First! And it’s ironic because not only was I just playing WoT with the S35, I was just rewatching this series in general!

Great video, glad to see this series is still a thing and the Souma S-35 is by far the most interesting\competent of the early French tanks

I'm happy this serie is back, the visual format is equal to the old one. Trivia note, the Italian deployed theyr S35 to defend the isle of Sardinia in 1943 and use them against the german troops after the armistice.

Methyl bromide is used as a cooling agent. It's not exactly the safest thing,since it is flammable in specific circumstances(although those rarely happen inside a tank),reactive,and toxic. But it was the 30s and no one came up with anything better.

That point about the lack of upgradability is important. If the French had managed to hold out until 1945 (a what-if I've been toying with lately), managing to force the kind of static attritional warfare that they were aiming for, it's hard to imagine how they might have kept their armored forces relevant given that none of their prewar designs seemed capable of taking the kind of upgrades that would have been necessary to make them effective in 1945. Especially when you consider it would have taken somewhere from 5-10 years to develop a completely new tank from scratch (I suppose the Tiger and Panther were developed in less time than that, so there is some hope for the French, but their rushed development is probably a contributing factor to their reliability issues). The best I can come up with is to remove the turret from the Char B1 bis (that 47mm is pretty useless by then anyway), sending it into action as essentially an assault gun, and replace its low velocity 75mm gun with a medium velocity 75mm gun (maybe a high velocity gun if you can find enough room for the back end). I don't know how much you could increase the armor to make it more than a glass cannon by late war standards. That depends on whether you can install a more powerful engine in it (it's already slow enough that adding more armor is a non starter if you can't get a more powerful engine).

A three-piece hull, bolted together like a tall, roofed bathtub, with a one-man turret. What a weird tank.

I've always heard from different sources that the French actually had better tanks than the Germans during the beginning of the war but I'm not seeing it here. Even if all French tanks were equipped with radios I still think the French tank crews would still be at a disadvantage. The German tanks had better layouts and the commander didn't have to multi task in such Panzers like the Panzer 3 and 4.

Good video. constructive criticism: raise your paper or prompter so you are looking at the camera while you read. change your lighting to reduce or remove the reflection in your glasses. get a green screen to highlight some of you cool models or other interesting historical backgrounds. Best of luck!

I'm just burning with curiosity as to what could have developed from this vehicle if France managed to pull through in 1940. Edit: Not necessarily a new variant but related in the sense that the M3 influenced the M4

I wonder why they didn't toughen up the FT17s for second line use. They had so many they could have had some effect with decent upgrades.
@thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368
@thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368 3 жыл бұрын
considering how small and outdated the FT was, I am not sure that upgrades would really be worthwhile. You would have to update so much of the vehicle that it would probably not be much cheaper than just building a new, much better, tank. Anyhow, the French were very budget conscious, to the point of re-using the old 37mm guns from the FT tanks in the newer R 35 tanks. .

@@thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368 I'd of thought better front armour, wooden wheels replaced, a lengenthed 37MM gun and possibly a new engine would have made the FT17 OK for the age.

@bencejuhasz6459

@@Yukatoshi No upgrades would have helped the FT-17. It's design was already surpassed in the 20s so much,that simply adding extra armour and upgunning the vehicle wouldn't help it. The Soviets tried something like that with the MS-1(or T-18)[being an FT-17 copy and upgraded version at the same time] light tanks,giving them a new turret with better armour and their 45 mm tank cannon(same type as on the T-26 or BT-5),but it didn't work out.

@@thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368 Huh. Could also be Italians. There was a tank battalion that was part of the 131st Tank Regiment in Sicily and then Sardinia. Looks pretty dry. I just cant make out enough details. Supposedly the Italians preferred the R35 because the S35 was too "slow". You don't know the photo source do you?

@@thetanksofworldwarii-tanka4368 Thanks. I found it. I was right at first, that's a French crew from the 2nd French Armored division fighting in Royan (A commune in France). Royan was part of the "Siege of La Rochelle" and was one of the last French cities to be retaken in 1945 from German coastal holdouts. So that S35 was fighting in 1945. Cool.
