I have FINALLY gotten around (as requested) to covering the TDI line from KABAR. It’s hard not to love these staples in the edc fixed blade self defense world. #kabar #selfdefense #tacticalknife

I was a patrol sergeant back in my 20s and carried one of these. I have to say, you nailed it with your analysis. I tried a few different methods but ended up carrying it off hand tucked behind my taser. The idea was if someone tried to pry my gun out of my holster I could push down on it for retention and use the kabar to force distance. Awesome little knife but now that those days are behind me, I could never find a carry method I was happy with. I actually picked up an el nino based on your recommendation!

I carry an investigator for my job as a security guard. I have some reservations on open carrying a knife on a duty belt, however, so I carry mine on an RCS Pocket shield, next to a tourniquet. I give up some access, but it's still quicker than a folder, and the angle of the grip makes for a very organic draw.

A few years before I retired our Officers carried this knife. I carried on the strong side due to fact of elbow pain. We were also trained to disable the person. As in the shoulder with the nerves. Good knife.

Glad you posted this review. The TDK is still more affordable as a quality made knife than the custom made pieces that seem to get endorsements but cost in the. $200 range. For what it is designed for, it is good to carry for a variety of activities. I have the LDK variant. Again, the price is more than reasonable for a quality piece of steel.

I was a patrol sergeant / range officer and carried one of these after attending a training school on weapon retention. We were shown how much faster it was to deploy than the folders we all had clipped to our pockets. The sheath fit behind my magazine carrier on my belt, was out of the way but quick to grab. Great video, you're analysis is right on.

I'm looking at several back-up knives, right now. The TDIs are definitely on the list. I'm also looking at the CRKT Bear Claw. The plain-edged, pointy one, not the seatbelt cutters, although I'll probably get one of those, eventually, for "just in case" scenarios, where I might need to save someone (it has happened, before). And, there are some push daggers as well. I can legally carry whatever I want, concealed, as long as the blade is 5.5 inches, or shorter. Ka-bar has a lot of options in the TDI collection. I dunno, I start looking at knives, and I get "kid in a candy store" overwhelmed. I want them ALL.

Wasn't previously aware of the Bear Claw! Thanks for bringing that one to my attention. If you haven't given the Shivworks Clinch Pick 2.0 (double-sided) a look, I definitely think that one could give you some good mileage. And if we're talking pure self-defense (especially if you carry a firearm), I find the MDV Plus One from Skallywag to be really tough to beat. EDIT: You might also like the Kizer Bowtie that just dropped a few days ago, or perhaps the Variable by them.

My police officer nephew gave me a 1480 years ago and I’ve carried it extensively. I carry it off hand side a bit to the front and find that I barely notice it’s there. You’re right on point with the techniques for its use but if I may you can can draw it with a reverse grip and use it like a karambit as well. Punching with a reverse grip feels a little awkward but it works too. Keep up with the great content and presentation. Love it!

The Ka-Bar 1480 was my first "get off me" knife that I purchased and carried for awhile. I still have it, and I bought a different Kydex sheath for it so it would have an even smaller footprint. Also I added a mini Ulti-clip on the new sheath so it was very comfortable to carry even with sweatpants. It is a very affordable, defensive tool. I don't think anyone could go wrong in buying one and using it. Even if you lost it, or it gets taken away by the police if you had to use it legally in self-defense, it won't break the bank to get another one.

For sure nobody's gonna get that out of your hand easily. When they had first introduced those knives years ago, I wrote a letter ( yeah it's been that long ago) to Kabar with the suggestion that they should consider bringing out a straight-spined version of the knives as an outdoors utility knife. Never heard anything back or anything else, so I assumed the letter was round-filed. I still think an un-bent version of basically the same knife would be a good utility all purpose knife

Learned something new. I knew only the two long and short blade versions (with various edges and points), nice that they offer the same blade with smaller handle, more Clinch Pick size. Pick what works best for you. I only owned the Last Ditch Knife but sold it as being too small and harder to grip. I see they have a TDI folder version but that would come up with all the fine motor skill issues. Yup, can't own a push knife in Canada, but you can own a TDI.

Thanks for the video. I've seen these, but I've never thought much about them. One thing that I love about a push dagger is that I can drive with a push dagger in my hand and still grip the steering wheel pretty much in the same way that I always do. In a bad situation where someone broke my window and was reaching into the car, I can stab or slash with the knife and then go back to driving my way out of the situation. I don't think this knife would be as easy to hold while driving. As a small get-away-from-me knife, I can see either of these being very effective. The shape would make them easier to carry comfortably. One of these would be much more comfortable than a push dagger. The light weight would make putting one in a pack as a backup easy enough.

I've been thinking about getting one of these but haven't been sure for one reason or the other. The prices on Tomar's beat the prices I've seen elsewhere, so figure I might just go ahead and scoop one up. Are the sheathes different between the 1480 and the 1493?
