Just want to add that Mario and Luigi living with their family isn’t too weird if you’re an ethnic minority/ from a recent immigrant family. I’m 2nd Gen Mexican American and it’s normal to stay with the family unit until you marry. There’s a lot of pressure to stick around and help the family out still until you start a family of your own.

We have got to stop casting actors to play voice roles just cause we know who they are. Cast VOICE ACTORS to play voice roles. A few actors with iconic voice characteristics, like jack black and Seth, is fine but like how they mentioned Anya Taylor joy, Keegan and Fred armisen don’t work it’s because they aren’t voice actors and should have been played by actual voice actors.

If the movie had like shrek humour it would be a 10/10. In my opinion the comedy didn’t land it felt too much just fro kids instead of a FAMILY family. I would like Mario and toads dynamic to be more like shrek and donkey

Jack Black as Bowser and Seth Rogen as DK were excellent casting! Bowser was my favorite part of the movie! And I loved Princess Peach being portrayed as a baddie instead of a damsel! I’m excited to see what the future of the franchise holds!

I went with my little brother who’s 13 years younger than me & I found myself laughing just as much as he was 😂😭 also the animation of the toads and blue penguins were adorable!!!

Here's my thing about Chris Pratt, I know there's been rumors and such of his involvement with Hillsong (a crazy anti-lgbtq church) and honestly, it doesn't matter because he gives me the same sort of vibes as Tom Cruise - and they aren't good. I know that fellow actors and directors have commented about both of these individuals, saying they are professionals and a delight to work with. And that's great. Everyone should be professional and polite to their coworkers. Duh. That doesn't mean you aren't a dumpster of a human to everyone else in the world. Is it entitlement? Naracissim? I don't know but it's just a bad vibe check and I don't want to support those kind of "golden gooses" in hollywood. It's a shame because Jack Black can take ALL my money. There's someone who 1000% passes the vibe check lmao! I'm so happy (and not surprised) to hear you all thought he was the best part of the movie too. It's wonderful to see him continue to be such a delightful person, a fierce supporter of the queer community, and have the almost effortless ability to bring a smile to my face. King!

One of the few things I felt were missing was definitely when they fell off the road into the water. I was waiting for the cloud guy to come by and pick up Mario and DK and have it just be a super slow scene of him having to lift them back up onto the road! I was a little butthurt they just went under instead 😂 I feel like the second movie is going to end up being about them finding Yoshi and somehow ending up in Sarasaland to introduce the last 3 characters.

My favourite part of the movie was Seth Rogan as DK, his voice and his laugh. It's perfect

Peach has agency and is girl bossy in Super Mario RPG. It's one of the reasons that one's my favorite game. Also she just slapped all the enemies. Birdo is actually canonically trans. It was mentioned in one manual like Super Mario Bros 2 that said she's a male "who thinks he's a girl" and then they just don't talk about it ever again. Birdo's Japanese name is also just Catherine. Also, I love Yoshi too and even got the wristband for Marioland in USJ, but like Yoshi was introduced as a dispensible horse. It makes me sad, but there are levels where the way you get through mechanics by ditching him to jump across a chasm.

Ngl I’m sad to see the word cringe associated with this movie, but after getting about 5 minutes in I understand where they’re both coming from (even though I agree with Kelsey slightly more). The Mario games at their core are VERY simple story wise, and we have to also remember that Nintendo is extremely protective of their properties after seeing what the previous Mario movie turned out to be. The only way the company was ever going to consider trying to make another one is if they had heavy involvement from beginning to end, which means a very simple story that pays tribute to the games that’s unlike the 90s movie that did the complete opposite. Honestly it’s kinda disappointing some people expected a complex plot for something like this cause at least for me I don’t need a complex story for something like this cause as a Mario fan, I really loved the versions of these characters the movie gave us and there’s so many references sprinkled throughout that had me smiling so much. Straightforward movies that don’t go 90 mins are a rarity even in family stuff nowadays, and imo I think it’s really cool that Nintendo and Illumination wanted to make something that was just a nice time for people of all ages to enjoy much like the games it’s based on

I'm surprised they didn't bring up the Pratt voice do-over theory. When I watched the movie, Pratt was GREAT as Mario in the beginning and I was impressed, but around a quarter into the movie, his voice became more bland. I thought I was going crazy but I saw other people on twitter saying the same. Going theory is that there was such backlash about Pratt's voice lines in the trailer, they brought him back into the studio to re-record several lines. That's most likely why the "Mushroom Kingdom Here we go" and a lot of Mario's lines from the trailer were cut out from the movie.

Here’s my take on the whole family movie vs kid’s movie thing. I think this is a family movie in that it does appeal to viewers of all ages, but it does so in the opposite way that movies usually do. The standard model is to have a visually fun style that appeals more to children, and a plot and emotional throughline that appeals more to adults. Here, the aesthetics and design were what appeals to older audiences, while the simple and easy to digest plot is catered more towards the younger audiences. So in that regard, Zach is correct that the movie lacks what he expects from a family movie, while Kelsie is correct that it absolutely does appeal to a broad audience.

1000000% disagree with Zach. It's completely an adult movie. The movie was chock full of references and thats for nostalgia for adults who grew up.playing Mario games in the 90s and 00s.

I actually found Peach really dull lol. I don't really like the trope of trying to avoid damsel in distress by making the only female character in a cast overly competent and without any flaws or depth or allowed to be funny. It kind of reminds me of the lazy writing of the 90s sitcom where the wife is allowed to be competent but boring and the husband is funny but stupid and is the star of the show.

I’m so glad you guys did this one! I took my 4 year old son to this movie, and he’s just been getting into playing video games with me so he recognized a ton of the characters. We had a great time and he brings up the movie all the time now 💜 looking forward to the new MCU lol

This is 100% a kids movie. The simplicity of the plot and mach 5 pacing of the plot are proof of that. And that mamma mia joke 20 times. They did make it at least tolerable for the parents and older mario fans by providing music and game references.

As a fan of Mario, I wish the plot was better. I was so excited when they dropped the info about it coming 4/20/22. It was cute but I wish it just had more to it, like Zack.

I agree a lot more with Keysey on this one. I knew all the references but it definitely felt like a family movie in comparison to Sonic that did feel more of a kids movie. I thought I would need to give it the same leway like Sonic, but it really didn't feel like I had to rate it based on that expectation. I loved it so much. Definitely a pleasure.

I agree with Zack that the random iconic songs were really weird and threw me off as a Nintendo lover. The score itself is absolutely fantastic, and they put in the DK rap which is so terrible but I love it so much!

I think the fact that I went into watching this film with really no expectations at all besides knowing about the whole Chris Pratt thing made this movie an absolute joy to me. It was fun and it took twists that I wasn’t expecting. The references are so nostalgic and fun and just bring such a delight to the people who grew up playing the games. I love a Pixar level film don’t get me wrong, they are my bread and butter. But the thing that I really adored about this film is that it’s just trying to be a movie. I’m not going to see a Mario movie to feel some big huge emotions, and it’s not like it lacked emotional depth and a solid story, it just wasn’t at Pixar level. But I think that’s what made it just absolutely enjoyable. Some movies are just meant to be feel good films and I look forward to seeing this again.

I ain’t no critic, but I totally agree with Zak. This movie was written about as lazy as you could possibly write a movie, they really didn’t enter tomorrow, and Easter eggs in a way that progressed the plot and made sense, in the whole world they built, just felt pretty careless

I feel like Genesis Rodriguez could do a realllyyyy good Peach. The only live action stuff I’ve seen her in is the Umbrella Academy, but she has voice acting experience as Honey Lemon in Big Hero 6 and Perfuma in She-ra Princess of Power.

i genuinely enjoyed this movie, HOWEVER i think the weakest part of this movie was Luigi's storyline and the relationship between him and Mario. I don't think Mario is a good brother to Luigi. Since Mario is the one protecting Luigi from everything, Luigi has no opportunity to learn how to stand up for himself and be his own person with confidence. This has turned him into a character with his own agency. His only purpose is to be motivation for Mario. Besides the ending, which felt sort of out of the blue since he had no resolve to do any protecting before at all, Luigi spent the whole movie sitting around waiting for Mario to save him. I feel the writers forgot about the "brothers" aspect of the story and shoehorned it into the end. If Luigi wasn't Mario's brother and instead a love interest, esp a female one, people would be livid over his characterization as essentially the movie's token "damsel in distress"
