I really enjoyed your video. I'm former Army Special Forces guy, and your soap story brings this memory: Once upon a time, in a land far, far, away .. after 10 days of mountain ski patrol, I was smelling like Sasquatch and down in the mental dumps .... I found a mountain stream, I broke the ice and took a bath. That soap and fresh water made me feel like a new man. I always have soap. Thanks for sharing.

You hit the nail on the head with the bar of soap. I think most contestants on the show focus on items that will help on the physical side, axe, pot, saw, etc. but forget about how mentally draining it is out in the bush and being able to clean up renews your mindset. Great thinking!

You two played the psychological game better than any contestant on that show, ever. I can tell you guys thought really hard on what those items were going to be. I was rooting for you two since day one. I could see that you were people I could talk to, that could teach me something I didn’t know without the thought cross your mind that your better than anyone else. I could see that. I think you guys won the show, all 3 teams that were left there at the end won that show. You guys are some tuff people. Tuff like most don’t understand. I know your just a guy the same as I’m just a guy, I don’t hold you above any man or woman. I just know that your good people. That’s all I got to say.

Thanks Adam. Brooke and I both really appreciate the comments and the compliment. I think the thing that we really did right was we enjoyed the whole thing and were always happy out there and we left happy when we had no other options. List: 1. GORP (trailmix) mix of chocolate chip, peanuts and raisins (excellent choice) 2. coffee pot 3. steel pan (would have taken a Leatherman) 4. two Tarps (white color for psychological motivation) 5. Fishing lines (10, 20, 50 lbs) & fish hooks 6. knife 7. ferro rod 8. sleeping bag 9. axe (~$16) 10. saw (oldschool bow) -> ~$5 11. Bar of soap (makes a difference mentally) Congrats on the 22 (24) yrs coming up!

Alone can give an unreal angle to people preparing to go out in the wilderness. They ban things like a tent, which people might in reality take. You made a good point about a white versus green tarp. When the glass jar you found broke, it seemed to help to break you in one series - these small things can matter a lot, like the buzz you got from the salt in the trail mix.

So my wife and I have been binge watching Alone and started watching season 4 this week. I subscribed to Dave's channel after watching his solar panel video last week. I didn't make any connection between the two shows until I happen to get a "Girl in the Woods" suggestion to see you clear trees in Michigan. I saw Brooke and said, "Hey, that's the lady on Alone!" We rooted for you but saw you leave the show last night.... Good job! Best shelter so far. Also, Brooke's infomercial was funniest moment in Alone shows we've seen.

A little late to the show, but after binge-watching at least a half dozen Bushradical construction videos and the last episode of Alone - Season 9 (with a Canadian winner, eh!), I just couldn't help myself from squeezing in this last BR video. And I am glad that I did. I had no idea that you were both on an earlier season of Alone. You didn't mention how many days that you lasted in the West Coast Canadian wilderness. Insofar as this vid, enjoyed every second of it, but the "out takes" were the best part, by far! You are two of the most accessible, real people on youtube.

The Soap inclusion is such a great choice. It’s beyond the psychological points they made, as the hygienic aspects of survival are often overlooked as they can’t be addressed. To avoid getting sick is something most contestants don’t think through. Great video!

You guys were cracking me up with the outtakes! You have incredible chemistry together and it comes across on video full force. I admit up front and honest that I most definitely do not have the skills to do Alone. I'm that guy who spent a good chunk of his teens and early twenties "in the woods", mostly as a scout (got every merit badge for wilderness/survival they had back then), and loving every second of it but that was a LOT of years and beers ago. I met a girl (married 30 years, together for 33) who has ZERO interest in getting into the woods and so my time spent there has progressively decreased until now my idea of "getting outside and getting happy" is sitting around my backyard fire pit. Fortunately, and as I've mentioned before, I live in a fairly well wooded area so that's nice but... It's hardly "wilderness survival". Someday I'll get back to it, until then I'll keep watching you guys and enjoy myself vicariously. Thanks for another great video!

Much appreciated explanation for each item. When the show first aired, I thought about what 10 items I would choose. Some were the same as your choices, but the soap was never one of mine. After your explanation, I now agree that the psychological boost you get from washing up is definitely a benefit worth considering. Also, I totally agree with your choice to build the nice shelter, again a major psychological benefit. About the iron skillet, might you not add a bit of iron (ferrous oxide) into your diet if the rust gets mixed into the food? You two really aced the challenge, even if you didn't get the $$. I follow both your channels now.

As you point out your experiences on Alone are unique, few of us will ever do anything like that. I think your take on axes has relevance to anyone who goes into the woods; the size of the axe we take may vary depending on what we plan to do but the point that you don't need what has come to called a boutique axe or hatchet is absolutely spot on.

For those that don't know, cast iron pans need a little more care, but if you apply a thin coat of oil after cleaning they don't rust. I live near the ocean in very humid Florida. BUT cast iron can easily last a lifetime. They are very cheap too. That size in Lodge is only about $15-25 bucks at Wally World in various sizes. And you can easily restore them if they get rusted. Or stainless steel but the good ones are expensive. I have both. But I love being able to scrub cast iron, or a great way to clean cast iron is boiling water in the pan then heat dry and quick rub down with oil soaked paper towel. Cast iron also can be placed on open flame campfire like stainless steel too. One thing for sure, is both are better than teflon in every way. Cast iron is nonstick if you maintain them properly. It's not difficult once you know the techniques. Just my humble opinion. Love this channel. THank you for sharing so much knowledge and experience.

Re-watched this and just recognized, I had forgotten my like. Sorry. Done. I enjoy to listen to your experience, but also to your humour. I am out in nature since my childhood (a thousand years ago ;-) ) and learned so much from my father (or just by doing the most stupid mistakes while doing my tours), but I still learn so much from you. Those choices and why or why not are really helpful and inspiring. When you always do your thing your own way, it can also kind of stuck sometimes - at least in my case. I mean, it will do, but one can always learn and improve. So, thank you very much! I tried a white tarp for example and was utterly surprised. I hadn't minded the green one and found it okay, but in comparaison it made such a difference. Plus also the nutrician part and more. Awesome.

Thanks for sharing the items that you chose to take with you Dave and Brooke. Thank you also for your candid opinion of how each item worked out for you. You are straight up peeps... and I love that. Congrats on 20 years of marriage you guys! Thanks for the incite about using white tarps... I never even thought about this, but looking back at my military career... I can see what you are talking about. .. the OD tents were always so dreary inside. I'm curious as to why a leatherman tool may have been a better choice over the pan. I've tried like crazy to dig and carry stuff with my multi-tool... not having any luck. Thanks for the video guys!

Hey Alan, honestly I don't think i would have missed the pan, and I don't think we would have really been ahead with a Leatherman. 9 items would have been as good as 10. Another pot might have been a good choice though.

Good to see the two of you together on a video. You two make a great team as evidenced by twenty years of marriage. Congratulations on your commitment to each other. Good choice on your survival items, the ax and saw in particular. I've cut up lots and lots and then even more fire wood with the same type of bow saw. Sometimes it is even easier than a chain saw if you get used to handling one. I have noticed, however that good quality, long lasting blades are getting a little harder to find. Thanks for sharing.

This is why I know you guys are for real. Soap. Keeping clean IS Mental Health when your in the woods for extended periods. Having spent 4 months alone on the PCT my little 1lb bar of soap was a weekly vacation from my vacation hint: Keep your soap dry, it'll last longer. I used to just cut off a small piece for a bath and clean my clothes. Coarse sand will keep your cooking stuff clean. I take 3 Knives. A big one, a medium one, and a little one. I have a single bit axe that my grandmother gave me very similar to yours Dave. I have an old Finnsaw folder I've used for processing game and firewood. My whole ruck weighs 25lbs. If you can't find food in the Olympic Peninsula you need to stay home. Great stuff! Thank you to both of you!

Thanks for this! I laughed, too, at the soap... but I knew how important it would be. I spent two summers overseas with Teen Missions, International in Taejon, South Korea and Belize, Central America in the jungle. Working hard and getting clean go hand in hand!
