THE STRANGERS is writer/director Bryan Bertino's directorial debut, and it's often hailed as one of the best home invasion films ever made. Starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, it follows a dishevelled couple who are soon senselessly tormented and attacked by three masked horrors.

The part that annoyed the hell out of me about this movie was when James decided that the smart thing to do is leave the room with only one entrance where they had a plan that (tragically) could be successful, to go running in the dark woods with the gun, alone. And he is immediately knocked out because obviously. Like their plan would have worked. They'd either be able to shoot one of the strangers or the strangers would give up because they're at a stalemate. But anything would be better than leaving the only potential way they both could have survived

A few other problems with the movie is that sometimes the Strangers do senseless things that don't even seem to be logical or add anything to the plot. Like when they write KILLER or when the woman is getting silently chase by one the strangers.... but the stranger just leaves her, what was the point? Also, from a comment from another review, the line "the next time will be easier". Easier than this? Funny enough, it was harder the next time we knew about them and all died (apparently). Aside from the points I and the video made, I think the movie could have been benefited with a few more characters being stalked.

I remember watching it in theaters when it came out and just being absolutely gobsmacked, I was both terrified and I wanted to see it again(which I did, many times). And I love that you brought up the 70’s influence, Straw Dogs(1971), See No Evil(1971) and Black Christmas(1974) walked so The Strangers(2006) could run.

Nah, I disagree about the scene with Glenn Howerton's character being frustrating for not turning around. As far as he was concerned he already checked each corner and I love the feeling the dread building up with Baghead slowly creeping behind him as "Mama Tried" plays. And even if he DID turn around, would that really change much? Baghead had an axe at the ready to bring right down onto him before he gets shot. So if he turned around he'd probably just be met with an axe to the face and the payoff we got instead I think made for a much more impactful scene. But anyway, I love The Strangers. Definitely one of my favorite horror movies of recent times and I love the slow burn and build-up it has. The shot with Baghead watching Kristen in the kitchen is one of my favorites in all of horror as is the simple motive of the killers just being because they were home. I really don't know how I feel about this upcoming prequel trilogy because what makes the trio so scary is how we don't know anything about them. We don't know what their day jobs are or what their relationships are (are they a family? friends? psychos that found each other online?). I'm worried that a prequel (trilogy at that) is going to give us more information on the trio than we need to know. I also seem to recall at the end of the movie one of them says "It will be easier next time.", implying this was the first time they did something like this. It just makes a prequel feel really unnecessary.

RE: The Glenn Howerton Sequence Gonna have to hard disagree with you here. It's a cliche to say so, but I think we have a tendency to forget that most characters in horror movies don't KNOW they're in a horror movie. If your friend called you up in the middle of the night ("like a firefly...") and told you he just got into an awkward situation with his girlfriend and needs a ride home... If you get there and there's loud music playing and broken dishes lying around, you're not gonna immediately jump to the conclusion that there must be a murderous home invasion afoot. You're gonna think they probably had a fight and are now off sulking in separate rooms. AT WORST you might fear that things escalated and one of them wound up hurting the other. All the while, the natural human tendency to avoid facing up to unpleasant truths til absolutely necessary is going to have you rationalizing whatever fears you DO have to yourself. I think Howerton's actions are perfectly realistic and reasonable here; he has no reason to suspect any sort of outside threat.
@RocklinGraves
@RocklinGraves Ай бұрын
He got attacked in his car before going into the house though. One of the strangers smashes his window which is why he gets out and goes inside, so he absolutely knew that there was something more than a bad argument going on. Then with the way he’s slowly moving and checking around corners, I just don’t see how he isn’t aware that there’s a threat around. If he wasn’t attacked before going in I probably wouldn’t have AS MUCH of an issue with it, but with that happening it just makes it impossible for me to see it that way. If getting your window smashed and then finding the door open with everything in disarray inside isn’t enough to make him think there’s an outside threat then I’m not sure what it would take

It's been a while; I don't remember that part. In that case, why not get the Hell outta Dodge and drive to the nearest police station or something? I guess he's just a really good friend... Where did this projectile come from? Were any of the Strangers actually visible from where he was sitting?

The first time my wife and I watched it she asked me to keep the lights on in the house when we went to sleep that night. She did not want any darkness anywhere. The actors in this are brilliant and the bleakness is stifling at times. I have only watched the film about four times but it really is a gut punch, especially that ending. I just watched this movie for the first time last night. I had known about it, but I had never taken the time to watch it. I was very disappointed in it. After a great first 30-40 minutes, the movie just completely lost me with characters making bad decisions and villains who could teleport. I eventually decided that I could adjust my expectations and like this movie if it gave me a good, smart final girl who gives some payback, but that doesn’t happen. Where it lost me was when the guy knows there’s danger but leaves his girl inside unprotected while he wanders around with a shotgun. No man would ever leave a woman he cares for alone and unprotected. It just wouldn’t happen. He would have her follow him and watch his back. Then, not too long after, she decides to run out into the yard barefoot. I wouldn’t walk around my yard barefoot because I know how many thistles are out there. That’s just lunacy. By that point, my arms were folded in disgust with how bad this movie was. I had heard this movie was really good, and the first half really was, but the last half was dreadful. By the way, a couple of home invasion movies I think are far superior are: Wait Until Dark (1967) and Siege (1983). Both are currently on Tubi.

I definitely agree that they act stupid as far as how they handle things, but I also kinda got the impression that James and Kristen might be…sorta dumb. Like, I felt like the botched proposal, and then the tense awkwardness afterwards, implied that he didn’t really understand what was happening around him or was oblivious, and she was overthinking things or “paranoid.” Maybe I’m reaching, lol, but yeah, always got the impression at least that James was just a dumb guy to start.

I always thought The Strangers would've made a great short film, but even at an hour and a half it feels bloated to me. I like to imagine an alternate universe where it forms a trilogy with Incident On and Off a Mountain Road and Cigarette Burns as the three definitive episodes of Masters of Horror. Love that Merle Haggard needle drop, though. You should cover Bertino's The Monster from 2016.

Still and all, wrote this one off as a paint by numbers clunker. Caught part of it again many yrs later on a free movie app and it didn't seem as insultingly bad as I'd remembered it. However....

New to the channel & diggin the content. I agree with the review as a whole. Excellent film, of any genre. The only ways I can think of to really justify how dismissive he is about her concerns initially is maaaaaybe it’s a hint to what could be part of what’s driven a wedge between them? Or when you’re in what’s obviously a failing, ended relationship, but the other person still depends on you or comes to you to solve their problems when you just want it to be done cause you know it’s over? Idk lol Always found that part about the film a bit frustrating myself, cause even those explanations are just assumptions.

I did catch this one on the theater. While not perfect, it is definitely scary. Kind of surprised it's only had one sequel up till now. I think these charactesr can sustain three movies, and I also think Renny Harlan has the directorial chops to pull it off, so I'm hopeful.

This movie is incredibly scary! One of my favorites. Those 2 boys that were spreading the word of God and walked into the house of the brutal massacre was terrifying and heartbreaking. The trauma they endured would most likely haunt them the rest of their lives. I really wanted to see them in the sequel sharing their experience. At the beginning when the boy Jordan called 911 telling the operator "there's blood everywhere" still haunts me to this day.

I feel like some of the decisions are partially "not believing the woman who knows something bad is happening" which sadly happens in real life. I think that explains his quick hall glance and immediate dismissal.

If the killers knew that Dennis Reynolds was is in the house, they’d have ran away screaming, lucky that they escaped “the implication”

Yes! The relationship problems make the protagonists relatable to the viewer, making the movie scarier as it conveys the message that this could happen to anyone

I’m only 14 minutes into your video so maybe you mention it but can we take a minute to appreciate the actual knocks. Yes, they’re cheap and easy jump scares but they’re affective! I still remember watching this in theaters and feeling the door knocks in my chest. Instant fear and suspense!
