Wine Trade with the people of Central Europe, acctually was a big source of revenue, for meditterranian Merchants throuout the antiquity ( and especially during the Greek expansion).. The Greek city of massilia (modern Marseille) grew rich and prosperous becuz of it.. It is entriely possible that the suebi restricted the Import of wine into their territory, but most likely this happened either for economical reasons (to prevent the loss of wealth in form of silver that was used to pay the wine), or for security reasons, (roman Merchants had a notorious reputation to serve as spys ).. the Eplenation Tacitus gives us, should be looked at critically.. Since he wrote his book during the time of the early Imperium.. During the late Republic women had gained more and more freedom, economical power & and even political influence in Rome.. (as we can even see by the naming of "colonia Aggripina" modern Cologne after an influential aristocratic woman of the time).. The first "Emperor" Gaius Iulius Caesar Augustus commonly known as Augustus or Oktavian set out to change this. In his opinion the rising influence of women was bad for Rome. And he passed a series of Marriage Laws.. This Laws punished Adultery (of the woman) heavily, and even encouraged denunciation of adultery.. He even went as far to banish his own daughter to an island, because she was not complying to his new moral standards among other things. So if Tacitus tells us about the Barbarians that are practicing a "cult" of hypermaskulinity and punish adultery severely, whilst living in a perfect Patriarchial Society.. He most likely just writes this to give his fellow Romans an example on how to live "properly".. It is quite possible that among the northern Tribes at the time women had far more influence than in Rome itself, e.g. a little bit later, the British Tribes (similar to the suebi in culture) united behind the wive of a killed Clan leader, ( her name was Boudicca) and started one of the bloodiest Rebellions against Roman rule we know.. Edit: Massilia remained a Regional Power house, with a high level of self Government inside the Roman Republic... Sadly it sided with the Wrong Side in the Civil Wars , so in the Empire it's Status was lowered..

But your assumption is not only wrong it's realy fucked up.. nastily racisst & all that stuff.. let me say just one thing.. modern far rights like to compare themselfes to ancient germanic and nordic tribes.. But the truth is: They have nothing in common. Modern far rights are simmilar to the late antique Roman Nationalists who killed the Magister Militum Stillicho.. Do you know what happened because of them? ROME BURNED (Anno 410)

@@J-IFWBR So, you're an apologetic for the long-standing anti-Jewish sentiment prevalent in the German peoples. I get it. It hurts to see that the politics of the National Socialists were a deep-rooted cultural expression that lay within Germans for thousands of years. Unfortunately, they are expressed in history, so they can't be denied. After the 2nd Crusade was preached in 1144, Bernard of Clairvaux had to go to Germany to stop pogroms against Jews by Germans. Martin Luther had really nasty words against Jews. The German crimes against Jews are their inherited "original sin".
@J-IFWBR
@J-IFWBR 4 жыл бұрын
@@Zajuts149 hmm, first of all thx for the reply =).. I guess we have a missunderstanding.. Let me explain... Upon seeing your comment i thought you were a german far right nationalist, trying to legitimize anti jewish prejudices.. Probably based on your reply i was assuming this wrongly.. So i appologize.. I will explain why i thought this.. 1. You identified the Suebi with Germany & modern Germans.. 2. You connected Judaism to usury. (if i missunderstood you in this two points as well im sorry once more =D) In Germany this usually are Positions taken by Nationalisozialists. I think both positions are problematic let me explain why: 1. The Term Germania was established by the Romans for the Territory/ Tribes East of the Rhine. Unfortunately the English language uses the "same" Term (Germany/s) for modern day Germany and its people.. In modern Germany we call ourselfes "deutsch" and the country: "Deutschland" older writings used a T (Teutsche = Germans (english)). As the Western Roman Empire declined, many Tribes from Germania started to settle into the Empire. Some were called to help by Rome. Some entered violently. Many switched sides between beeing foederati and enemy frequently. Many modern European countries started this way. e.g. France is named after the Germanic tribe of the Franks. England is named after the Angelns & Saxons therefor the Term anglosaxon. Regions like lombardi in Italy and Burgundy in France are named after Germanic Tribes and the Kingdoms they founded (Burgundians & Lombards)... So all these Countrys are partially "Germanic" the Germanic influence how ever is only one part of these Countrys. An other part is roman e.g. in France even the language is a romanic-language closely linked to Latin.. in England and Deutschland the language is less roman but still has many words of Latin origin.. Our Law is mainly Roman. etc. You may now say: "yah England and France are on the Territory of the Roman Empire, but Deutschland is not. wherefor it is not Romanized like the others and it's mainly Germanic".. But thats not true either.. Parts of Deutschland were in fact Roman Provinces (Germania superior & inferior), even one of the four Roman Capitals Trier is located in Deutschland. So where did "Deutschland" start? Ironicaly with the Frankish Kingdom.. Charlemagne who was of Germanic descent, was crowned Roman Emperor.. And in the Name of Christianity he brutally subjugated the still Pagan Saxons in nowadays Germany. He christinised them and therefor Romanised them, since the language of the Church in the West was Latin. And Christianity was the official Roman Religion in the late Roman Empire. He also integrated the other Tribes of the area into his realm e.g. the Thuringians & Bavarians. After his death the Realm was devided. A power strugel began and ultimately two Parts emerged a western part that went on to become France ruled by kings. And the Easternpart, the East was the beginning of modern Germany/ Deutschland. Otto I. crowned himself Kaiser aller (of all) Deutschen (deutsch originally meaning the people). Kaiser is translated Emperor & it derives from the Roman: Caesar, Caesar = Kaiser. The State he started building was called "The Holy Roman Empire" so you can see Germany was pretty Romanized. Resumée: modern Germany is as closely linked to the ancient Germanic Tribes that existet around 10 or 25 CE, as all the other major Western European Countries.. To draw a direct line from the Suebi of Tacitus straight to modern Germany is not realy possible.. Only with Napoleon and the rise of Nationalism he produced among Germans, people in Germany begann to look for a different tale of identity, and they resorted back to the ancient Germanic tribes, based on Tacitus's Romantisised Picture of the Ancient Germanics they build this idea of the supreme Strong independent, savage German etc. The prussians, and later the Nazis liked this narrativ very much and they did their part to popularize it.. Nowadays Germany sees itself as an Europen Nation with the Roman, Christian & Germanic, Roots it has. And only Far Right Nationalists still believe in this direct descent from ancient Germanic, idependent, isolated culture bullshit anymore.. 2. The Prejudice of usury beeing somehow directly linked to Judaism, is realy just a prejudice. Neither the Thora nor the Talmund to my knowledge say jah you should practice usury.. Sadly the origin of this prejudice actually is discrimination. Descrimination against Jews in Christian Europe and especially in Germany during the Medival times. For Jews were forbidden to work regular professions they had to resort to beeing merchants & lending money to survive. This were very very unhonorable professions at the time. Final words: I never ment to search for appologies for all the terrible things that happened during recent and older German history. And you are perfectly right if u say that mass murder and discrimination against jewish population is well documented throuout German history. But to know about this is not unfortunate!! It's good to know this, for hopefully we can not let it happen again. Nonetheless i don't think this is part of the "GERMAN-DNA" or something like this. But sadly many prejudical texts have been written, and a word once memorized is not easy forgotten. Germans aren't special because their history is especially terrible in regards to the named things. To think this, would be hybris in my opinion. Discrimination and Genocide is not a specifically German thing btw. The bigger Problem behind this is in humans. We like to put things and People in Boxes. We like to divide into us and them. To divide into the familiar and the other. We like to value & devalue things & people. If we don't face this, we haven't learned anything. Congrats: If you red my entire Comment: wow =D, hope you liked it. Manythings i said might be contoversial, or inaccurate. Pls correct me and/or share your own opinion if you feel like it. After all im not an expert. Cheers m8 =)

They think that male names of the Cherusci are related to the modern Deutsche Zieg meaning victory/victorious. This might be the root of Sigmund, meaning the hand of victory. The idea is that the fire wyrm is a column of troops passing through the woods. The fire is the torches they carry while the scales are shields and armour of the troops. It might be a folk memory of the battle of Tuetobourg led by the Cherusci where they ambushed a column of three legions.
