Ari Aster's debut feature film HEREDITARY released in 2018 and became a massive hit right away, solidifying itself over the years as one of the peaks of the genre. It's depiction of the cold hand of grief through the lens of demons and cults has resulted in years of analysis, and today I'm weighing in on the discussion and talking about what I find so impressive about this film.

the most stomach turning scenes to me is one that i didn't even realize until someone pointed it out. the scene where peter's dad makes a comment about having told everyone to take their shows off in the house and you realize that the shoe prints are from the cult members being in their house and not from the family, and it shows that even at that point in the movie the cult was already inside

I honestly hate this movie. I hate it because there is never any hope or any means of fighting back. The family is doomed no matter what and you pretty much sense it from beginning to end. This is a theme in many horror films as of late. If you watch modern horror you would notice that almost every time evil wins in the end. It’s almost as if Hollywood horror producers really worship evil entities and are paying homage to their evil gods on the big screen. It’s just a creepy vibe in many of these films. When you watch the Exorcist, possibly the greatest horror movie of all time, you have the sense of hope that you could fight pure evil with good, that the priests aren’t fighting a winless battle. The Father makes the ultimate sacrifice in the end by forcing the spirit to leave the girl and take him then throwing himself out the window. He sacrificed himself to save a child. The priest lost his life, but evil also lost and the little girl was saved. You won’t find that in modern horror though. Just hopelessness with evil prospering. It’s grown old quick.

@jjones9822 I hear you, I feel this way about the film Eden Lake, watched it once and will never rewatch it because its so utterly bleak. I personally dont mind an unhappy ending, but it does seem to be a common thing now that evil prevails, which is perhaps is relied on too heavily for the sake of making an impact

I always took the schizophrenia claims about Annie's brother to be just what they assumed he had bc he said their mom was trying to put people inside of him. Bc we find out later that was true. I took the "hereditary" to be a double meaning about everyone thinking the family had a mental illness that was being passed down. And then later the hereditary part of it was bc the grandmother passed down this curse to her family.

I didn’t know if you noticed her or not because some people had to turn up the brightness of their tv to see her. There isn’t anything alluding that she’s up there, the camera just lingers with this wideshot of the whole bedroom as Peter is waking up and it’s left up to the viewer to catch it. Hereditary is one of those movies that you watch quietly. Unsettling tension in the air as you can’t believe what you just witnessed. Even with someone to watch it with, you can’t even look at the other person without that awkward big eyed stare and probably can only silently mouth OMG…..then slowly turn back towards the movies screen and try to stay grounded. One scene after another that has you trying to understand how to feel. That one scene….and the bone chilling scream the following morning……😶😶😶😶

i 100% agree about alex being whimpery or whatever when breaking down i mean he also has his panic attack and asks his friend to hold his hand which is kind of something a kid might do, not usually a teenage boy, so in times of distress he reverts to childlike behavior which says something important…usually people who have a response like that have trauma from childhood, like he has from waking up covered in paint thinner thinking his mother was trying to murder him 🤷‍♀️ and there are absolutely no coincidences in this movie, i’ve watched hours of video essays and video deep dives on hereditary so i know 😂 ari aster and the team that put this movie together are insane geniuses

*edited to add some actual thoughts* FWIW, Aster has stated that while metaphorical, the supernatural stuff is 100% real. I was so relieved when they didn't explain away everything at the end. It was becoming a bit of a tired trope around the time this movie came out and Ari proved you can still get your point across without taking away the supernatural horror aspect. Also, I could be wrong about this one, but I believe the cult was putting that 'dittanty of crete' stuff in the weed in the same way they were putting it in Charlie's baby bottle. This is pretty deep into the weeds stuff though. Regardless, it's an absolutely incredible film and a must watch for everyone. Not just horror fans.
@Nylak-Otter
@Nylak-Otter 20 күн бұрын
Eh, it was the inclusion of the supernatural that ruined it for me. A horror movie can't be horror if it isn't at least a little disturbing, and a story can't be disturbing if the source of its conflict doesn't actually exist. Then it just becomes a silly ghost story you tell to kids at a campfire, because there's no inherent danger anymore.

Also it makes me wanna take a shower and never see it again, just to go see it again some time later, cause its so incredible. To me its one of those movies that gets scarier and more anxiety-inducing the more you empathise with it and its characters. Like The Babadook or Sinister, a lot of its horror comes from the effects the plot has on its characters while it takes place. And if you immerse yourself in it you really feel how messed up all that is happening really is. Wonderful review, i think you did it justice.

All of Aster's great style choices aside, what makes this film work is that it's about demons based on actual demonology and the hundreds of years of crazy theologians keeping track of this stuff, and not demons 'as Hollywood presents them'. Because that's what Exorcist is. You can't really blame Exorcist for being that, though, because it's not like it's copying itself. But it also came out in an era where people were amazed you could show realistic blood and voilence in movies for the first time since the 1930s. It's kind of just a hokey Catholic yarn that goes hard. But it's not particularly well-researched. It's about as complex as Constantine. Hereditary, on the other hand, is delving into vital aspects of demonology like how you're gifted sight of the future so you can make infallible plans. You can do things like predict where someone will be standing so you can drop a big ol' rock on they head. And that it requires humans doing the heavy lifting and summoning them. And the greatest application of that, the grandmother putting a plan in motion that was all going to play out after her own death just so she could get rewards in Hell. It's a true exploration of blasphemous evil. And as far as I'm concerned, you don't get that often. And it's so brilliant because you can peel off layer after layer and it's kind of shocking how little actually makes it into frame that doesn't have something to do with this summoning ritual. Characters, objects, words. Almost everything is there for that one thing. From a plot perspective it's actually much more in line with Omen than Exorcist. Anyway, I love this movie it's a 10/10 actual modern masterpiece with some of the best acting and writing in any genre.

I find Hereditary strangely comforting. Seeing this family on screen is a mirror of my own experiences with familial mental illness. Thankfully I've managed to keep mine in check with therapy, medication, and support. You're never free of the darkness completely, but you can face it as an equal. Such an incredible movie, definitely up there with the greats.

An absolute modern classic!!! Everything about it is simply perfect! Im gutted I never saw this on the big screen. That opening shot of the replica mini house, then zooms into Peter's bedroom and it becomes real, I was like "Woah! This is gonna be some movie!!" Toni Collette and Alex Wolff's performances are unnerving and brilliant!! The r'ship between them is very hard to watch at times. Ari Aster was on his way.... and things got even better with Midsommar!! But, back to Hereditary... Oh My Goodness...that drive home after the party stunned me and stayed with me for days! As did the classroom freak-out. The first thing I found especially 'odd' and creepy was the photo of the grandma at her funeral!! This is one Blu-Ray that will sit proudly on my shelf for years to come :) Great review Evan...as always 😜

This movie brought me back to the first “joys” of watching horror movies. I felt a deep scare inside me the first time I watched it, which was thrilling for me as a fan of the genre.

As Novum perfectly put it in their 4 hour + breakdown, Annie subconsciously may have done the sleep walking episode to Peter because of some distain and their overall relationship BUT I think she attempted to burn down her whole house too. Not just Peter. Novum cleverly points out the Annie’s psyche was trying to save her entire from doom because it was inevitable that Paimon would succeed unless all of them died. So yeah, she tried to save her family by the only way she knew how.

The scene that got me the most was when Peter was hiding in the attic from his mom as she was banging furiously on the door… with her head. Just the non-humanness of it was eerie and made me feel sick. And on top of the theme of a mother chasing her child to kill him, it’s chilling.

What really gets me every time about this film is that sense of ambiguity, the either/or of maybe supernatural-maybe psychological, and the film lets you ultimately take away whatever conclusions you come to on your own. The only other filmmaker who takes the same meticulous (and simoultaneously unhinged) approach to these ideas is David Lynch, and this is about the highest praise I can give a director. Ari's the real deal, the kind of artist that we just don't have enough of right now. (Toni Colette's performance in this film really reminds me of Sheryl Lee's in Fire Walk with Me, and once you start thinking about the thematic and visual parallels (a telephone pole--helloooo choices!) they're really hard to unsee (and I love that we actually have a boy--A Final Boy--in the role that would, in a more stereotypical film, would typically go to a female character. It's refreshing). Also, I think there's something to be explored in parallels between the Watergate era paranoia of The Exorcist and the deeply polarized politics that began in the Trump era (exactly when this film was made): something about America doesn't seem right, and the idea that your home is not even remotely safe (and neither is your own psyche) is the essence of deep, deep paranoia. Our specific paranoias almost always stem from our unique traumas, and Ari A *really* understands the very contemporary obsession with trauma.

17:03 I couldn't agree more. I was diagnosed BPD in my late early 30's. My wife has a medical card for her migraines even though it has no effect on her. One morning, she said try this. it's supposed to be an uplifting/ morning stain. One hit i was on the floor crying for 6 hrs. I have only tried medicinal twice the other time. I couldn't keep my arms from flailing. I was convinced someone was pulling my strings.

I just realized we dont know how Annies mom died she just did & either it was planned or the cult carried off the plan in her absence which could have been her idea altogether since her head was part of the sacrifice like Annies and Charlies

Well, done! I’m in agreement, this is a classic on its own. The original theatrical release of The Exorcist is one of my favorites and I think one of the greatest movies ever made. This work of art firmly raps on Reagan‘s door.

thank you SO MUCH for sticking up for Steve Graham. on my rewatch of this movie I was so distressed by how much Annie's instability, irrational behaviors, and emotional absence make a black hole of strain and attention between the three of them, and while that's understandable considering two back to back deaths in the family, Steve is still part of that family but gets zero room to emotionally respond. he's a steady rock bearing down amidst the trauma while Annie (and their son) break down multiple times and emotionally cuts herself off from her own husband. the fact that his own daughter dies and we don't see him get the same opportunities to be as affected as Annie was says a LOT about their relationship in that moment as well as Steve's attempts to hold the family together. the amount of people that I heard bash on Steve as being useless, doing nothing, etc. got really under my skin. some people forget what the fourth wall perspective means, and Steve can't possibly have the perspective the audience does, so he does what he can with what family he has left. Annie can he forgiven in her imperfections and mistakes, but Steve deserves better.

I still remember feeling pages fall off the calendar while watching this movie. I really can't understand how anybody could find it an enjoyable watching experience. Sure as a comversation piece it is interesting, for an overly-artsy indie movie festival type product but as an actual movie, it is the proof that "less is more" is an important rule, in this case less running time would have been great.

I always thought that the mother trying at least once to kill the son was because some part of her - or something acting through her - knew what was going on and wanted to stop it. Killing him would be the only sure way to keep him from being possessed by this demon - protecting both him and the world itself.

Peter was right about one thing in the movie, his mother forced Charlie to go neither him nor the kid wanted that but she made him take his sister so this one is on the mom cuz people can say oh he went to get high as if he knew the cake had nuts, she could hv ate the cake in front of him and we would get the same results, the mom was at fault for Charlie’s death outside of the cults influence ofc

Oh yeah no 100% this wasn’t the one that started the term, but I guess what I meant is that it’s what lead to the HUGE explosion of it that came after Hereditary. Like it was a turning point of sorts in popularity for the genre…. on the topic, I rewatched the witch last night and that’s easily like top 10 movies for me
