I'm Canadian, and even I have heard of the antics of the leadership in Florida, their completely criminal mismanagement of covid precautions and now, their anti LGBTQ legislation.

@@samurphy I've lived in Florida my whole life. We made it through COVID much better than other states and there is no anti LGBTQ legislation. We have a law that prevents teachers from talking to third graders about things like transgenderism without their parent's knowledge. Third graders. Do you really want a teacher talking to your seven year old child about transgender surgery without your knowledge? Our Governor looks out for us as Floridians and kept our economy strong during Covid. No one ever said you could not wear a mask, only that the government may not require it of you. When other states labeled their police as villains Governor Desantis gave ours a bonus. Our housing market is booming with folks moving to our State. The media has tried to smear our Governor but it's just not true.

What's that all about, you ask? Unnecessary injection of current politics into a retrospective piece about an entertainment show from the 80's. This is Dan's show, and he's of course free to do with it as he chooses. I'll staunchly defend that. But, as someone who finds good and bad things in both parties, and in DeSantis, it just took me right out of the moment. Suddenly I was asking myself things like: To the extent that I agree with DeSantis' policies, would the writer and host of the show I'm watching consider me to be sentient slime? Could we disagree and yet be cordial and respectful, or would he despise me because of differences in political philosophy? For me, when I'm watching content about entertainment properties, perhaps particularly ones from my childhood, I don't want to be forced to think about such things via low-hanging-fruit, out-of-nowhere, not-relevant-to-the-topic-at-hand, zingers.

And "Ironic"ly the theme of one of her handful of episodes was "pop stars".

I had grown out of watching the show by the time Alanis was on, so I never got to see any of her episodes.

Kind of how I felt about Round the Twist. Nobody I knew could remember that show, then I found it again online a few years back. I am not quite convinced it isn't still a fever dream.

My dad was the same way. Nickelodeon was something I watched weekends with my mom.

My parents split when was 2 years old, and thankfully my mother eventually got cable at her place when I turned 5 years old in 86, and eventually my own 13in TV in my bedroom so I binged a lot of cable TV growing up when I was at her place being able to watch just about anything short of adult content. My dad just could not get cable ran to his house no matter what as he was outside of the town limits, and the local cable company refused to run it, plus a big C-Band sat dish was just way too expensive, and so when I was at his place, it was rabbit ears only till 95 when he got his first DirecTV setup, and it was a self install deal taking us a weekend to install having to cut down a few pine trees in the backyard for line of sight, and the wait for the concreted pole for the dish to dry, even after all of that it only allowed for viewing on a single TV, so I was stuck watching what him, or my stepmom wanted to watch if they were home, and using the living room TV. My grandparents did not get cable because of cost till the early 2000's, so when I stayed at their place it was rabbit ears only as well, but at least we could pick up WTBS from Atlanta with the powered roof antenna with a rotator for WCW Saturday Night Wrestling, and some old school cartoons, so I kind of felt your pain growing up as well to some degrees.

We were dirt poor begged my Mom for cable just for YCDTOTV on Nick and MTV of course. Got it for a whole summer in 3rd grade it was one of the best summers ever!

We lived in the middle of nowhere. We didn't get cable at our house until I was 15. I missed a lot. I begged for a satellite dish, but that was back when dishes were about as big as a car.

Who would have thought that a small child from Western Canada who was a fan of a show that was produced thousands of miles away would later in life be located less than 100 yards away from their office that cuts me paychecks. I'm thinking Dan meant that she wasn't a well known entertainer at the time, so the show hadn't banked on her future star status?

It's common knowledge that Alanis was on the show in Canada when Jagged Little Pill was released since it was highly touted as modest trivia at the time. I had a bit of a crush on her growing up since she had the prettiest eyes.

What I like is that it reminded me of how me and my friends/sibling would play back in the 80s. The jokes and subject matter were often relatable to me when I watched this regularly in 1986.

Kids in the 80's understood concepts of communication that are lost on kids today. Hell, some GROWNUPS don't understand them. Nuance, timing, context, intent, euphemism, sarcasm, irony.....IRONY!!! The woman who single handedly caused most of the western world to misunderstand the concept of irony was once on a show that used irony in many bits!! (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻
