The Op stories are my fave DH writing. Red Harvest is fave novel. Not that Spade or Charles are weak, just that this nameless protagonist convincingly knows the score and his place in the world.

And he's all business all the time. I've always been impressed with that about him but I didn't remember the part in the first story where he said he went home to sleep and dream of nothing to do with his work. That tells us a.lot in very few words: First, he has a life apart from his work; second, he's telling us nothing about that life; and third, anything aside from the case is NONE OF OUR BUSINESS as far as he's concerned. This is a guy you can turn to for help and he can be counted on to get the job done, will even put his ass on the line for you, but you better respect the conditions of whatever agreement you make with him. And don't try to be friends with him, he'll keep you at a strict distance.

I used to read a lot of novels to my invalid mother when she was still alive so I know it's not easy to read several different characters' voices aloud. I know it's hard and I don't expect a reader to be perfect but I've got to point this out: When a woman is described as remarkably catlike in character and appearance you DON'T give her a mincing and mouselike voice.

It's his name. Dash... whatever it is..hammet. that confuses you with " Sam spade" or Raymond Chandler. Or Philip Marlowe. You end up being your own private eye trying to figure out who is who.
