The Sunplash Trail, trip Perth through Geraldton, Carnarvon & Wittenoom Australia 1950s 1960 F885

A short film sponsored by the Western Australian Government Tourist Development Authority from about 1960 I guess. It shows the sights on the Sunsplash trail which amounts to a trip from Perth to Wittenoom through Carnavon and a host of other towns. At the time asbestos mining was a big thing at Wittenoom, and the town certainly looked lively at the time though I believe asbestos mining ceased in 1966 (which helps date the film).

But felt it warranted a better digital capture and a little editing mainly to deal with some sound problems, because the colour and filming is so nice.

Thanks for the time and trouble taken. As I mentioned in your previous version's comments section, my recall is that Bryan Lobascher filmed this and another B/W documentary for Channel 7 in 1960 before the flood and cyclone that year.

Nothing says holiday quite like visiting a whaling station and a town that is so deadly that the WA government wants it wiped off of all maps so people stop visiting. Ah yes, the good old days.

well... ive lived in whittenoom for most of my life and i am in my late 40s and i'm not dead. nor are many others who still reside here. i can assure you if you come to whittenoom you will be treated with respect, not derision.
