The Strangest Elevator In Italy: the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto, Genoa

Continuing the occasional Weird European Infrastructure Tour: an Italian lift that switches direction from horizontal to vertical. And honestly, until someone pointed it out to me, I could not figure out how this could possibly be done safely. In hindsight, it was kind of obvious.
(By the way, the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto is known by a few names: I went by the one that seems most commonly used online by both Italian-speaking and English-speaking folk.)

The coolest thing about Genoa's subway system is that you don't have to go down any steps. You just walk straight into the hill, and you're in the tunnel

true, but for S. Agostino station only. On the opposite the Brin station is up on an iron bridge upside the roads. The same (only) line is alltogether "underground, upground and overground"

Gosh... you think it was built only to reach the castle... ... Have you ever been there, took the elevator? That elevator prevents people living in the nearby from climbing across a hill, skipping a long walk or traffic. In a vertical city such engineering works are normal. As in Lisbon. Why no complaint about the portuguese? Haha

The castle just so happens to be at the top of this mountain. It’s mainly used for access to this part of the city in Catelletto that are more difficult to get to by bus. Europe is stunning and FULL of amazing places. I particularly love gorgeous Spain and Italy because of the very interesting and far reaching history + I can speak the languages. The best thing of it all is (was) that you could simply hop into your car and go anywhere and use your phone for free, free medical care etc. Now it really is travelling the world. Sad.

Been on this last year on a day trip to Genoa. Really fantastic, and the merger/transfer point between horizontal to vertical is amazing engineering! Worth seeking out, and the castle district at the top is fun to walk around in. Also, make sure to see the Maritime Museum....state of the art museum about the ship building history of the city. On the top floor is an area dedicated to the Italian emigrants to North and South America with immersive experiences and computer databases to see if your family went thru Genoa.

I was in Rome last year and the house I stayed in had this really cool old elevator. It had tiny little wooden doors, and all these little levers and latches and catches, and those metal retracting gates outside the doors. I spent a lot of time just going up and down in it, and felt like I was in a 1950s spy movie or something. It was all clangy and mechanical, and you could see all the pulleys and wires around it. It looked to be a few hundred years old, but it was in great condition. Really fun!

+sergio hidalgo He probably calls it that because this thing is so old... I don't understand why they don't left it with a crane tho... Especially if it's a crane with a static grabber, where the only moving parts are bolts that lock sideways motion. That ought to be much lighter than driving this thing onto a lift... On the other hand, I don't know if the suspension of the lower cart could survive being lifted, or if the lower cart would have to be separated from the capsule.

Thank you. Recently, I have had dreams where I enter a lift and it starts going up in the usual way and then travels horizontally on rails and then goes up again in another place. I had no idea that such a lift existed in real life. Strangely, in 1967, when I was eleven, I did visit Genoa. We were travelling on the Achille Lauro and it stopped there for a day. Possibly, we did go in this strange lift and I had forgotten and it was still there in my subconscious and came out fifty years later in a dream.

That is COOL! Years ago, I actually had a dream of an elevator that was capable of going horizontally, too. That was different! I guess I could call this an X-Y elevator, for you are moving in both the X and Y axes.

It is elevator as in Otis Elevator, the inventor of the first elevator that protected you if a cable broke, and Otis was 'sooooooo' North American! Good job Tom! Fascinating vid and thanks for all your work bring us these wonderful nuggets of knowledge!

Seeing it stopped before driving onto the elevator points out how important it is that it checks whether the platform is present. I wouldn't want to be in a train that drives itself into an open elevator shaft. I wonder what failsafes it has?

I just happened to come across this elevator last autumn. It was amazing! I also tried a few others and some funicilars. They were all free last year. Not sure how it is now..😊

We remind you that from 1 January 2024 the vertical systems (elevators, funiculars and rack railways) are free every day of the week without time limits for all citizens residing in the Metropolitan City of Genoa. In case of control, an identity document certifying residence in one of the municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Genoa must be shown to the verification staff.

Actually, the tower of terror isn't like that. Yes, the car attaches to separate elevators, but it's not like a train, each ride car is self propelled so they can make the ride look better and so the cars can sort themselves at the load and unload stations.

The Cannibal Rollercoaster at Lagoon (Utah) works the same way. you are strapped into the rollercoaster car, and you roll down the track normally until you get to the tower, then the bit of the track that you are on is hoisted up to the top where you then go down and around the rest of the roller coaster.
