"Depth of field is a printing error in this film." I don't think the significance of that statement can be overlooked. As a pressman, the effect you are describing is the LAST thing you want, but in comics and newspapers you would find it a lot because of the speed and amount of prints being made. In short, no one really cared too much. It does feel nostalgic and once I realized what they were doing, it really was a profound moment since I have personally been involved in the printing industry for 20 plus years. Thanks for sharing it with everyone as the technological achievement it really is.

Considering how underrated and underappreciated printers may be to the general public who's main exposure to printer's may be one they bought from Hobby Lobby in 1998, your expertise really goes a long way in seeing the charm of this film.

My closest experience is doing printmaking for fine art in undergrad, and good lord now I need to email my instructor for him to look into this. A printing error, a technical imperfection, becomes a central part of the film's visual texture. An element that can be scrubbed out in a digital age, deliberately worked BACK IN because it's being put to conscious use to pay homage to the technological past of the medium it's adapting. That is beyond beautiful.

I think that's what sets this apart from other superhero movies. Tony Stark, Bruce Wayne, Thor, Superman, they're heroes because they're special, they've always been extraordinary, Miles was not special, he was just a kid, but the responsibility was laid onto him and he rose to the challenge, he became better, he became a hero. That's the part that makes me tear up "anyone can wear the mask, YOU can wear the mask."

Addendum: Characters are animated on different levels -- there are moments where Peter B. and the other Spiders are animated on *ones* to show how fluid and professional they are in swinging, while in *the same frame* Miles is animated on twos to give a choppier sense of movement because he is new to all of it (he eventually gets the animated on ones as he literally jumps into being Spider-Man).

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is, without a hint of hyperbole, in my opinion, the greatest superhero film ever made (and it is not close), and the most important technical achievement in mainstream animation since (at least!) the first Toy Story. It's also a movie about a boy discovering who he is and learning to love himself and navigate a complex world while trying to find his place in it and make it better. It made me cry 4 times on the first viewing alone. It's astonishing, and I love it so very much. Thank you for doing justice to all of those things Mikey, another stellar episode

When I saw Incredibles 2, I remember thinking that, while it was a good enough sequel, it didn't have the same impact as the original because it was more of the same. Spider-Verse, though, made me feel the way I felt coming out of the first Incredibles in 2004, that the capabilities of the medium had been expanded. And I'd been boggled by the quality of Black Panther right at the beginning of the very same year, and Spider-Verse beat *that*. It was also a far better universe-scrambling mass crossover event than Avengers: Infinity War or Endgame, and it didn't even have the weight of a giant movie series behind it (or, well, if it did, it was the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, that weren't even really in the same continuity).

I *LOVE* the way origin stories are handled. The introduction of our side characters with their comic books is amazing, but I can’t even talk about that because of Miles. The first of Miles’ comic books is “the two Spider-Men” or something like that, and it drops when Miles *thinks* this is his origin story, he thinks he’s supposed to be ready, and he’s freaked out because he’s not. But as we’re shown by the other 5 Spider-People, the origin story is the Uncle Ben moment and the leap of faith. *AND SO* when Miles finally gets to his leap of faith, and swings off to the final battle, his *true* comic book finally drops, because *now he has had his origin story and he IS SPIDER-MAN*

The things I've gathered about the movie from watching a ton of these videos, the things that stuck with me. The film is animated in two's, however not every character animates in the same amount of frames, sometimes even the same character changes the framerate. The more frames you have to an animation the more fluid the movement looks, so the animators took this into consideration when designing the movie. Confidence is displayed by the framerate/fluidity of a character and it's also used for comedic effects in certain scenes. The best example is when Miles and Peter B Parker are swinging in the woods. Since this is Miles's first time swinging he flails around at first trying to get the hang of it. Here Miles is animated in less frames than Peter as Peter has done this multiple times and is already a pro, but through the scene as Miles becomes more confident his framerate catches up to Peter's. The goal of the creators was to make sure that every single frame in the movie could be a comic book panel, and this holds up for the most part. However they did not mind sacrificing a couple of frames in order to invent more with the animation. The most noticeable thing that everyone knows about is how lighting works with the Ben Ray Dots and also how Onomatepoetikons (words that describe sound) like TWHIP and SKKRT popping up everywhere possible. Like when Peter throws a bagel at a scientist the word Bagel pops up as a sound. In addition to this though the animation is also based on traditional. Despite being a 3D animated movie, they went out of their way to make it feel 2D by intentionally copy animation shortcuts taken from older animation. Like if someone is waving their hand instead of just animating a hand from side to side they took the liberty to have multiple hands at once in different positions being stretched out with blurred lines covering it up. That's a long sentence, but doing it like that exaggerates the movement, but is hardly noticeable when just watching the film. It's hard to explain, but slow down a scene where there is sudden and rapid movement and see for yourself. A big challenge came with the other Spider Verse characters as they all have their own animation style. They had to make sure that the renders for these characters looked unique and distinguished with its animation, but not seem like it belonged in a different movie. In order to have animation styles to experiment with, they invented the character Peni Parker so they would have an excuse to use anime kind of animation. So contrary to popular belief, no Peni Parker was not an already established character in the comics before this movie, and she is the only one of the Spider cast to be completely new. She does have her own comic explaining her backstory that I think released before the movie did, but it was done more to promote the movie and Peni wasn't even a thought until the development of this movie begun. The ascension scene is what a lot of people consider their favorite scene of the movie as it so hype and shows the audience a character we've been rooting for finally become his potential. This scene alone could be talked about forever. As mentioned in this video, they took one of the morals of the movie "Take a leap of faith" with the second one being "Anyone can be a hero" and turned it into a literal leap of faith. This leap was also framed in a way to show Miles falling upwards, or ascending. The soundtrack for this movie has a ton of easter eggs in them and also had a ton of artist collaborate to make a fantastic album to represent Miles. If you go on Spotify to listen to it, then most of the songs have lyrics that direclty points towards Miles or refference Spider Man, meaning that all of the songs were specifically created for this film. My favorite song being "Start a riot" as it is about Spider Man or someone with the power of Spider Man gaining confidence. However, in the movie this song was just used once and not even to it's full potential. You can hear a muffled small part of it as it is the music that Ned listens to in the room before he discovers the Spider people. Back to "What's up danger" and the ascension scene, the song itself is not as heroic or orchestral. Instead, the movie uses a spiffed up version of the song. The Soundtrack you won't find on Spotify is all of the background music or themes that were created by the composer Daniel Pemberton. The story of the movie has a grounded reality which is Miles's universe and fantastical elements, which is the multiverse. So the rap and hip pop that the other famous artists created are only used in scenes focusing on Miles in his own element or his own grounded world. Whenever the Spider People show up then the music will switch to the musical score. In the ascension scene, Miles, a grounded character, master the fantastical elements so the hip pop song is then mixed with the fantastical score to represent Miles's control. The distorted trumpets you hear when the Prowler is on screen is actually real elephants blowing air out their trunk. This sound stands out and is used only when the Prowler is on screen. Except for this scene where it is integrated into the song to represent the influence Miles's uncle had on him. This sound can also be found in the actual radio version of the song that you find on Spotify, but it doesn't hold the same weight as it does in the movie. In additon to that the movie has it's own little heroic cue that it play's every time a hero does something, well heroic. This melody plays when Peter saves Miles, when Miles correctly swing with the webshooters for the first time and in other heroic moments. Of course this melody would make it into the ascension scene as it blends in with the song. Here it goes from the simple one instrumental melody to a full out orchestral one showing the gravitas of this moment. I seriously could go on, but these are in my opinion the best examples of the length and effort not only the directors and writers went through, but absolutely everyone involved with the film. It's not my favorite movie, but it is the one I like to talk about the most.

Um... No? Peni Parker was introduced in Edge of Spider-Verse #5 back in 2014 as part of the Spider-Verse event. She was chosen for this movie from a roster of existing Spider-People, for both providing both female and asian representation and for her more unique powerset compared to initial choice Silk. She was heavily redesigned for the movie, but she definitely already existed.

When making Interstellar, they just wanted to try this "realistic" rendering. Nolan always said, if the audience won't get it, they would make it "less real" aka. more cliched. Then they got the first renders and immediately knew that it would work. The lensing, the warping of the accretion disc, it all made sense, even if you didnt understand the physics behind it.

I pinch myself a little every time I watch Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse. It literally makes me thankful to be alive (among other things of course). You barely even touched on the music and character themes in this video, but they are just so good. I have two daughters (6 and 8) who also love this movie and they talk to me about how the What's Up Danger scene gives them chills and they don't even understand what they are or why it is happening. If I was a major creative force behind this movie I might never be able to work again. I don't know how it would be possible to ever follow this up.

While during one session with my therapist, just after getting hired at my new job, when talking about how I didn't think I was ready to do a job in my field (I am an Applied Behavioral Analysist Tech for an in home therapy company that works with children with autism) she asked me why. I told her that I was afraid to mess up, or that I wouldn't be good enough and she said because I feel that way is exactly why I am ready. When she said that it instantly made me think of the leap of faith scene and I even described it in the context of my fears. Even though Miles took the leap, the animators made sure to show us that the glass broke. He was still scared when he took that jump, otherwise it wouldn't have broken, but he still took the leap anyways. Same with how I felt, and anybody else afraid to do something because they think they aren't going to be good enough or they will mess up. It's a leap of faith, just take it. P.S. Thank you Mikey for making these videos, they are always amazing and you have even convinced me to watch a movie that I wouldn't have watched otherwise, not this one but others. On point on everything about why this movie mattered. This is quintessentially the most spiderman film to ever exist; not because it contained so many spider-people (and animals), but because it holds the themes of spiderman (responsibility, rising to the challenge, believing in yourself, getting back up again, family, fixing your past mistakes, and many more) in such high regard that it represents at least two or three in every scene. These themes are why people gravitate to Spider-Man so much. And then add in how modern the story is through Miles Morales's eyes; how a mixed-race coming-of-age with so much responsibility thrust upon him has to balance doing what is right, what he wants, and what others want for him. That's beautiful. It's like putting lens upon lens on top of each other until you well and truly see the real picture. Say what you may about Bendis or Arad, but they understand Spider-Man to the fullest. I'm glad they could make this film.

Spider-Man into the Spider-verse is truly a technical Marvel. Especially when it came out in a time were so many animated studios were going for a photo realistic look over a more stylized look. You can feel the effect and inspiration Spider-verse has on projects now.

Into the Spider Verse is this generation’s Akira; film animation will never be the same again. Thank you for stressing the true art behind this film; it was truly breathtaking at times without distracting from story, brilliance.

This film is visionary. It blew away all my misgivings about superhero movies. I've watched it so many times, and it just keeps surprising me. There is so much to absorb. I love that you delved into the ones and twos issue, because I've never seen it used with such purpose. One point about the color misalignment etc., is there's also a prismatic photo technique happening that is more rgb than cmyk. Just an immensely enjoyable analysis here, beautiful graphics that serve the purpose of the subject. Thanks.

My eyes started to water, because it was information overload. There were so many elements fighting for my attention, but in a good way. It is a very impressive accomplishment that was actually given wide release, as opposed to ‘Waking Life’, Richard Linklater’s first animated feature. When I saw his next animated feature ‘A Scanner Darkly’, I fell in love with the animation of the scanner suit. This is like that x9000.

Personally, I think that the most important part of the leap of faith was that Miles DIDN'T believe in himself when he did it. He had to tear the glass off of the building because he wasn't ready to let go, but he did it anyway. He became Spider-Man because he was able to do the right thing, to take a leap of faith, when it counted- even when he was scared.

They not only took that football through the endzone and out to the parking lot, they ran a couple blocks down the street, entered the next stadium over, and ran all the way around the bases like they'd just hit a home run. (This is quite possible in Seattle, where the stadium for the Seahawks (American football) is literally separated from the home of the Mariners (baseball) by a single longish block occupied by an event center/convention hall thingy.)

I'm so glad that you've been able to expound on the technical achievements of this film. I've never really been able to adequately explain it, as I'm not fully knowledgeable about the mechanics of CG animation, and what I do know ends up super jargon-y.

What I love is that this is a film for everyone. Miles and Gwen are necessary now. But for older Spidey fans like me, this film also gave us the perfect take on Peter Parker. Nothing, not the comics (at least not since the late 2000s), not the cartoons since spec, not the MCU, not Sony’s live action attempts, have understood who Peter Parker is as well as this film.

So, I'm mostly just posting this here because it's the most recent Movies with Mikey video. But, I wanted to let you know that you have at least one more fan. Your videos are incredible and help me view films in a more critical light. They propose important questions about our purpose on this Earth and how we view, interpret, and internalize art, and I feel blessed every time I watch one of your videos because I KNOW I am going to learn something more about my beliefs, and how what art I enjoy either challenges me or makes known to myself what is important to me. Keep doing you, Mikey. What you do is amazing, and you've got a fan until, like, ever.
