This film had two perspectives: The mother and the foundlings ( I used this word, as orphans lose their parents due to death). The mother: wanted what she considered a better lifestyle (away from struggle, chaos, stress and poverty...anything to do with people of colour/urban). To the extent of abandoned her children. The Foundlings: attempted to find and seek answers from their birth mother and be a part of her life now, only to find that she still does not want anything to do with them, again (a hard pill to swallow, to not be wanted/acknowledged and even loved by their mother). In the end, when given a chance to choose her children and be there she still choose herself (and abandoned all of her children). This movie gets 5 stars from Me.

Thank you, @Descendant. This movie was excellent. There was a lot to unpack and the ambiguity was palpable. I see the film getting a lot of undeserved hate in comments sections or on IMDB from people who probably don't care for the ideas that it presents (just like they do with actual Monkey Paw productions). The story and acting are compelling AF, it's shot beautifully. It's telling when folks aren't specific in their criticisms. There are likely rough edges, given that the film is a first for the director and its association with Netflix, but that's not what people mean who are calling the entire film "trash." Those trolls simply don't see with white people in the film for their tastes.

No Marvin & Abigail were also blameless. They were her innocent children as well. They didn’t ask to be born. Cheryl destroyed all of her children with her lies & deception. @@gaila.9852 You said Marvin & Abigail hurt Sebastian and Mary. I disagree. It was Cheryl who hurt Sebastian and Mary. Her actions all those years prior in abandoning her first children came back to haunt her. In other words, the chickens came home to roost literally. @@ladytea697 In addition to Neve, Marvin and Abigail are to blame for what Sebastian and Mary endured. At the end of the movie, Ian has been murdered, and Neve has run off to start another life. Sebastian and Mary are left to pick up the pieces. They are the ones who Marvin and Abigail’s actions hurt the most. I have no idea why you are acting like Marvin and Abigail had no choice but to do what they did when that is not the case. Do you though.
@ladytea697
@ladytea697 Жыл бұрын
@@gaila.9852 And I have no idea why you’re letting Neve/Cheryl off the hook. Your comment doesn’t hold her accountable for anything she did including abandoning Marvin and Abigail. Were they not innocent “blameless” children when she first abandoned them??? Do you not understand that Neve/Cheryl ruined Marvin and Abigail lives and their actions were the direct result of their mother’s abandonment? Then she CHOSE to abandon her younger children again showing that woman had no heart whatsoever. She wasn’t capable of loving anyone not her first set of kids or the last set. She stuffed her purse with all her jewelry and was out lol. She could have stayed and faced the music but instead she dipped out AGAIN. At the end of the day, Marvin & Abigail only wanted a mother. Its a domino effect of events all started when Neve/Cheryl abandoned her children all those years ago. It’s unfortunate you can’t see who the real villain of the movie is and you want to blame the poor children she abandoned and destroyed.

The eldest son was very much understandably angry & resentful towards the mother while the daughter was more hopeful & open-minded to the idea of them reuniting & was deeply hurt when their mother turned them away & acted as if she didn’t know them. I think that they also wanted to be close/have a relationship with their half siblings but were also resentful & jealous of them because they felt as if she replaced them & saw how lavished they were living (the life they should’ve been living). All she gave them was a lousy $20,000 check to not only make up for her absence/abandonment of them, but also for them to go away so that she can continue to live her life with her new family like they never existed as she already has before & to repair her reputation/image for those who know her as neve while her eldest children still/will always know her as cheryl when she left them…I’m guessing that their presence was a trigger/reminder of when she was Cheryl.

I could understand the hurt and the resentful, hard not too if I were the kids shoes. Things could have ended differently, but she made a huge mistake by buying them off with the $20K. That made things worse than it already is.
