Stroke and turn changes reflect rule changes. Modern breaststroke and backstroke would all be disqualified by 1972 rules, and freestyle dolphin kicks would have likely produced DQs as well. Not bad technique so much as different rules.

dolphin kicks would not have produced a dq. Also butterfly is just a version of old rules breaststroke.

@@sfuikm In 1972, breaststroke allowed 1 pull, 1 kick, the head must break the surface of the water. Dolphin kicks would have violated that rule. Even today's breaststrokers abide by this rule, although you may see a single "snapping" dolphin kick after the underwater pull off the start and turns. The separation of butterfly from breaststroke happened decades earlier.

Swimming isn't a new sport! It's almost a 200 year old sport, when it was being started as a competition in Britain back in the 18th century!
