A review of the board game's miniatures from the perspective of a mini painter and a dungeon master looking to expand his miniature collection.
My Silly Gaming Channel - / @evaneezer
The Temple of Elemental Evil board game is the fourth entry in the Dungeons & Dragons Adventure System series. Many of these miniatures are themed around the four elements. Fear not. There are still plenty of good general purpose models included as well. In this video, I review the board game from the perspective of a mini painter and a dungeon master looking to expand his miniature collection. This is not a review of the board game but rather a review of the game's miniatures and their value to a DM or player of the D&D roleplaying game. Throughout the video I touch upon what I like and do not like about the minis, my choices in painting them, further painting ideas, and possible uses for them in the larger world of miniature gaming.

Painting/Prep Tips for These Miniatures
I have had paint chip off of these kinds of miniatures before, but not since I have inserted these three steps to my painting process.
1. Wash the miniatures before you paint them. They come coated with traces of manufacturing residue that repels paint. You want paint to stick to the models not wick off. Scrubbing them with a spare toothbrush in warm soapy water will do the trick.
2. Prime the miniatures before you paint. This can be done by spray can, or airbrush, or thinly brushed on by hand. A coat of primer will help the paint adhere to the plastic.
3. Varnish your miniatures after the paint has fully cured. I have had paint chip off miniature before and it gets tiresome touching them up. A couple thin coats of varnish will protect the paint job.
The D&D Adventure System of board games has been going on for over 10 years now. Each entry in the series contains unpainted versions of official Dungeons & Dragons miniatures. If you do not mind unpainted minis, then this series could be a great way to broaden your miniature collection. If you paint minis, then these board games make for a fun challenge.

Watching and listening to this was very calming. Honestly, the models from these games have such poor detail that it takes quite imagination to make them work for their intended roles. Especially the enemies. However, you pointed out quite a bit of detail I missed. I’m about to paint these myself and your overview gave me quite a lot to think about.

Great video! Watched all four of your D&D board game miniature videos. Are you planning on making one on Tomb of Annihilation?

Nice to get a good look at the miniatures. I'm no painter, just looking to mainly just expand my D&D collection, covering more of the monster manual. I do agree about the heroes, they all look useful. I only have two halflings and one dwarf woman so getting new additions there is great. The cultists... I guess they can be used, but I already have plenty of different human soldiers/thugs miniatures. Hobgoblins might be neat, I don't have any yet though have some orcs that can pass for them. Bugbears and gnolls I already have some of from the 2003 D&D board game, those are a bit smaller so might not match well with these while I would not mind getting some more of them. Troglodytes would be new for me too, and having something that can pass for lizardmen as well would be welcome, weird there hasn't been lizardmen in these games yet. The Ettin and some of the elementals would be the main draw for me, I do have two generic elementals from another game that are a mix of all four elements, and also the water elementals from Legend of Drizzt. So a little more is alright there too, and I don't have a salamander yet. Fire bats I don't have yet and honestly don't care that much for. I already have some dragons and don't truly need one in flight, can be fine but I'd worry about the standard breaking. I'm still doubting if I will get any more games in this series though, I already have Drizzt, Ashardalon and Ravenloft and from what I understand those have the best quality miniatures, seem to have the best selections too. If I'd get another one it would be this or Dungeon of the Mad Mage. Beholders, grung, intellect devourers and hags all seem pretty good additions. Sadly a lot of human soldiers/thugs there too though and its heroes seem a bit less interesting than these ones. And they seriously should put a Bullette in one of these games, it's high on my wishlist of miniatures I don't have yet.

Thank you for these videos. May we expect more of them? I would love to see your take on ToA and DotMM. 🙂 May I request similar videos on other miniature boardgames? I would love to hear your opinion on 2021 HeroQuest, Dungeon Saga, Massive Darkness, etc., including what you reckon the miniatures could be used for in a D&D setting. 😃 Btw, I have also fully painted CR, WoA and LoD, and partially painted ToEE, ToA and DotMM, and I think it’s awesome to see your take on how the miniatures should (or could) be painted; sometimes we are in agreement, and sometimes not as much - and it’s great! 😄

Glad to hear you are enjoying this series of videos. I will eventually get to Tomb of Annihilation and Dungeon of the Mad Mage but I still need to paint the minis. I might delve into some of those other board games for miniatures after.
