Join us on a new Expedition Universal Studios Florida as we look at the closed history of Terminator 2 3-D: Battle Across Time also known as T2 3D: Battle Across Time. One of the most expensive and impressive 3D shows ever created in a Theme Park until it was closed and replace by a Jason Bourne Stuntacular. Known as the third movie in the Terminator series after Judgement Day it featured the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and was directed by James Cameron

I'm honestly curious what kind of plans they had in place for that show "should something go wrong," like what would happen if someone missed their mark or a gun misfired?

@@marscaleb From the t23d documentary and some interviews, there was an emergency stop button that would be pressed if something went wrong and everyone would go back to their original places, and restart the scene. They also currently do this at the new Jason Bourne Stuntacular, because it broke down a few times when I went recently

Great Video. I was in high school when I went on a family vacation at Disney the early 2000's. We went to all Disney Parks Monday - Thursday and Universal Studios on Friday. We rode Back to the Future first and then saw Terminator 2 3-D next. It blew my mind and immediately made me say we wasted 4 days at Disney and wished we spent every day at Universal. I remember every second of this show. Absolutely great video Sam, keep up the awesome work!

Interesting how it's supposed to be an alternate version of events, yet the attraction itself in the pre-show seems to have it be set after the actual film. The thumbs up moment was even there.

In the "making of" this attraction (which was on one of the T2 DVD's, and was twice as long as the attraction itself), James Cameron said the challenges of 3D was to try to make it feel like you're not poking the audience in the eye all the time, while poking your audience in the eye... This probably was the premier 3D attraction in Orlando until Spiderman came along.

Yes!! One of my favourites of all time. Sad that it went away, especially for something as comparatively irrelevant as the Bourne series. Big loss for Universal. This is awesome! I really loved that attraction and am embarrassed to say that I didn't check it out in Japan when I was there last July. The park was incredibly packed and I don't believe they had a single rider line (at least I didn't see one). I used the single rider line for every attraction I rode that day, minus Backdraft, making the day easier than expected. I am also very glad you mentioned the film ran at 40fps as it was incredibly smooth, and I didn't understand why. Now I do. The 3-D was always top notch. That was the main reason I think I loved it so much as I am a big 3-D buff.

It was SUPER sad to see T2 go, it's a great movie franchise, there's a huge muscular body builder as the star, a Harley Davidson Fatboy and a bunch of my friends as the stunt actors. Universal needs more shows & attractions with live actors and stunt people, it's sad every time they close a show. I'm not a huge Jason Bourne fan, but some of my friends that were at T2 were cast in Bourne so I'm, SUPER excited for them. Loved this episode! Definitely gonna share it with my friends that love Arnold/Terminator. Please if you can do an episode on 2005 HHN Icon the Terra Queen, she needs more than just a house. Her Terra Beast I'm sure will want to stretch out & roam the park so the peasants of Terra Cruentus can bow to her as she wakes from her slumber & take her place on the Terra Throne with her Terra Beast. Waiting for the sacrifices of the pure of heart to be sliced & stabbed with the Terra Blade. Her blood runs into the Gorewood tree to feed your Queen!

I think this was the theme park attraction that had the biggest impact on me as a kid and made me love movies. I really liked watching behind the scenes documentaries and special features on DVDs and came to idolise Stan Winston, whose company built the animatronic effects for movies like Aliens, the Terminator movies and Jurassic Park. T2 3-D: Battle Across Time was one of the earlier theme park attractions to emphasise immersing the viewer in the movie while also adding to the story rather than just going over exactly the same plot as the movie in a compressed way. The combination of live actors with a 3D film and practical in-theatre effects was something that was so ground-breaking at the time, and the fact that it was made with the involvement of the original director and cast made it feel such a part of the franchise.

This was the best experience Universal had when it launched. Even near the end it still offered an amazing experience in Orlando. Getting James Cameron involved and the original cast rather than the original plan using stand-ins made it work well. Having a completely new script made it that much better. Unfortunately, with the Fast the Furious that Universal did later - the concept was not very good and the director had no vision on how to make an immersive experience. Scary as it is, this experience when it co-existed with the Fast and the Furious still blew it away - and it was built nearly 20 years previously. Thanks for this history lesson. The closing in Orlando was amazing!

Even knowing this was a theme park show (and thus no actual danger), I loved that there was a thrill of perceived threat to your safety when the "live" Terminators appear in the theater.

I mean 3D attraction Magic Journeys in 1982 was really good, Then Captain EO took it up a notch with-The action on the screen extended into the audience, including asteroids, lasers, laser impacts, smoke effects, and starfields that filled the theater etc. Opening in the mid 80's as you know first on the 12th of Sept 1986 :-) Then you have this one-T2 3D: Battle Across Time- which combined what Captain EO had then took it up yet another notch by using live action sequences! At least 1 is still survivng in Japan :-)

Thanks for covering this, I went to this show with my dad when I was 10 years old and it was one of the most distinct and cherished parts of my childhood, and your video helped me relive it and remember it since I never got to see it again before it closed. Your video meant a lot to me.

I remember experiencing the show and being scared by the loud noises. I nearly had a heart attack when the seats dropped. In hindsight it was an impressive show.

As a huge Terminator fan...I regret not being able to see this live. Im sure it was amazing, as far as the new Bourne show I guess it's better than Despicable Me...also love how you used the snes game music at the end lol

This was one of my all time favourite Universal attractions. Even if it was starting to show its age when I last saw it in 2014, the level of detail, immersion and atmosphere were in a league of their own. Sadly I missed it due to time when I visited USJ 2 years ago, but I really don't need another excuse to head back out to Japan so fingers crossed it sticks around longer!

I miss this show a lot. It was the first show I ever saw at Universal Studios Hollywood during my first ever visit back in 2004, and my sister and frequently saw the show every time we went in 2012 with our annual passes. I even managed to twist my sister's arm to going with me to go see it one last time on December 16, 2012 (15 days before it closed for good). To this day, I still prefer it over Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem (even though I do like that ride too). I was also fortunate enough to go see the show at Universal Studios Florida back in June 2015 as one of my must-do attractions there. Hearing the audience cheering at the end of the last show on the last day it was open in 2017 brought tears to my eyes 😢💔.

There was going to be a spiritual sequel to this show based on ALIENS. It was cancelled. Can you do a video about that? Goddard group had concept art and the 7 or so disc Alien Anthology Blu-Ray has the complete script. It would’ve taken place after the events of ALIENS and had a new cast but script notes said they wanted Michael B back continuity be damned.

Thanks for the great video! I must’ve rode this 50 times as a kid, and that’s saying something as we only got to go for a few days a year for a few years when I was a kid. Such a good attraction, I was never much for seeing shows more than once but I went to this one a lot. I think I even saw the show before I ever saw the films.

Fantastic look at this attraction Expedition!! With crowds and lines I passed on this for a long time then when I finally saw it (Hollywood) I was completely blown away. The bike coming out then back into the screen was phenomenal! An extremely impressive show!! Super appreciate the work you do bringing these attractions back for us to revisit in someway! Well done!

Did you know Kimberly Duncan does not always die in the show? It happens rarely and I have only seen it happen once where Kimberly survives. I think it is because if the control panel on stage is not working for the Kimberly actress to exit the show, the alternative solution that she'll run out of the auditorium after seeing how insane the situation has become.
