@@Austinn026 also, I just looked, just to see if she did have some ridiculous Patreon tier, and her pricing seems on par with other reaction channels, maybe even less. It's not only fans dude. @@billwithers7457 Now that you mention it, I personally think the title should go to The Godfather Part 2. It was absolutely perfect from a plot perspective, especially when considering its role within the larger story told in the Godfather trilogy. But, yeah, T2 is definitely in the top 3. Though, I would probably knock Spiderman 2 out of the top 3 (while still probably keeping it in the top 5) and put Rocky II up there instead, but that's all a matter of opinion.

Arnold trained with all of the weapons he would use in this movie, forcing himself to disassemble and reassemble them quickly, and ambidextrously. He felt that since he was playing a cyborg, he should be able to do that. The results were worth it. Fun fact, the full sized Terminator skeleton seen at the end of the movie was actually made of steel. Miscommunication with the props department. This was a problem, because much of the film was made without proper permits, and they were filming with a prop that took 4 men to lift. So it was often, get their shot, now split before the cops show up. I look forward to you reaction to Terminator 2, one of the greatest movies ever made.

It's amazing how good this film looks, considering it had a really small budget for something with several complicated makeup, animatronic, and pyrotechnic effects. I guess it makes sense, since this was Cameron's first proper directorial project, and had worked his way to this point as an experienced special effects guy at Roger Corman's studio, where they specialized in low budget genre films, and where Cameron got his first leadership jobs directing second unit for Galaxy of Terror, and directing most of Piranha II: The Spawning.

The effects hold up because they were real things , like the Endoskeleton was a full size model on a guys shoulders. CGI always looks like CGI , no matter how well it is done.
@moviemaestro800
@moviemaestro800 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly disagree. There are plenty of movies out there where the CGI is invisible or too immersive to be distracted by, because that's just how good it is. The problem is that it usually doesn't get the time and money necessary to look that good (cheaper and non-union, unlike practical effects teams), so you have to actually look hard for those, and indeed it is rare in mainstream film. Indeed, the argument that CGI is inherently inferior to practical is only an objective argument, in the sense that practical special effects look more easily like something you can psychically touch onscreen, even if the effect in question is 2D animation. However, I can also point to dozens upon dozens of pre-CGI movies with appalling special effects for the same reason CGI usually doesn't look as convincing today; a lack of time and money. Plus, matting shots from monocolour screens (bluescreen or greenscreen) is about as old an effect as movies themselves, and that technology absolutely has trended better in quality over time. It's basically an argument from cherry picking, either way, to even attempt to say that today's special effects are overall worse or better, objectively. An example I can even point to is some of this movie's own effects shots. The stop-motion animated endoskeleton shots, and the silicone Terminator faces, are pretty obvious even for the time, but that's okay, since this movie only had so much money to make the best possible versions of those effects. Conversely, the CGI in movies like The Lord of the Rings, and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies still looks pretty amazing, even today, after 15-20 years. Heck! The CGI in T2 is another great example, and that movie is over 30 years old! Some of it, much like the stop motion and silicone faces in this movie, does look pretty cheesy now, but a lot of it still looks amazing, even to this day, and is indeed better than most CGI that happens more commonly in blockbusters. The problem isn't the tools used for special effects. It's how they're used, and for how much time and funding to utilize the craft within.

Just to clarify, there were no "graphics" at this time because computers were just beginning to be understood by the public. The robot form of the terminator was a made with stop motion photography. Essentially a model of the robot was photographed, moved slightly, photographed again, moved/repositioned again etc, etc. All of those photographs were then spliced together to create footage of the robot walking/attacking etc. Thats how it was done back then. It was time consuming and expensive and almost always looked a little less fluid than reality, but it was all they had before CGI became a thing.

Michael Biehn played both Kyle Reese in "The Terminator" and Dwayne Hicks in "Aliens". That's why he was familiar to you. James Cameron cast him in "The Abyss" as well where he plays Lt. Coffey. The most romantic detail is that Sarah was thinking of Kyle at the moment her picture was taken. It is that very picture John Connor gives to Kyle in the future that causes him to fall in love with Sarah. Kyle always wondered what thoughts were behind her sadness in the shot and, it turns out, she was reminiscing about her brief time with him.

I strongly suspect Terminator was inspired by a story I read as a teen back in the early 80s. It was a book of short stories called something like 'Stories from the Golden Age of Science Fiction'. There was one story about a man who goes on a hunting trip deep in the forests of North America. He comes across a remote, unexplored canyon. In it he finds loads of large animals, deer, mountain lions, etc strung up, similar to a game keepers gibbet. Some of them are from the ice age and even the time of the dinosaurs. When he looks closer he can see their eyes blink and he realises that somehow they are all still alive but paralysed. At that moment some kind of robotic machine suddenly appears. It stops, looks at him then a needle appears and it heads towards him! He shoots at it but his bullets do nothing even at point blank range. It turns out the robot has been left by an alien exploration team to collect specimens, however for some reason they never come back to retrieve it, so it just keeps collecting specimens. The man will be it's next one. He runs and quickly outpaces it, then relaxes thinking he's safe. However it's been tracking him and turns up again. The man tries everything to shake it off. He swims a river, climbs a cliff but it just keeps coming. At one point he nearly runs into a Grizzley bear, the bear then attacks the robot but is quickly sliced apart. The man manages to set off a landslide burying the machine and thinks finally he's safe. Then sees the rocks move. He runs again and tries everything he can think of but the machine just keeps on coming. It unstoppable and invulnerable. Finally he collapses from dehydration and exhaustion. In despair he knows there's nothing he can do and that he'll become another parlysed victim on the gibbet. The machine trundles up and he's too weak to even crawl. It picks him up, the needle comes out and then suddenly it drops him and goes off. It turns out the machine was only collecting specimens within a certain weight catagory and he's sweated so much during the course of the chase that he's dropped fractionally below the bottom weight limit, so now that he's outside the correct parameters it's no longer interested in him. Anyway it was a cool story which stuck in my mind and then a couple of years later Terminator came out. The overall story is very different but the idea of the relentless, unstoppable machine chasing down the hero is exactly the same. P.S. Now you need to watch Terminator 2 or Predator, another classic Arnie film from the same period. Back in the day we used to watch the Terminator and Predator films back-to-back.

@@39Hundred The book was a collection of short stories from US science fiction magazines from the 30s-50s like 'Amazing Stories', 'Fantastic Stories', Astounding Stories' etc. I remember it had a predominantly yellowish cover and I think (but could be wrong) it showed a landscape with the smallish figure of a man. I did an image search but couldn't see one I recognised, but it was nearly 40 years ago and there there may be reprints/US versions with different covers. Sorry that's a bit vague. Fun fact: In his youth, Arnie was a tank driver in the Austrian army, so it's only fitting that he's playing a walking tank. 4:03 Honest Trailers describes Michael Biehn as "the grease-painted soldier in all your favorite movies." 9:50 Notice how he introduces himself - even to a civilian - with his name, rank, and serial number. Drives home the idea that his whole life is consumed by war. 11:08 There were weapons in 1984 that could down a Terminator, but they would have been hard to acquire. We're talkin' 40mm grenade launchers and .50 caliber anti-material rifles (both of which are seen in the later movies). 14:01 In T2, we find out that Terminators do feel pain, but they interpret it in a mundane way (merely as diagnostic information). 24:51 Here's something that'll bake yer noodle: Both John Connor and Skynet are products of a time paradox. If neither Reese nor the Terminator had gone back in time, no John Connor and no Skynet.

Thank you for appreciating how well Arnold Schwarzenegger played an emotionless robot! It goes unnoticed by most people, at least until they get to the sequels after T2 and start seeing actors who can't act emotionless. You should 100% watch Terminator 2: Judgment Day :) Other Schwarzenegger movies I'd recommend are Predator (the original from 1987, NOT The Predator from 2018), Kindergarten Cop (1990), Total Recall (1990), and True Lies (1994). Predator is more sci-fi action/horror similar to Terminator or Alien/Aliens, Kindergarten Cop is a pretty lighthearted movie that was Schwarzenegger's favorite to work on, and Total Recall and True Lies are both wonderful action/adventure movies that also mix in cheesy comedy.

The first Terminator movie is pretty much a low-budget “gun horror” movie that, against both odds and expectations, became a hit. It was the second movie that was designed to be a blockbuster from the beginning. Besides the writer/director (James Cameron) and the three main stars (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Michael Biehn) there are at least a half-dozen people who got major boosts to their careers from this movie.
