It was a violent crime that shook a quiet Canadian town: Mysterious intruders break into the home of Vietnamese immigrants, terrorize the family, and leave a traumatized daughter as the only witness. Neighbors and friends describe the family as hospitable, generous, and hard-working - how could they be targets? This feature-length documentary from director Jenny Popplewell (American Murder: The Family Next Door) uses police interrogation footage and testimony from those involved to unravel a web of complexities that no one saw coming.

@@parisandhu552I’m saying like, I found it a little weird when she was yelling at her dad as soon as he started suddenly yelling. you’d think if she truly was in shock she’d be crying *with* him, if you know what i’m getting at. but no, it felt more like when you’re speaking over someone to shush them. she wasn’t listening to anything he was saying. he cried but she didn’t try to hear what he was saying. she right away went “i’m okay dad”, as if she had heard him checking on her, but he didn’t even do that 😭 and there’s no way she listened enough for her to know that💀 either way: guilty, guilty, guilty.

Terrible documentary with a distinct bias and completely overlooked the psychological abuse by the parents. Many children of Asian parents can empathise with Jennifer, whereas the rest of the population can be easily manipulated by curated Netflix shows to make her a one-dimensional villain. The only good thing that can come from this case is examining this type of abuse and how prevalent it is, but of course that isn't what's happening...

Sad that S3 of Mindhunter got cancelled cause they wanted to force producers to make it 'more appealing'' to a wider audience otherwise the budget 'is too high' for what it is, but still glad they refused to take the core component away and they rather wanted it cancelled then butchered. I live in markham, close to where she lived. It's kinda messed cus a few years later, another kid from markham in the same neighbourhood slaughtered his entire family (mom, grandma, sister & father) simply because he had been lying about going to college when he wasn't the day before his "graduation" instead of expose the truth he killed them all and shared the pics on his computer game. Concerned players called the police. But yea She's so stupid. This is one of the safest , suburban areas. Home invasions are kinda common but they almost never have violence, nevermind a DOUBLE murder!!? Especially when the homeowners just ur average middle aged couple!! She really thought she could pass off something like that so casually, and just be home the entire time too. Plus, she was naive to willingly talk so much to the police. She talked way too much & got her story twisted up.

I wish they tell what’s not told in other documentaries in KZfaq.. such as her life when she was young, how her relationship was with her parents before meeting the boyfriend.. and what actually cause her to deceive her parents for so many years.. these are crucial points of why she snapped.. I just don’t know why that I have this feeling that her dad filing a no contact restraining order on her after she’s released kinda shows that his dad is really a hard cold calculating person and not reflecting on his actions in her childhood that might have also cause her to snap

As someone who had parents with great expectations that broke me in the end. I ended up saving money and flying across the world to be away from them. Cause when I had a ‘mental breakdown’ my parents didn’t believe me and told me to stop being ‘childish’ We only reconnected 3yrs ago and I can say that, now they are proud of me, they tell me often… I believe 13yrs of no contact from me and no doubt the discussions they had with my sister helped 😅 Also, I realised that they wanted what was best for me, that they didn’t know any better. As my dad said ‘we pushed our wants and dreams onto you and being dismissive at how unhappy you were’ They are proud, Even if I’m just a Vet 😂

Like the young man said, Caribbean and Asian parents can make or break their children. In this case, she was already broken and disassociated. She needs psychiatric counseling while incarcerated as well. . Having to live life through controlling parents and being told what to do and how to be as well as not being loved for who you are takes a toll on a young mind. . People continue to develop until the age of 25. Then she stayed in the environment that made her mind sick. The arrested development in her is VERY clear. I am sure if she was caucasian Canadian her sentence would not have been that strict and their would have been more understanding of her childish mind and the emotional and mental abuse by her father with her mother doing nothing. . I completely understand not wanting your daughter to date a criminal drug dealing user, but they did not parent right in any other aspect either. . She was a people pleaser. She called it off and when the guy (Wong) got upset, she let him go ahead with the plans. . She even asked the investigator “what do you want me to say?” She will not find freedom until she’s out of survival mode. She stayed in the environment instead of leaving at 18. Her confidence was nothing. . It’s sad and I’m not condoning what she did, but the history of her life pieces together how this can happen. . As someone brutally abused mentally, physically, and psychologically by my stepmother from age 8 to 18, and also emotionally and mentally abused by my father, I understand not wanting to be around her parents and the sad thought of wanting them to disappear. I didn’t have the thought to hurt them back, but I understand. . She didn’t “choose” Daniel, this woman was mentally warped from birth, childhood, and adolescence. For those that do not understand trauma or trauma informed or not raised by caring Asian or Caribbean parents, it’s not easy to understand or have empathy for this woman. I do (all while still not condoning what she did, but I understand how she got there.)

So, basically she’s not responsible for anything, not even the man she chose to be with (who did not want her btw). Girl, you’re grown, you can’t blame your parents forever. Jennifer and you need to take responsibility for your actions. She knew what she did was wrong, which is why she went to great lengths to hide it, there was nothing wrong with her mentally that would interfere with her understanding of the moral implications of her actions. Being told no isn’t mental or emotional abuse, please get it together.

@@dannyp4017 Thank you for responding kindly. . I agree. I have had a life of trauma (age 8 to 18, 26, and 31) and understand the impact of being in survival mode. In those interviews, she doesn't look or act her age - as if she's stuck as a 15 year old being controlled and whatever else she was enduring. Even though the ex was not reciprocating feelings, that was the last time (it seemed) that she felt belonging and maybe received affection (Asian and Caribbean parents can be cold an unaffectionate - not all of them, though.) But seems as though she lacked a 'dad's' love and affection. Not a father, but a Dad. It's clear by the way he cut her off as well because most families that have had a member commit a heinous crime, forgive them and keep contact, maybe not all family members, but at least a few remain in contact, but she was completely cut from her father. I don't think those ties can be recovered anyway. . I also hope she finds some resolve and impact of her actions as well. Prison is not always the place for real rehabilitation, but she's there for life so hopefully they will have some psychiatric help for her as well...something isn't right with her.
