The Submarine That Almost Sparked WW3

Dark Seas

Күн бұрын

The Barents Sea was peaceful and quiet. The midnight waters appeared undisturbed. Under the cloak of darkness, HMS Conqueror, one of the Royal Navy's Churchill-class nuclear submarines featuring unlimited range and a devastating arsenal of state-of-the-art torpedoes, slowly glided through the icy depths in search of her objective.
The sophisticated sensors, sonar, and radar systems gave the crew the latest information about their surroundings. Everyone was quiet in the dimly lit control room until the submarine made contact with two Soviet ships.
It was time to execute Operation Barmaid, an operation the Royal Navy and the US Navy had been planning since the summer of 1982-the target: a top-secret Soviet sonar array.
The crew knew that success could give NATO a critical advantage in submarine warfare, but failure could escalate tensions to the brink of conflict, a risk they were willing to take for the greater good.
As HMS Conqueror positioned herself beneath the unsuspecting Soviet vessel, the commander gave the order. With precision and stealth, Conqueror’s pair of remote-controlled heavy steel cutting-edge blades began cutting the Soviet sonar array.
The crew was committed but nervous. A single wrong moment could prove fatal. If the Soviets detected them, Conqueror was doomed, and Britain and NATO would face war against the might of the USSR.

A bit ironic that the Belgrano formerly USS Phoenix survived Pearl harbour during ww2 without taking any damage. Gained a reputation as the luckiest ship in the US navy. Got sold after the war to Argentina and got sunk then they pissed off the UK. Rule of thumb... If you want to eat snails, visit France. If you want to make Pizza, visit Italy. If you want good quality technology, visit Germany. If you want good long life aircraft, visit US. If you want something sunk that once was afloat. Visit the UK.

In the 80's I worked at the legendary Toronto Iron Works that made the plate steel shells of these towed array sonar buoys. Designed in 2 pieces they were shaped somewhat like a sardine about assembled into a 6 ft x 2.5ft x 1.5 ft high pod with finned edges designed to create minimal turbulence when towed. As "hightech" as the system sounds it was actually made in a blacksmith shop using an open coke forge, custom "hand made" jigs/forms and old fashioned C Presses.

Conqueror was specifically chosen for this mission as it was one of, if not the most stealthy nuclear sub in service at the time among NATO members. Other subs may have been detected by the tower sonar array spoiling the mission. There is also the case that if they did not steal the sonar cable the NATO forces could not know for certain if their subs were capable of being detected by similar systems and develop countermeasures to defeat them.

@@Highendaudio1 Oh I'm the one who knows nothing about this topic am I ???. I talked to a member of the original Conqueror crew who works at Devonport navel base UK as part of the museum staff for HMS Courageous. Courageous being the sister sub to Conqueror who is preserved as a museum and open only to exclusive tours. A significant proportion of the interior of Conqueror was swapped taken from the sub to replace the parts of Courageous that had already been scrapped before the decision was made to preserve Courageous as a museum ship. I have been aboard the sub in question (Courageous) So I can all but guarantee I know more about this than you do. The system being used that conqueror captured was a modified towed sonar array. A system that is literally towed under and behind the surface ship and listens for the unnatural sounds of submarines to detect them. Conqueror was chosen for this mission as she had proved her stealth capabilities previously. There were other factors that went into the decision but this was the overriding reason. The crew member I met said as much while onboard for the tour. Courageous is inside Devonport navel base. An active Military base where all of the UK retired subs are kept from the Churchill class to the Trafalgar class. Just to go on the tour I had to book a month in advance for background checks and ID confirmation. I had to bring a passport with me on the day. So I can't imagine your knowledge on this topic could be any more credible than direct sources that I know.

Belgrano's CPT confirmed that he had been given orders to enter the exclusion zone and target British vessels, the Argentine admiralty of course denied it. The UK sub shadowed her until she was in view of the zone before engaging... she was also on a direct course to enter the zone. The captain also stated... "They were right and I would of engaged if i was in their position". He showed more moral and leadership than his leadership who foolishly also thought the UK would abandon it's own civilians to a invasion.

Do you know what submarine prevented WW3? During the US Naval blockade of Cuban waters during “The Cuban Missile Crisis”, US destroyers depth charged a Soviet submarine to force it to surface. Unbeknownst to US Intelligence, Soviet submarines were equipped with Nuclear tipped torpedoes. The Soviet submarine refused to fire those torpedoes. When he and his crew returned to his Russian base, the other submarine crews refused to applaud them as was the custom to applaud them upon their return. They were considered as Cowards. Also at that time, unknown to the Kremlin, Soviet commanders had the power to fire nuclear missiles into Florida, New York and Washington, DC. With that, WW3 could have easily been started.

A good video but the video footage of submarine type does not sync with the dialog and voice over. In one cut you see a resolution class SSBN whilst the dialog continues to talk about conqueror. At 1 min.24 you see a resolution class SSBN, the hull profile and fin (conning tower) is a different shape. At 4 min 16 you see a polaris missile fired with the caption underneath of a harpoon missile. Again your footage show a SSBN, HMS Resolution Class at 4 min 50, there is a rating holding the plaque of Resolution while your voice over is talking about when conqueror or the first churchill class was launched. You need to re-edit your video. I don't doubt that this story is probably true, but please make sure all of your video clips match the dialog and get rid of the music it doesn't work, sorry. My late father was a submariner and commanding officer during the cold war, so I know a thing or two about class types!

Ex US General Haig, then US Secretary of State, had been told by Thatcher in late 1981 that she would not be seen negotiating with Argentina in 1982 but was happy to give the Falklands away later. Haig told the Argentinians to be patient, just wait and you can have them. The Junta were impatient and thought IF she is happy to hand them over later "lets take them now and show how strong we are". That is why Haig reacted to the Invasion with dread. Haig offered the RN a USN Aircraft Carrier and any other ships that the UK wanted. The US provided access to their satellite system via HMS Bristol, the only Type 82 Destroyer. The vessel you refer to announced to be withdrawn was A171 HMS Endurance which was an Antarctic Research Vessel. According to the Captain of the Belgrano, the sinking was 100% legitimate. The ONLY LINK between the Falklands, NOT THE SUBJECT OF THIS, and this FASCINATING STORY is that it was the same Submarine. However you seem to know very little about the Falklands War at all.
