Dr. Benjamin Bikman. He is a biomedical scientist, professor, and expert on insulin resistance.
Dr. Benjamin Bikman studies diabetes and obesity, and much of what he focuses on is a seemingly obscure condition called insulin resistance. But it's, in fact, not very obscure at all.
What is insulin resistance? Why did Dr. Benjamin Bikman devote his career to studying something like this? Well, insulin resistance is essentially two things. First of all, some cells in your body aren't responding very well to the hormone insulin. Second, you have more insulin than you did before, a condition called hyperinsulinemia.
Dr. Bikman's research focus is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. Driven by his academic training (Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders), he is currently exploring the different roles of insulin and ketones as critical drivers of metabolic function. He frequently publishes his research in peer-reviewed journals and presents at international science meetings.

In 2003 my medical practice partner got very angry regarding me diagnosing Metabolic Syndrome. She told me that did not exist, you cannot test for it and it was a trash can diagnosis. When I explained to her what the cluster of symptoms were and the dire implications of it, she scoffed and told me I didnt know what the hell I was talking about!! We parted ways a few months later and I continued to research, learn and very successfully treat it and completely reverse my T2D patients. It was very frustrating in the beginning when metabolic syndrome first came into our zeitgeist. Sadly now 22 years later, there are still providers who refuse to accept how to recognize and properly treat these metabolic disorders. So thanks for all you do to educate the public so they can intelligently challenge their doctors and get proper treatment and eat properly.

In my post here, I want to comment on the caption, so please remember that is my focus: I love listening to Dr. Bikman. (Period.) But I watched (and listened carefully) to this entire video looking for the information that the caption promised, which was tauted as the focus, and at the end, still didn’t have a clear answer. (I think it may have been touched on for about 10 sec.) When a video gives a caption that is quite inaccurate, that’s my definition of clickbait. With respect, please create captions that accurately capture the most important points of your video. I would have watched regardless, but I don’t like feeling like I’ve been snookered at the end.

What you DON'T eat is more important than particulars (as everybody is different some will not do well on "Keto" carnivore thing) it's the "ultraprocessed" foods: chips/snack foods all the stuff in plastic bags (I call it "poison wrapped in poison") that is making people fat and killing them. I personally tried both methods of weight loss..... caloric restriction and lowering insulin spikes, here are my results.... Caloric restriction -From 2014 to 2018, loss 80+lbs from 250+lb to 170lb (yet never stopped eating carbs, seed oils and continued with frequent daily meals) By summer of 2023 regained weight and then some to 262lb! In December 2023 started IF and part time carnivore (after watching Dr Fung video), now in May 2024, in just 5 months, I am down 36lb, without counting calories or even trying like I did many years ago, my conclusion is the following: Fasting and eating nutritient dense foods will allow the human body to naturally correct the internal health issues within us all, no need to workout and "burn off" the calories (like I personally did years ago), wish I knew this years ago, I probably would not have regained all of that weight back.... Currently I am a OMAD, a full-time carnivore, light dumbbell workout 2x a week, 4 mile walks 2x a week, that's it, nothing else. (No more excessive crazy madman workouts like years before)

So how do you burn belly fat fast?????
@nociable
@nociable 3 ай бұрын
One way to get it under control is intermittent fasting. Start 16/8. Avoid carbs, increase protein, hydrate with electrolytes and increase the fasting window incrementally, by slowly going to autophagy (between 16-18 hours) when the fat burning goes in overdrive and you will lose inches and definitely weight. Need to start toning exercises because you could have loose skin. Insuline resistance will be under control, will have tons of energy, clear head and will feel amazing. Just be VERY STRONG during the first two weeks-DON’T GIVE UP!

Also, when you consider the benefits, right there there’s the biggest motivation you are going to need for the first steps. Once you see results, the motivation will take care of itself. I thought I would never be able to do it as when my blood sugar goes low, I become someone I don’t like at all, but believe me when I say, if I did it, anyone can do it. Just my two cents anyway..

They also were likely more active throughout the day. I grew up in the 70's and I was a chubby kid. My parents were also overweight. I remember we ate a lot of margarine, instead of butter. Avoid any "vegetable" oils (seed oils: sunflower oil, safflower oil, canola oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil, etc) and avoid ultra-processed food. Eat meat (and don'tbe afraid of the natural fat that comes with it), and if you need vegetables, focus on green leafy vegetables, avoiding starchy vegetables like potatoes, corn and legumes. Avoid grains altogether (bread, cereal, etc). Dont be afraid of butter, beef tallow, pork lard or other animal fats. Dont be afraid of salt (salt to taste unless you have some medical reason). That should get you started. Women need to tweak the quantities differently from men, so look up videos with specifics.

I did clean keto with coconut oil + whole foods and I was still not losing weight. I'm not sure where I stand on seed oils vs high carbs is more important. Maybe I'm just metabolically very fragile :( Only zero carbs, zero seed oils work for me.

So, theres a lady, wjo worked for the military and she has discovered and developed 3cpd? May have name wrong. She realised that the cell membrane was unhealthy but the 3 cpd was what was missing. She talked about what caused the lack of 3cpd in as much that it was due to we are not eating saturated fat. However, can we hypothesise therefore that it is the huge amount if seed oils we are eating AND the lack of saturated fat missing from our diet that is causong thelack of 3cpd/cell membrane poor integrity? So, no need to buy supplements, just eat properly... Maybe insulin resistance starts with bad (seed) fats?

What I am surmising by both this discussion and personal experience in trying to reverse IR is that once the old fat cells that formed on the poor diet are utilized they will be replaced by new ones while on the meat/fat based diet and only then will IR get reversed especially with insulin being a fat based hormone. So if the original insulin cells were formed in diet lacking of healthy fat their ability to perform is also lacking and vice versa and autophagy will eventually kick in to get to true healing along with weight loss

I tried to read the gist from the transcript but there were so many run-on and incomplete sentences that reading it was harder than listening to it. I haven’t had seed oils in the house in nearly 2 decades, but I got a lot of them unwittingly by eating a lot in restaurants from 2020-halfway through 2023. I started cooking again in October ‘23 and consume an animal-based low carb diet. Have lost minimal weight and no belly fat. The only thing that ever made me lose belly fat was my 4 months on semaglutide. But the side effects became literally intolerable. Of course I gained it all back. I’m experimenting with a variation on a fasting schedule suggested by Ben Azadi (Who can eat 3 meals in a 6-hr eating window? Not I.). So in my third week I’m derailed by some afternoon classes, but I’m sure that sort of disruption will be rare. My body seems to be very good at staying at the same weight no matter what I do….

I stop eating seed oils years ago (my fasting insulin was 14 in April), I stopped eating grains 3 months ago (I will repeat the fasting insulin). I fast between 12-16 hours, anymore makes me dizzy. Hey Dr Bikkman,. I love the way you communicate and stay even keeled but I do have to contest a few points you made when talking about calories . There was a time when I focused more on fat and lowered carbs . Whole food sources like avocados , nuts raw , seeds , eggs , fatty fish etc… I was gaining weight regularly because I stopped tracking calories during that time so I returned to tracking what I was eating . Turns out I was consuming 3200 per day when my maintenance calories are 2575 per day . Essentially I shifted my focus off calories and turned to good fats and I start growing . The Point is , you cant consume this much more above what you burn similar to a bank account . You save or store more than you spend and your account gets bigger . Calories in my opinion and experience are the most important factor . Bodybuilders do this for a living . They would know better than anyone . If there was some low carb hack to get them shredded when contest time comes about , they would tell you this is the most important factor . Their livelihood is dependent on this debate everyone has . At will , (depending on whether they are building or cutting weight) , they can manipulate how it’s done through calories and secondarily carbs but only because the carbs are higher in calories , so , it still boils down to calories . It’s very dangerous to tell people not to be aware of the calories they are consuming if their goal is to be lean and lose weight . The phd you guys spoke about in the beginning was correct in the sense that IF you are using the food consumed every 2 hours , you won’t gain weight . Your rebuttal was about what type of food saying that people are eating the refined sugars and starches and not eggs / sausage . I hope you guys see that the weight gain that could occur from those sugars and starches is not because of those carbs, but on a deeper level , it’s that those type of foods are much higher in calories . Again , the end result is calories not that it’s a sugar . There was a bodybuilder who won mr universe in the past who conducted an experiment and ate all trash the last few weeks before the show while others starved themselves of any carb . He continued to lose the weight and won the title on eating cakes / donuts / bread but the quantity was so small and it had to fit within the caloric range. He felt horrible and unhealthy but did it to make a point . It’s all about the calories . Any weight people lose on keto or low carb is mostly water weight because the science is that for every gram of carb you eat , it hold 3 grams of water . In the absence of carbs , your body will dump the water as you burn the remaining carbs in your body . I lost 10lbs immediately with 2-3 days on keto which equates to 35,000 calories if it were from fat . Most males eat about 2-3000 a day which translates to 6-9000 calories . Even if I ate nothing for a week (7days x2500 per day it’s 17500 calories or 4.5-5 lbs as a maximum fat loss . This tells you it’s all water as shown by how much I was urinating . It’s a deception to think it’s fat because you are dumping quick water . The maximum FAT the average person can lose a week is 4-5 lbs eating NOTHING according to math . Water is a different story and If you are extremely obese you can lose more because maintenance calories higher and yes , you guessed it , there’s more water retention in the tissues so you will lose more quicker . This makes sense because every keto advocate wants you to guzzle tons of water and dump a load of salt in it so it will be retained just like when you eat carbs . It’s much healthier to eat a little carbs of fruits vegetables and such . I do agree 100 percent that the food type matters as far as NUTRITION is concerned but not fat loss . It’s interesting how keto proponents will eat all this high saturated , dead (no enzymatic activity ) food , with no micronutrients , photochemical vitamins , minerals , and say its great because it fits the bracket of low carb yet they focus on the TYPE of food when it comes to the topic of weight loss as they demonize or fear carbs . The food certainly matters but for the main focus of nutrition . Fat loss can occur in both scenarios . Last point , im not a vegetarian or vegan . Im a happy omnivore but the leanest / most fit friends of mine are ones who eat fruits / vegetables / and their fresh juices along with nuts / seeds and their milks which have the whole amino acid profile . They have no problem with excess weight . I cant bring myself to do that because I love all foods but just saying . The way everyone treats a piece of fruit as candy in the keto community is insane . By rights , all these raw food advocates would be 600 lbs due to the evil fructose. The reason why they are lean is due to how it’s impossible to even eat excess amounts of calories eating these fresh fruits and veggies if they are the main focus . The nuts / seeds , yes but the rest of the diet is so low in calories that you are stuffed before you reach your maintenance. Sorry , it’s all about the calories . Anyway ,those are my thoughts and experiences .

4 organs that are potential starting origins of insulin resistance. i have two other mechanisms: * damaged L-cells in the gut, harmed by a destroyed gut microbiome (bad artificial sweeteners, antibiotics). that lowers GLP-1, PYY, CCK output which drives the production of glucagon ==> gluconeogenesis. * high cortisol driving gluconeogenesis possible solutions - or at least things to make it better: 4cl ACV + 3g glutamine + 400ml water first thing in the morning and in the evening. maybe a bit of vitamin C in the morning. what does it do: * the ACV (not pasteurized!) could be good for our gut microbiome * the ACV contains a few percent SCFAs which fuel the L-cells and that boosts GLP-1 production * glutamine fuels the gut and helps to repair the L-cells and increases GLP-1 production * glutamine reduces cortisol * vitamin C reduces cortisol cortisol is highest in the morning and drives gluconeogenesis. so, getting that down lowers insulin resistance. long term taking care of the gut health while cutting out processed carbs is absolutely key!! i had a huge success with keto for one and a half year but then because of an ear infection and gut infection, the doctors pumped me full of antibiotics. and after that, keto did not work anymore. ( because even on keto you can have high blood sugar when your L-cells are damaged )

Unfortunately with the very small exception of a few good docs most of the docs taking care of diabetics are woefully (and I feel deliberately due to their " networks") IGNORANT especially on the issues of fasting and low carb and how they actually work. Back in the day with my Dad a " brittle" diabetic (most likely LADA as my sister was 2 decades later) when in the hospital I would have to fight w the dieticians feeding him a " ADA approved diabetic" diet that would have 5- 7 different carbs at one meal, virtually no fat and a miniscule serving of protein. No wonder his sugar was out of control!!!!
