The Swiss Champ XLT - it's not for me; but is it for you?

The Victorinox Swiss champ XLT is on the list of Victorinox knives supposedly soon to be discontinued by the company. It is still widely available, however, and may be a tempting option for people looking to expand their collection of Swiss army knives. For me, I was tempted because I had wanted the Swiss champ XLT for some time. The fact that it could be going away give me just the push I needed to buy it. Turns out it's not the right choice for me, but it really could be for people who can use the driver tool on a regular basis. I also really appreciated getting an extra layer with the electrician's blade and the pruner blade.
If you'd like to watch a video or 2 about a man's torrid love affair with his Victorinox Swiss champ XLT, which really were the most compelling reviews I found because of his endearing emotional attachment to his knife, please check out these videos from Daeg Draco below:
• Swiss Champ XLT review
• Swiss champ XLT update
The Swiss champ XLT is available at Victorinox:
www.victorinox.com/us/en/Prod...
If you decide to invest in this, be careful that what you are getting is the correct item. I've noticed some sellers have misleading descriptions and pictures.
Have fun!
Anne

I bought one of these about 20 years ago and it was around £100. Today they are £200. One tell-tale sign mine is an older one is, the magnifying glass has a grey plastic surround as opposed to the all-translucent surround like in this video. I know this knife is overkill and some tools like the "parcel hook" and spatula will never be used, but I love it and always will. As explained in the video, the hex bit tool doesn't exist on the Swiss Champ but here it is on the XLT. This is one tool I have used innumerable times for tightening screws on spectacles and other such tiny fiddly screws like on laptops. The one that makes most sense is the "Cybertool L" because it has the hex tools, pliers, scissors, wood saw, metal file... it's very similar to the Swiss Champ, that itself has the magnifying glass and Philips, along with the fish scale tool no one uses. If you can do without the magnifying glass and the Philips opposite it and the fish scale tool, then the Cybertool L makes more sense than the Swiss Champ or the XLT. As a child I used to dream of owning something like this and today as an adult I am so glad I have got it, although I hardly use it to be honest, it's more of a showpiece, or whatever. The thought of taking it out of the house and losing it horrifies me! They are so expensive these days that if I did lose it, there's no way I'd pay what these cost now to replace it.

The hexagonal bit is an "allen" key very common in the UK and usually come in many sizes, kindo of like torx. The Philips is a posidrive which has more contact area so should work better. Cheers 🍻

It's not Pozidriv, it's Phillips. The sides of the bit are angled, not straight and the star shaped middle section is missing. I wish it was Pozidriv, though. PZ2 is the most common cross shaped screw here in Germany.

The XLT is an amazing piece of engineering. I passed on buying it and got the Champ instead along with a Wera 1/4" Mini Ratchet set with a complete set of bits and drill bits. It is robust enough to drill various size holes into wood which is very useful to me. Your comment about buying things in life that you really didn't need struck home, but sometimes we just need to treat ourselves. Thanks for the review.

I collect Swiss Army Knives and do have one of these but I will admit that it is a bit "busy" with features that you probably would never need and it is a tad heavy (though nowhere near as big and heavy as some of the behemoths produced by Victorinox or Wenger! I have one that is at least double the width of the XLT and features a BUTANE LIGHTER no less!). A real boat anchor, but rather rare. My choice for the best "bang for the buck" is the Swiss Champ. I bought mine over 30 years ago, still have it and had it refurbished by Victorinox a couple of years ago.

The negative points you mentioned are probably the reason the XLT might get discontinued. For me the CyberTool L is the better SwissChamp and the best SAK overall. The screwdriver with the bits is also my most used tool. There is always a screw loose 😅. Especially assembling Ikea furniture, it's pretty much all that is needed. In my experience it is able to withstand a surprising amount of torque.
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
Interesting... that is one of the questions I collected for my upcoming interview/ extreme long-term review - how much torque can it withstand. I don't seem to do many things that involve screws other than the usual - the exception is sometimes toys that have tiny screws. That's a good point - most of the likely "to be discontinued" tools have counterparts that might be better. Exceptions include the tinker small, tourist, executive, and maybe the cybertools that are leaving...

Thank you for great review. I purchased an XLT 10 or so years ago just because I wanted it along with an XAVT. Both are really large knives and heavy to pocket carry. I generally purchase the matching Victorinox leather sheath for my knives which I did for both of these. Like you, I prefer the SwissChamp and the Cybertool for everyday carry. I purchased the larger SwissChamp SOS deluxe leather carry kit 28 years ago and it has been all over the world with me traveling. Thanks for the video. I recently bought a Cyber tool L and I'm so happy! As an electronics technician i use it every day, it has the right size to fit in those small jeans pockets. It's just so nice to have a quality and useful tool on hand. About the price, yes, it was expensive for Colombian standards but sometimes you have to give yourself a nice gift, and this thing is probably going to last several decades if I don't loose it or get stolen 😂. The same big price happens with the Cybertool lite, now that is discontinued too, it was my first choice but i choosed the L because it is cheaper and actually have more tools, i still miss the magnifying glass though, but i can fix that with the swisscard lite later. The XLT was out of question for the same thing, too expensive and big.

I'm sure someone has mentioned that the hex bit is an Allen wrench. I've stopped at the the Explorer as it gets about 99% of what I normally need to do and the other stuff requires a hammer or a larger wrench or plyer. Speaking of which bartender knives are not going to use a bartender knife or SAK corkscrew. Pruning/hawkbill blades are a really good blade option for many tasks. The spatula, if nothing else, is a fun conversation starter among knife geeks. You can use it to stir stuff or loosen a muffin from a baking tin.
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh you finally found the real name of the pharmaceutical spatula! It's a muffin tin loosened! Yes, the Allen wrench... I feel like an idiot for that one. I just had never seen one that was not an L. Or I probably had, countless times, and didn't pay attention. I adore that pruner blade - it's almost enough to make me carry the XLT, I love my Harvester, too. Yes, the Explorer has everything except my beloved saw. Well, ok, no, I like the pliers for picking up gross things. And the fish hook disgorger for poking gross things. And a file for my nails... Wouldn't it be cool to see videos talking about specialty multitools for different jobs? Like, a Halligan for firefighters...

Anne Hello, what a great conversation your big Swiss Army knife has generated. I bet it will continue to inspire good conversations in the future. I know there are people that regularly carry & use the XLT but if I had it I would keep it shiny new and share it with others who will never see or own such a large Swiss Army knife. Victorinox did in the past make two 91mm knives with the small blade replaced with the pruning blade a three layer called the Picnicker & a five layer called the Outdoorsman. basically the Camper & The Ranger with serrated main blades and a hawkbill secondary blade. These knives have become very collectible and command a good price on the secondary market. Like a large part of my collection, my examples are just show pieces at this point. Looking forward to your next video.
@thevineclimber
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
Thanks Hitch! So maybe they can't replace the small blade, but I bet a lot of people would be more than happy to have that blade player in their knives! If i had a picknicker I would just be mad it was to valuable to use. Yeah, I'm going to make the XLT a slightly used museum piece, I guess. Until it gets pulled into service in a dramatic turn of events, just in time to save the day! Thanks for watching and chatting. ;)

BigChungus Cyberdeamon XXL Tip: In case of doubt, use a Phillips screwdriver. While they do not perfectly fit into the Pozidriv screws, one can at least insert the correct size. The use of Pozidriv screwdrivers in Phillips screws works only with screwdrivers that are too small and easily leads to damage of the screw or the tool.

So I have a Cybertool with this same bit driver on it, and I like the driver but the bits are kinda meh. I dont know what they are made from, but it feels like a 50/50 of playdough and parmesan, they deform very easily. It turns out, these arent actually Victorinox proprietary bits, they are standard 4mm, or microbits, with a retention pin in them. While finding entire sets of microbits is very easy, its not very common that they have those retention pins in them. These 4mm microbits also happens to be the same type that kits like iFixit, Wiha and similar precision drivers use, but they are much higher quality than the Victorinox ones. I ended up pushing a Ø3x2mm N52(strength) neodymium magnet all the way to the bottom of it with a pair of tweezers. Its kinda fiddly because it wants to stick to the walls as well, but when I finally got it flipped so it lays flat against the back wall, I put a single drop of glue on a wooden toothpick (because non magnetic) and dabbed it into the empty space around the magnet. Wait for it to dry, and voila! Universal 4mm bit driver where I can keep 4 of my most used bits with me all the time! It also still works fine with the original bits, no clearance issues or anything. The magnets I got from a hobby/miniature store, I think it was maybe 10 bucks for a 100-pack of them. This vastly increased the user experience of mine, if you are interested I can recommend!

Max thickness on a multitool for me for comfortable pocket carry use is mostly around the size of the Swiss Champ (give or take a layer). The SAK I use is one made up of a mix of a Victorinox evolution base with some older Wenger 85mm tools (which ended up being a 9 layer SAK). That said, I'd say the Swiss Champ XLT is probably the largest you can go for a SAK and not be unwieldy.

Another great video with some very well thought out points! A few points of my own: -As far as worrying about damaging the knife, you could always test out Victorinox's warranty. As I recall, they'll repair/replace the knife, even if it's not in production anymore. And, if you wanted, they could repair the corkscrew on your SwissChamp (although I saw someone post the link to the video that shows how to bend it back.) -The problem with the big, multi-layer SAKs is that they get too big to get some of the tools out or use the tools effectively. When I was younger, I really liked the larger SAKs thinking that it's nice to have so many tools. But, after using them and the lower layer models, it becomes pretty clear, for me at least, it's better to have a SAK that's just easier to work with, with the tools I'm more likely to use. -I would like to see Victorinox offer different options for the small blade on SAKs, such as the pruning or electrician's/sheepsfoot blades. Of course, it seems unlikely that will happen, but we can always dream, can't we?! -The "pharmaceutical" spatula is also on the MiniChamp, albeit in a different form. I've never really used it myself. And while I have a MiniChamp (both lite and "standard" versions), I've actually just carried the Midnight Manager, since it has the tools I need and a smaller form factor. (My wife does have the "standard" MiniChamp on one of her keyrings though.) Sorry, this got so long, but just some thoughts that popped into my head watching your video. I've enjoyed all the ones you've done so far!

That's so nice; thanks! Yes, I often think that the Huntsman has everything I use most of the time, or the explorer if I don't need the saw. Strangely, I would need to figure out how to carry them on my belt, because they wouldn't stay in the leather holster I use for the champ! Yes, the keychain models are very nice. I have the Rambler and the minichamp- I love the tiny Phillips! I wish the Champ had a tiny Philips like that. I have actually used the pharmaceutical spatula on the mini champ as a cuticle pusher, and it works great! Thanks for the nice note; very interesting thoughts.

@@thevineclimber Victorinox renamed the pharmaceutical spatula to the cuticle pusher as I recall. That might be why my wife has that model, but I've never used it for that. The small combo tool with the small phillips is surprisingly useful! I like using the P7 style suspension clips (I use the KeySmart ones) to carry the 91mm models in my pocket. (The Compact is what I carry). The models you mentioned may be a bit large to pocket carry that way though. Just an option to consider. however.
@thevineclimber

I've thought of that! Except for my cargo pants, the pockets just aren't that great for carrying anything - women's clothes are often form- fitting to some degree, and even a 2 layer SAK is going to be uncomfortable. I really like the suspension clip idea; the KZfaqr who carries the XLT suspends it from his belt, but suspending it from the pocket would work for things of a more reasonable size. I have a long skirt with pockets, and I'd love to carry the SAK in those pockets, but the material is too delicate. :(

Hi Anne, the Allen key/wrench bit which others have told you the hexagonal shaped one is looks like it's the standard size used on bicycles for brake, gear adjustment etc. so it can be very useful. I like the look of the bit driver on this model and the Cybertool range (don't own any of those) and reckon like many Victorinox tools it punches above it's weight. You are a true SAK aficionado for buying this! I don't think I'd consider buying this but I do like it and if you're already carrying a Swisschamp in a pouch I don't think this would be too bulky to carry. I think I will get a Swisschamp one day, probably when I see it at a good price, and afterwards I'll convince myself that I saved money lol. It's really the next logical progression as I have models with saws, scissors or both, but none with a file, pliers or inline Phillips and those are definitely good tools I'd like to try.

I did!! Lol oh yes I did. Oh I'm a Swiss Champ girl!! I hate not having it with me, because it's useful for everything. I probably use it 5 times a day. Scissors and small blade get the most use, saw when I'm stacking wood or using the fireplace, but I use the drivers at unexpected times. The pliers and hook disgorger are good for gross things - like that little lump of coagulated hand lotion or soap that develops at the end of the pump. Magnifying glass to help with things I can't quite see - which is an increasing number! File mostly for my nails - but it works on nutmeg, too. Bottle opener, of course. Honestly never needed the chisel, and I had a bad experience with the fine flathead driver. Hook for one pair of boot laces, or as a cell phone stand.

Pharmaceutical spatula… 😂 Er mer gerd… Victorinox, talk about getting into the weeds… an upside down main blade would do that random task just fine. I’m very attached to the idea of the bit driver, but don’t feel any more confident in the SAK bits than the Leatherman ones. Plus the interchangeability of standard bits seems key. Of course in the end a phillips and flat head cover the vast majority of encounters. I hadn’t realized the little flat driver on the can opener is suitable as a flat phillips…. 🤩 I just bought a sak evogrip s557 for the inline phillips… I think that model is about as chunk layer-wise as I can cope with… I believe it’s 5 layers.

I carry a champ and a mini champ every day. Get great use out of just about every tool. If you have small pots for planting, the medicinal spatula is good for breaking up dirt and digging small holes for seeds. Also good for cutting pills in half with some practice. And you're right. I really like the xlt it looks amazing but I cant see myself getting one at this point. Maybe if say the bit driver had a ratchet function itd be much more useful. The pharmaceutical spatula I could definitely see using it regularly to stir my tea but also to pull out the little square tea bags that don’t have a string. Aside from that I just don’t see any big improvement over the swisschamp. I think up to and beyond a certain price point say more expensive than swisschamp all those models should come with the clock scales and the flashlight. I mean you are definitely paying enough for sure. All that said if someone gifted me one you can bet id use it but I would definitely worry about losing it. I feel the same way about my 1 brass watercolor palette. If I lose that theres just no way I could feasibly replace it even though I really like it. Oh also idk if you have ever tried it or not but the fish scaler makes a great bread knife. I used it this morning to cut open my english muffin so I could toast it and put jam on it. Even better than a regular bread knife too because I didn’t have to worry about cutting myself with it. Just wanted to mention that as I never really had thought of a use for it before.

It's in a weird posiiton anyway as you said. I also wish it had a nail file on back of the hook. I mean it might as well. I'd like to have a seatbeat cutter or some serrated blade rather than the cocaine spoon. It's ok for prodding and holding things down though. The chisel is also in an awkward position and direction. Another cool to see change that would be nice is if the secret slot was precut out of the scales. I'd like to add modified tweezers. In fact, I'd like to purchase modded tweezers "pointy". If anyone knows where to get them. If you're curious or want some ideas...I load my knives with the Firefly and helix tinder and put glow-in-the-dark tape in various places in the recesses of the back of the blades and around the cyber tool. I also put some clear safety floor grip tape on the handles. Works best if scuffed up the scales with some sandpaper and dampen it then add gorilla glue, I'll send ya photos if ya want. I even modded a Sim Card Pin wand with a glued in magnet and stick it next to the metal saw where it fits perfectly. I store a safety pin in with the bits, A streched out helex tinder under inline with a cut out piece of pink pearl pencil eraser on top of said tinder. I have the toothpick under the cybertool as well for a poking tool. I placed the rod from a fire ant under the saw blade. I used the handle of one of the fireants and attempted to glue in a cut Stanley Precision screwdriver. Just to have the glow in the dark handle. Not sure how well it will hold up. I got a paperclip with a bobby pin under a wide rubber band around the pruning blade just as a way of carrying them. ( I put the mini-screwdriver in with a huntsman which didn't come with a screwdriver. As well as some steel pin that I ordereed as backups.) I connect the knife to a "Paracord Lanyard Metal Hook Durable Survival 550 Fish & Fire Cord Keychain" . Which I also modded and added a 17lb-pull magnet. I did what most do and put some tiny magnets under the canopener and hook as well. This knife in particular pairs very well with the SHARPAL 101N 6-In-1 Pocket Knife Sharpener. I got the belt chain clip for pocket carry. Tempted to add a ball bearing for Felix's bow drill trick.

Good video. I bought mine for the same reasons, also this is the largest size SAK I would actually carry (the XXL is just impractical for real use). I also heard that it was going out of production, in fact I bought practically the last one left in the UK. However, I feel I got at least a decent discount on it (3 separate discounts actually), I paid £139 - $178US, still expensive but not the original $315US asking price. Like you, I feel like I have to baby it because it is no longer in production. I also think the spatula is absolutely pointless. Also, sadly the bit driver can be redundant because of the other tools already there. I suppose I can see why Victorinox has stopped production, its much greater expense Vs limited additional functionality make it an unappealing choice for many, I guess. So, the 11 layer knives are no more, and the 15 layer SAKs are completely impractical and therefore only really good for collectors. It seems that we are left with the only large, practical SAK that ever mattered. . .the Swiss Champ.

The Swisschamp XLT is the only Victorinox worth having because it lacks nothing. It's a fully complete toolkit.

Well... I mean, it lacks the mini Phillips from the Rambler!! Lol I get what your are saying, SO MUCH, because that is the reason I wanted it!! And I still wish my Swiss champ had a pruner blade. So yes, I hear you!!

Dude! I regret that purchase, but I really really got an opportunity to see how much I love that pruning blade in every day life. It would be such a waste of money but I want to make the XLT into a Swiss Champ with that blade layer. :)

@mediocreman561 Жыл бұрын
@@thevineclimber You can do it. Just take off the layers you don't like. That is how I started. I did it with a super champ. For the price of the xlt, I'd buy the swiss champ survival kit.

@@thevineclimber Trust me. Once you modify your first SAK, you'll want to make more customs. I am working on a version of the handyman except the can opener and the flat head or on the same side and I got the phillips on the opposite side. The magnifying glass was broken so I couldn't use it. But I am thinking of getting the evo 23 just for the magnifying glass and add it to the build.

To me the best sak would be the swisschamp with the cybertool driver..I rotate the cybertool m ans the swisschamp I us the magnifying glass more than I thought I would I'm very glad you got one im honestly more excited about you getting mutitools than myself just because I love your reviews so much thank you for the video I love my cybertool m I just wish we had more bot options but it's nice having a true number 1 and 2 Phillips ans not worried about rounding them off since there replaceable
