The Tequila Sunrise - which one is better?

Today I'm making the tequila sunrise...twice! These are two very different cocktails that share the same name. Originally created by Gene Sulit in the late 1930s/early 1940s, the tequila sunrise had crème de cassis and was topped with soda water. It wasn't for another 30 years that we see the orange juice and grenadine concoction we've come to associate with the tequila sunrise today. Now I don't claim to be an expert on this cocktail, but I love comparisons. So getting as close to the original recipes as possible (that includes using store bought grenadine instead of homemade), we'll decide which tequila sunrise comes out on top! Cheers!

DISCLAIMER: Typically I like to test and adjust the recipes I post to the channel, but for this comparison, I wanted to get as close to the original recipes as I could - including using store bought grenadine, which is something I never use. Stick around to the end to see my "doctored up" version of the 1930s/'40s sunrise - and join me over on Instagram as I tweak the 1970s version more to my liking. Cheers, everyone! 🍹 😊

See my comment below on how to drink a layered drink like the Tequila Sunrise. Anders, you need a class on how to drink a cocktail... hint, real men (and women) don't drink a cocktail with a straw, unless its a whipped drink like a daiquiri.

1970s Tequila Sunrise: You really do have to drink the whole thing to see why it's loved. The first sip (with a straw) is too sweet, lulling the tongue into putting down its defenses, until the final sips, now rich in tequila, go down more smoothly. Alternatively, without a straw, you get something simple and hard-hitting, gradually mitigated with grenadine. It's the change in character from start to end that defines this cocktail.

NO Kidding. No one drinks a Tequila Sunrise with a straw!! Any real bartender should know that a layered drink, like a Tequila Sunrise or a Pousse-Cafe, must be sipped, from the top down! The heavily sugared liquor settles to the bottom, so drinking with a straw is ignorant and idiotic. I lived in the Bay Area starting in 77, and frequented the Trident. Made properly, and sipped in the sun as the ice melts, the Tequila Sunrise is a decent drink, dominated by the tequila. It has a place. In fact, skip the grenadine, and use straight up concentrated pomegranate juice, and it is really good. Just adjust the pomegranate juice to taste, and use fresh squeezed OJ. I have been a fan of this channel, but this is the first time you really missed a drink. Remember the early 70s was still rock and roll, and the daiquiri craze in The City didn't start until the late 70s... remember the fern bars, and Henry Africa one block off Lombard and Van Ness. The owner ran three fern bars on the same city block.

70’s Tequila Sunrise - I was very surprised to see you taste a Sunrise with a straw on the bottom. You would only get straight Grenadine. A Tequila Sunrise is sipped over the rim, toss the straw. And as observed above the drink gradually changes as you drink it. The first sip and the final are VERY different things. Love your videos, but tryi it correctly before you declare it a loser. And I am going to have to shop for the 30’s ingredients and try the original, thanks for the intro to something new.
@adde9506
@adde9506 Жыл бұрын
I think no matter whether you like it or not, the 70s version is the definitive owner of the name. Call the original the Tequila Li-lo. Aside from the sipping instructions above, in the 70s this would have been made with "bar orange juice" not sweet freshly squeezed oj. I could explain bar orange juice long-form, but siffice to say it would be alin to using white grapefruit juice vs ruby red.

on the modern tequila sunrise you even can amplify the 'sunrise' effect: fill the glass with orange juice, put in the grenadine (home made of course), let it sink to the bottom and then float the tequila on top, so you have a colour change from red to dark orange to light orange to very light yellow on top. But you absolutely have to stir it before drinking, it's for presentation only.

When you were making the original version, I kept thinking, it could do with a dash of Bitters. I dunno if you have, but when we're allowed to travel again, you should take a trip to Trinidad, my home country, and take a tour of the Angostura factory, it actually is pretty cool. They have a butterfly museum in there lol and a sampling room where you can try a few of Angostura's rums, there's only one Angostura rum that I've never tried, and it's only because it's literally the most expensive rum on the planet, Legacy by Angostura, still on my bucket list.

I always considered the Tequila Sunrise a layered drink, first ice, then pour the heavier specific gravity beverages in, Creme de cassis, grenadine, orange juice, then tequila. It's beautiful because it looks like a sunrise. The drink mixes as you drink it, especially if you stir it occasionally with your straw. I garnish with an orange slice, maybe with a cherry on the bottom for effect.

I'm preparing my cocktail menu for tomorrow's Superbowl LVIII party, SF v. KC repeat of LIV. I select drinks to represent each teams colors. I was reviewing the Tequila Sunrise and the Mexican Firing Squad when I came across your video comparing your El Diablo recipe to the original. Your and Az' improved original Biltmore AZ Tequila Sunrise is almost El Diablo (club soda instead of ginger beer). I plan to try it another time, since I have been drinking cocktails in preparation for tomorrow. Btw, your home made grenadine is much tastier than store bought, but I'm using the latter for the color effect. I always enjoy your videos. They are very clear, with the right amount of backstory, and not too long like some other shows.

I remember Tequila Sunrise from the 1970s and 80s (my high school and college years, roughly). I haven’t heard of the drink for decades. Now I want one, though. But the Sunrise of the 70s was a layered drink, as I remember it. You pour in grenadine syrup, orange juice, and tequila, in that order. You serve it without stirring or shaking any of the ingredients. That’s how you get the “sunrise” effect. (The drinker can stir it or not before downing it, but the layered colors are important to the presentation.) I’d like to try the creme de cassis version, too. The drink I remember having with cassis is kir (if I’m remembering the name right). You put some creme de cassis in the bottom of a wine glass, and then fill it up with white wine. This, too, was a layered drink. It was originally French. Or at least, I was introduced to it by French people.

I have just tried your T.Q 2.0.... A very enjoyable experience!!! It has a adult taste, the Angustura bitter and tequila goes together very well🍸😀 I used a tequila reserva 1800 anejo, when I did my drink.

Great content, my good man! Your home bar setup is #goals. Also let us not forget, the Cypress Hill song Tequila Sunrise from the 1998 album: Cypress Hill IV. Bringing the fantastic beverage to a whole new genre of agave fans.

It is definitely the way to go for any grenadine cocktail, but the issue with TSunrise really isn't using store grenadine. The drink is just one of the most disappointing things one can mix in my experience.

@@trzynasty909 The Tequila Sunrise disappointed me all my life. Then I made one with fresh orange juice, Sangre de Vida Blanco Tequila (expensive, but it was a gift of my brother) and my homemade grenadine. And it was amazing.

I like to cut OJ with Regan's Orange bitters, and club. Now I gotta try angostura. It's a LOT of sweetness to compensate for, so true. I love it though! When the oranges are ripe and sweet you don't have to use much.

Funny enough, Trader Vic printed a version of the classic tequila sunrise in the 1972 version of his Bartender's Guide (must've been right before the newer one took off), which also used a split of cassis and grenadine!

I had to head to Instagram to find the adjusted version, and I’m your 6k follower :). Thanks for the great videos, I’m learning a lot. However, I find most of the Amazon links are no longer available (maybe just not in Canada), so maybe have a revisit.

Great comparison, You could the 70's version is for that crowd that will drink anything. It looks great but is lacking. Maybe not drinking one would be the best thing ?? But I do love what you did to the original. It looks really good.

I wonder if the 70's tequila sunrise used boxed orange juice rather than fresh? I know nothing about the bar the rolling stones were in, but in my mind I think of gritty bars across the US who only had access to minute maid boxed orange juice. That particular brand is much more bitter than fresh orange juice and would probably make a more balance drink.

My favourite new Mezcal cocktail at the moment is a 'Guava Mezcal Mule.', 60mm Mezcal, 60mm Guava juice, 30mm Lime juice, dash Agave syrup, pinch of salt.. shaken then double strained over ice, then top with 60mm ginger beer..Yum!

I know the 1930s recipe as Mexican El Diablo - as a variant you can use Ginger Ale or Tonic Water instead of Soda and lime juice.

The bars I used to work in back in the 90's just poured a little granadine(with speed pourer on), along the inside of the glass at the last stage of building the drink. It was never measured, we eye-balled the drizzle as it was for the "sunrise" effect because we knew that grenadine was overly sweet and would've killed the drink if too much was poured. You may want to do that instead of measuring the grenadine.
