future mature life crew and companions. They are very much worth the down payment. Have faith, pray for a son. And even if you don't get one, it is universally known rhat it's the daughters that keep a house warm and beautiful. Their love is unmatched. A son's love is powerful but a daughter's love is beyond rejuvenating.

I'm the opposite, breast feeding has never hurt me and I've never had infection or mastitis or anything but no matter what I try I can't produce enough, I can only provide enough for 1/4 of his needs and he's 6 months old now. I went to a LC which told me to see a specialist and he got a lip and tongue tie lasered. I've tried multiple supplements. I've pumped after BF. I've power pumped. Etc 😞

My mom was hurt by it, but I ended up being a very independent person and I did not rely on my mother for everything rather on myself. I was prescribed a cream and then oral, both cases it came back. I do know it’s a me thing tho bc I’m not as on it when it comes to changing bras and Falanges plus I’m ALWAYS in a bra bc of the nipple pain plus size. I do feel as if I bit the bullet for ten days and took medication plus practiced extreme care with cleaning whatever touched my nipples, I could clear this. I’m just…not prioritizing this, I gotta call it what it is

Hello! you do not need to be a doctor. you just need to have some kind of background in biology, health sciences, public health or even a doula or nurse can become one. Enroll in the lactation program (usually it is 90 hours of education), but then you need about 1000hours of clinical hours within 5 years (regulations vary from state to state so check with the specific board), pass the exam.

The birthing centre... i feel like this should be somethjng that is commonly a thing, everywhere. She knew so much and it was so refreshing to see someone who had really good knowledge just answer some questions... i am childfree but its still important to know these tidbits... like changing the nipple attachments weekly - imagine how many times she has been to medical health "professionals" with the repeated infections and none of them asking enough questions to determine this or to know this information to pass on... obviously no offence to them because they are not taught this either... i just think our society has really shunned the opportunity to learn about motherhood better.... to learn about women better... where are our spaces? And i agree that many will learn these things "on the job" which makes the whole parenting part more chaotic. We are just wholly unprepared for parenting as a global community and we need more spaces to help educate, in advance as well as on the job. Great video Shan and thank you for honestly sharing your journey. Long time subscriber and friend, in my head, lol. Please recieve my comment as probing the bigger conversation and not a direct comment or projection of your personal circumstances. Although it is a projection of my concerns regarding parenting as a whole. Okloveyoubye I'm in the uk btw.

I love that her husband had a vasectomy so she doesn't have to take birth control pills until she's 55. Good man! How long should a woman breastfeed? I stopped at 6 months. Why do women breastfeed babies who have teeth? They can eat regular food. I don't understand. The teacher is incredible!

Get a nipple shield. It will be helpful. It’s helps with the pin and if she’s use to bottles it will help with that too

Quick question. If the child is almost 1, could the child just be tired of breastfeeding? I would think that the mom "missing" the closeness of breastfeeding shouldn't over rule the child just wanting to stop.

My mom breastfed me until the day I spit the breastmilk back into her face so I'm thinking sure, when the kid quits, let 'em quit! lol

I've learned that no child would naturally stop breastfeeding before it's at least 2.5 years old. If it stops before it's usually due to suckling on bottles, pacifiers and such things, that can cause the babys preferences to shift. Drinking from a bottle is easier so at some point the baby wouldn't want to latch onto the breast anymore. If you want a child to keep breastfeeding for all the benefits this has, even in toddler age, one should stay away from bottles, pacifiers, sippy cups etc.

@@lainacavios Or you could just pump breastmilk into a bottle as opposed to having a child who is able to speak asking you pull up your shirt?

@@lainacavios Most parents can't afford to keep a toddler dependent on breasts especially if the child goes to daycare. Eventually, they're going to need cups or other methods especially for oral health.

BTW Shan, one reason why pumping hurts it's because you have the wrong size for your nipple. You need to check the right millimeter size for your specific pump!
