Outside the walls of Athens, next to the river Ilisos, stood a small ionic temple which is thought to have been dedicated to the goddess Artemis in the form of Artemis Agrotera (protector of the hunt). The temple was probably built in around 440 B.C.E.
At some point during the medieval times, the temple was converted into a christian church dedicated to the Mother of God, known as “Panagia stin Petra” (Mary on the rock).
The temple still stood in a relatively good state (along with christian alterations) until 1778, when the Turkish governor of Athens dismantled the temple and many other monuments in order to use the material on a new city wall he built. The marble parts of the temple were turned into lime.
Today almost nothing remains of the temple and the excavated field is on dispute between the owners and the Ministry of Culture.

Amazing video nice design what 3d animation website did you use? And I love this temple but I’m kinda sad what happened to it should have gotten the same respect as the Parthenon or Athena Nike temple also I think you should make a video about the Athena Nike temple aswell😊!

How do they know what it looked like if it was completely ruined?

Luckily, the architects James Stuart and Nicholas Revett visited the monument a few years before its destruction and made detailed plans and depictions that were published in their book "Antiquities of Athens".

@@AncientAthens3D Thank their efforts! I find it somewhat humorous that churches were made out of tiny and large temples alike. It makes me wonder how much more ancient architecture would be better-preserved if they had simply went ahead and converted all the major temples to churches, instead of undergoing some weird identity crisis about whether it was appropriate to reuse pagan temples.

@@georgemichas8773 virtually impossible. Even ordinary people will use the stone at some point. Churches usually made a better job of preserving temples when they used them, like Pantheon and Theseion than when they did not.

This video reveals why I cried over churches and chapels when I was important to prayer towards female saints- because Christian colonization was the shittiest. 🤧 However I do appreciate that all pagan temples from Αρχαία Ελλάδα were all glorious, because the rise of Christianity was dark, that some people were afraid of the Church.

The people making this probably didn’t want to use their voice or they don’t speak English idk but in this video they talk about the temple and what happened to it basically a short documentary and this is a semi famous temple and they added the music to make it look beautiful and majestic because it’s a wonderful monument in Greece even though it’s not physically there anymore so don’t feel weirded out or confused it’s just good history 🙂.
