Batman And Superman Battle Of The Super Sons was a DC Comics animated film that flew largely under the radar. In it the sons of the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel must take on Starro. Jon Kent and Damian Wayne find themselves on a surprisingly dark (at times) adventure. From having to take on the likes of the Teen Titans, and Martian manhunter and green arrow; to seeking to escape Krypto at the Fortress of Solitude. This movie largely flew under the radar, and feels like it came and went, but how was it? Find out/let's discuss here on Casually Comics!

Does this movie take place before they turned John Kent into a homosexual because that's the only way I'll watch it because I can't take the character serious after they done that to him and I have nothing against gays it's just they did that just to pander to people and it's just a joke they should have never done that it's one of the reasons I haven't been buying modern comics the last year or two because of all this left-wing nonsense but I love your channel Sasha You're absolutely beautiful on top of all of that I'd marry you if you wasn't already married lol

There's a chance they could de-age John by it's implied that they don't really know for sure what went on when he got aged up I'm thinking that maybe this isn't even actually John that this is John from a different Earth like maybe he's ultraman's son from the new 52 when Superwoman was pregnant I'm thinking maybe that's him here and that the real John from the super sons is still out there somewhere and he's not a homosexual and it's this version of John that's a homosexual That's how you undo it without offending the alleged gay comic book fans that are so offended by everything but yet I've yet to meet one lol

The "Bateverything" is a Robin thing. Dick started it after Batman showed him the bat cave the first time and every Robin since has continued the tradition. I think Batman does it now just to beat them to the punch...

So happy to see someone mention this fact, it's honestly so sweet. Especially knowing that they voiced two characters that despise one another (Roy Mustang and Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist), but when you see Avengers Assemble you can see and feel the chemistry they have together whenever Natasha had somewhat of a moment with Thor.

If he were much more genre-savvy, the creepy silent'y walking down a dark hallway would have been obvious but I do like him testing his mom. Reminds me of Terminator 2 where the T-800 tested John's(lol) foster parents who were already killed and impersonated by the T-1000.

The best writing of Damien is in the Wayne family adventures. I love how they show his struggle to relate to regular people and even the rest of the bat family without making you hate him.

As much as I love WFA, I think he comes across as too soft. He just comes across as a regular kid with social issues. The thing that weirds me out the most is how often he's willing to give full bright smiles. Even in his more personable incarnations, it was pretty rare. Although it is infinitely preferable to when they swing the opposite way and make him a totally unlikable brat, which is annoyingly common.
@thomaswood8405
@thomaswood8405 Жыл бұрын
@Will N To me it's just a step too far. It comes across less as a lighter take on Damian, and more of another character entirely. At the beginning, Damian was still softer than most canons, but noticeably reticent and standoff-ish in a way that made him feel distinct. Now he feels just like any other child character.

I remember when I saw they were "aging up" Jon Kent I groaned (perhaps even audibly). Young characters skipping their youth is a comics trope I've grown quite unhappy with. Illyana Nikolaievna Rasputina (aka Magik) for example. Now there's a subject I'd like to see more on, comics kids who've been "Aged-up." As always thank you so very much for the videos.

Yeah, I wanted the middle school years of the Super Sons. Preferably with the other legacy kids that have been killed off or disappeared during reboots. How many kids get aged up, how many don't get to stick around, and who are the lucky ones that get to live their life?

I REALLY enjoyed this movie when I watched it the other day. And maybe the toon-shaded cgi look was a lil weird at first (as was Damian's tall hair) but I got used to it and really liked the way most of the characters looked. And also it was a FUN film through and through. It's a total treat for those of us who miss the Super-Sons comic. :)

Fun movie and terrific review. DC had a great thing with Jon and Damian as the newest iteration of the Super Sons. Then, they torpedoed it by the ridiculous aging up of Jon. Maybe with the restored multiverse, there's still a world where we can see these two the way they were before.

Every couple years DC and Marvel do this. The make and take bunch of new characters and inflate them to MVP, Superstardom. And then In a few years, they forget about them, and they're either killed off or forgotten. And considering Jonathan kent, Superman has nowhere else to go, and all his development skipped over and rushed to make him his dad's equal (except not). I can't see him doing much more after Tom taylor's done with him.

I was a kid in the 70's, and i always loved the Super Sons, even tho they weren't around long. In later decades, I wondered if it weren't just a dream, but I think I even had a coloring book with them in it. It's cool to see them get revamped every now and then. And I think discovering Dad's outfit and writing it off as cosplay works much better than thinking it's roleplay. (ewww!)

I dropped out of regularly reading comics around the time Leviathan Rising started. I was one of the fans who were not happy about the decision to age up Jon, and am honestly kind of surprised they haven't de-aged him. I was expecting that to happen as soon as a new writer got on the book. I have not read his solo series, so I can't comment on its quality or depiction of him. I am sure it has its good parts and its fans. But I loved the dynamic of Super Sons and the Superman run right before that focused on Clark and Jon's father-son relationship, and I think there was still a lot more that could have been done with it. I know comics has its sliding timescale, but they could have shown him growing up more gradually. How did they explain Jon's age up to all their non-superhero friends?

This film resparked my interest in superheroes. The last time I was this excited about them I was... 4 or 5. While I have watched the occasional thing since then, it was never with much interest in really getting into the world. This film changed that and made me want to see what I'd missed in 30 years since Lois and Clark (which my parents had watched and I watched along with them) had originally sparked my interest. As a young kid who'd been a fan of Lois and Clark, this film felt very much in tune with that universe and introduced a lot of stuff about Superman and Batman I didn't really know nor had cared about. The dynamic between Jonathan and Damian really works and is personally what drew me in as the two play off each other rather well.

I really hope Martian Manhunters gets the treatment he deserves in a DC adaptation some day... I get it though - hard to write a character with an alien mindset & that many insanely strong powers. I suppose Young Justice treated the Martians, overall, quite well at least - really got a sense of their power. A justification I could see working for some people, in the climactic heros vs sons fight, is the classic "brainwashed characters aren't at their full potential" - maybe Starro can't think as fast as Kid Flash or its weird telepathy conflicts with Martians 🤷‍♂️

So glad to see a review on this! I also really enjoyed the movie and it got me to read the Super-Sons comics. After reading the comics, I found that the movie perfectly encapsulated how this dynamic duo is. I would love to see more of Jon and Damian in this format! Depending on the writing, adaptions of the Super-Sons like more movies could appeal to a wide mainstream audience. In general, there needs to be more marketing/a bigger spotlight for these straight-to-video/straight-to-streaming DC animated movies. Not every one of them has been good but that ones that are, deserve as much positive attention as the movies that get theatrical releases. Ever since the DCAU, animated stories has been one of DC's best strengths. You can tell that the people making these shows and movies are people who truly love and care about the material. As a kid, I didn't get to a chance to read superhero comics so much of my own DC knowledge and love is thanks to animated shows and movies like Batman: The Animated Series and Static Shock. Although it's much easier for me to find comics to read now, I still love DC's animated works and sometimes prefer them over comics. DC's strength in animation also sadly keeps being underestimated. I hope they continue to make these movies and that there's an understanding that these sort of stories can be just as appealing as the big budget live-action movies.

Fun review of a very fun film - also, that whole discussion about the use of swearing in the movie reminded me of a particularly dramatic scene in one of the best animated movies of my own childhood, namely the 1986 'Transformers: The Movie'; wherein one of the human characters used (by modern standards) a mild cuss word in what turned out to be a deliberate attempt to expand the film's audience by ensuring that it got a 'PG' rating, and therefore got shown later and more often in cinemas than would otherwise be the case back in the day...(on a side note, it would be great if Sasha could review some Transformers comics some day, yes...?).

I was hesitant when I saw the trailer because of the animation but I ended up not minding by the end - as you said the voice acting and the attention to source material made it more enjoyable

Watched this movie last night and I was wondering if anyone online had done a good review on it. Today I see this. Canadian hive-mind??? Lol. This movie was fun and light-hearted. You can tell the people working on it were fans of comics and wanted to tell a good and cohesive story (there seems to be struggles with that recently for some comic book movies). I’m so happy to see you review this movie!

Watched this as soon as it hit HBO Max and thought it was great! The animation and story and Starro himself made an all altogether great movie that worked for adults. And the artwork was alot better than some of the past movies lately. Shame there was no Kevin Conroy...anyway 5 stars! Would it be better to support the channel here on KZfaq or Ko-Fi?

🤔...The movie was fun, but...really, the one thing I did not like was that it feels like Damian is the only Robin in that universe. It also kinda feels like there was a Superheroes can only have one living biological child if they are not twins trope going on in DC...you would think Lois and Clark would have more than just John (unless they did something that explained Lois can't have more kids) even going back to earth two...at least in that one it makes more sense with batman and Catwoman as they get married after batman has been batman for 15 years (brave and the bold # 197) as bruce is 41 by the time he and Selina get married and is 43 when they have Helena and assuming Bruce and Selina are about the same age or close to it Selina is close to her change.(I do not know how to spell the word for it). so that makes some sense...interestingly enough, if its still canon Damian was conceived early in Batman's carrier (i kinda think it's going to be retconned to Damian was cloned the same way Respawn was). Damian is 14 years old...meaning Bruce has likely been Batman for 15-17 years. (i really want Helena to be brought into the main canon.) meaning Helena could be actually coming with all the teases in New Golden Age and JSA. I am fascinated by DC's timeline and trying to figure it out in the Batman books...0_0 (BEEP) i think i just figured out why non of the old new sidekicks in Stargirl the lost children cant go back in time to their propper time.

I miss the super sons so much. Why did they have to ruin Jon with that age up? I'm not mad the he's gay, I'm mad that he's suddenly a grown ass man with Daddy issues. I wish they'd reset them. Jon can still be queer, that's fine. Queer kids need representation. I just want my wholesome adventures back

It was a good movie, and it made me miss having Super Sons in the DC Comics. The relationship between Damian and Jon Kent as two children doing superhero stuff is a great dynamic we need back desperately. Thank you, Bendis and DC! 🤬

I don't get why they felt the need to rapid age Jon. Was he not good at getting younger audiences into comics? Also, I wanted the middle school years of the Super Sons. Preferably with the other legacy kids that have been killed off or disappeared during reboots. Lian and Damian butting heads would have been fantastic.

I saw this movie the week it came out. I thought it was very well done, I agree with your points. However, I feel like this DC universe is looking to get back to basics. Meaning, doing these tropes hopes to establish that everything is back to the status quo. Which is similar to the Comics right now. We had the new52, now this is rebirth. Sometimes in order to bring everything back to normal you need to serve a little bit of cheese. This movie does it very well. It’s engaging, fun, and it’s meant for a wide audience. It checks a lot of boxes and does so with flying colors. I have been enjoying, the new animated movies and I look forward to more to come

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, and it entertained me. And that's what we watch these things for. Loved the animation. It was eye catching. And it didn't look computer generated. So it was great. Some of the recent ones like Man of Tomorrow or Justice Society had backgrounds that were a bit too static. But that wasn't a problem here. Also great was the voice casting. Everyone felt right. Especially the lady voicing Wonder Girl, even though she was only in one scene. One great strength of Dc animation is Andrea Romano. She's been casting directing for a long time. She's amazing at her job. Truth Justice and the American Way: Issue 775 of action of course dealt with that. There was a letter in there on the subject a few issues after. I forget what it said, but I liked the editor's response: 'Truth Justice and the American Way is life, and the pursuit of liberty and happiness for all. Whether the real America lives up to it or not is another matter entirely.' And that's so right. It's an ideal. It's a world like comic book Riverdale [Archie comics setting not the tv version that is] a place where it all smiles and everyone is welcome and welcoming. Whatever you're like. I think the ideal of a world like that is worth fighting for. And it's proper Superman motivation. Race Swapping: as a veteran dc reader, I have seen many versions of their characters. So when a new alternate pops up, I think - whatever they're like - what's one more? So I'm ok, so long as they have the character traits right. In other media: I've never seen the animated Little Mermaid so have no interest in the upcoming remake. And still haven't had the time to watch Rings of Power, so will reserve judgment on it for now. I notice now the internet hates a certain line in the Blue Beetle trailer. Because it annoys the fans! I've been a bat fan for decades. And that line made me laugh. It's called characterisation. So I'm not bothered at all.
