Great Little Trains of Wales #3:
We move now to the worlds oldest preserved railway, the 7 1/4 mile long Talyllyn Railway.
This 2ft 3inch line opened in 1867 from the slate quaries in the hills above Abergynolwyn to the Wharf at Tywyn, with two locomotives operating a 'one train in steam' policy with mixed trains of passenger and freight.
A checkered few dacades passed until the quarry the lined served closed in 1946 and the railway soldured on for a few more years until Haydn Jones, the then owner of the railway, passed away in 1950. The auther Tom Rolt set up a campaign to save the line and in 1951 it became the worlds first preserved railway.
61 years on the line is as busy as ever carrying tourists by their thousands each year, and on this particular Monday four engines can be seen operating the timetable including one of the original line engines. Hope you enjoy!

Highly recommend going it's worth it, the people are great and very friendly. If you do go get a years membership for the Talyllyn Railway, it'll save you money and you can get cheaper rides on some other railways. Also I recommend staying at hendy farm (book way in advance), the farm has its own halt for the Talyllyn Railway, is just a short walk from the town, and some of the cottages are even named after the railways engines. The railway is also the first ever preserve steam railway and is home to the real life counterparts of the Skarloey railway.

Nice video. It's 50 years since I last visited the Talyllyn Railway. I was on hols with friends and camped on the dunes at the end of Neptune road past Afon Dyffryn-gwyn. I loved it! Best bits were clambering up Dolgoch falls in the dappled leafy sunlight, and supping ale in a seafront pub that may well be gone now. Happy days!

Beautifully photographed! Brings back memories of my one trip to Great Britain in the 1980s and my single trip up the lush Talyllyn Railway. Unfortunately, Talyllyn management left a bad taste on the day. Our train was half closed carriages and half open (as in no roof) wagons. A grey day, but the closed accommodation was ample for the crowd leaving Tywyn. At the end of the line, however, it was raining hard, and a large troop of schoolchildren out for a cross-country ramble appeared, having pre-arranged for a trip down line. Despite the fact that every child was dressed for rain in yellow slicker and hat, plus rubber boots, they were escorted to the covered carriages and everyone inside told to go sit in the rain! Some of us were ready to defy the order, but were threatened with being physically hauled off and left with no ride at all if we didn't comply! Most of us were soaked to the skin by the time we reached Tywyn, and it still rankles all these years later! Still a gorgeous side trip for a visit to Wales.

Love this. On by bucket list for places to visit when I first go traveling international. You can even play music from The classic TV series, Thomas the tank engine while watching this.

Honestly when you go I suggest if it's still there going to the ice cream place just outside of town. Another thing I recommend trying to get a place at hendy farm for the week (book in advance, way in advance), and try getting a years membership for the Talyllyn Railway it'll save you some money and you'll get some magazines. I've been going since I was tiny lovely place very nice people as well, always stayed at hendy farm. Hendy even has its own halt for the railway.

This brought back memories from 68 years ago. I was eight in 1952 when we went on holiday to Aberdovey. We went for a ride on the Talyllyn railway. A few years later (‘57?) I went across the Porthmadog causeway on the newly reopened Ffestiniog line.

We are narrow gauge railway, Duncan, Sir Handel as Falcon and Rheneas, Peter Sam as Stuart, Skarloey has been currently based on from Thomas the Tank Engine books

I think I must have bumped into you guys without knowing who you two were - I recall seeing you two guys at Dolgoch station on the same day as your visit; I shot No. 2 "Dolgoch"'s approach from the nearby footbridge.
