I like to think it was the Tardis, and for once we were seeing the Doctor's adventures through the eyes of us ordinary mortals, unable to grasp what was really going on, or how the Doctor was saving the world somewhere nearby! :-)

Originally broadcast on 9th November 2003. Near the 40th anniversary of Dr Who.

Seeing as the show lasted longer than the actual 60’s did, it’s possible Aidensfield and the surrounding area is a time anomaly that the Doctor would want to investigate!

my favourite part, because the disappearing and reappearing box was never explained, maybe it really was the Doctor :)

It wasn't a police box it was David's sarnie.📦 box.. He's a growing lad.

problem is that police box was rather too new to be the tardis. But i suppose he also saw a short dark haired man in baggy trousers wearing a frock coat tootling away on his recorder

To see the TARDIS in heartbeat is well awesome in billions of ways and one would, expect to see the Doctor come out of the Police Box.

How very apt "Time drags by", sung by Cliff Richard.

This is interesting as ‘Doctor WHO’ being a BBC show, and trademarked the word, showing up in ITV’s ‘Heartbeat’ must’ve involved a lot of cross conversation and tiptoeing around licensing

I swear real police boxes were made of concrete

Yes, mostly concrete with a teak door.

I visited a scrapyard as a kid in the 70s with a friend and his dad, and there were rows of old police boxes, and they were indeed all concrete and metal because they also doubled as temporary police cells. The TARDIS is wood for the show, as is this one.

I was thinking... this episode came out in 2003. Doctor who came back in 2005. By the time this episode came out they must've started thinking about the return, right? Maybe this was meant to be a little hint at the return of Doctor Who?

More likely. 2003 was the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who.

Except for the fact that Heartbeat was an ITV show, Dr Who was and still is a BBC production. ITV wouldn't be promoting any plans that the BBC might of had at that time.

Don't recall seeing this episode, but then again this was the time when I stopped watching Heartbeat has it ventured far too much into comedy territory. Heartbeat from the start had some light humour interspersed with the gritty and sometimes controversial storylines (drug issues and the girl who had an elderly woman assist in her abortion), but the comic relief went too far IMO. David, when he appeared in series 5 (I think) was a believable character who had social issues, but later they made him into the village idiot. Same with Lord Ashfordly, who at first was a stubborn, snobby and arrogant Lord who looked down on eveveryone who wasnt seen that much, but later made him a friendly-ish character and a regular down at the pub which to me didn't feel right. In the early series Ashfordly had a son, but for some reason he never appeared again. The early series seemed to have a quite realistic 1960s vibe about it with the appearance of mods and troubling youths, but it became too stereotypical later on.

David Stockwell turned into the village idiot big time, I watched an episode today which is series 17..itv3) David is in his van and he looks and there's a man running naked in the wooded area. Later on in the programme the man running naked in the woods jumps off a bridge .. And Peggy eats some "space cake.🍰🎂 maybe it just ran out of ideas because it was on for such a cumbersome amount of time.. I still watch the repeats. It used to be gritty with swear words yes correct.✅

He looks under the truck!!! Stupid programme. Was this meant to be a real police call box because if the props department made that it's shocking!
