A playthrough of Mindscape's 1992 license-based action game for the Super Nintendo, The Terminator.
The Terminator was one of the most bad-ass action movies ever made, and the license seems like a perfect fit for any number of excellent action video games to be based on. However, as with most movie licenses, history has shown us time and time again that a good license alone does not a good game make.
Games based on The Terminator have been hit-or-miss in their quality for decades now, but at the very least, this SNES adaptation of the 1984 film classic is a servicable adaptation. Thankfully, Mindscape contracted development of this one with Gray Matter, and while GM were hardly known for AAA work, their output was a huge step above stuff from Radical, the producers of the absolutely wretched NES Terminator game.
This run-and-gun SNES title put you in the shoes of Kyle Reese and tasks you with stages based on events from the film. You begin in the future, wading through seas of various killer cyborgs and androids before heading back into the past where you'll shoot through various familiar locales trying to find and protect Sarah Connor from her would-be assassin.
The shooter stages are pretty rudimentary but they get the job done. Though most are linear, left-to-right Contra-style affairs, the second stage is an open-ended exploratory level that quickly frustrates thanks to a ton of blind jumps and a gauntlet of rooftop helicopter battles: it's annoying that the worst level in the game appears so early on, because once you get past it, the game improves a great deal. The shooting and jumping work as you expect (though the screen is a bit too zoomed in to be able to see incoming attacks well), and it's pretty forgiving in its difficulty despite not giving you any continues. I loved the police station level, if for no other reason than it was hilarious to hear Kyle scream, "Sarah!" every time he opens a door.
The driving stages are pretty good, too. There are only two of them and they're short, but they look good and they control well. Too bad we didn't get a couple more of those thrown into the mix!
The presentation could've used a bit more work though. The digitized photos look great, though in what is probably a huge oversight, you can see all of the cutscenes by just letting the intro demo run over and over. I can't think of any other game that will let you see the ending without ever touching a single button.
The in-game graphics are all super dark and murky, making the stages look pretty dreary and dull, and the music is drowned out by some of the worst sound effects I've heard in a SNES game. Seriously, why is everything accompanied by a loud boing?
Overall what we have here is a flawed but still perfectly playable game, making The Terminator on the SNES a solid "not bad" choice for movie-based games.

I imagine that in '92, the Terminator2 license would have cost a fortune and the first movie license very little in comparison.

Didn't realize you needed a separate license for either film, but perhaps makes a slight bit of sense in that case. Funny with how the first movie didn't even get games and stuff made for it, and that it's existence wasn't quite fully acknowledged until T2 came around, which was put that franchise on the map as well! (L.O.L.!)

I remember playing this game and not even making it past the first level just because it felt like it was endlessly looping. I thought for sure that was the entire game. Watching this, it seems like that aspect never really improves. This could also be the worst music I've ever heard out of the SNES.

The NES Terminator game might have been utter garbage, but the SNES one thankfully fares quite a bit better. It's no masterpiece, but it is a fun, if short and easy, way to play the movie.
@dariogonzalez8989
@dariogonzalez8989 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know if "short and easy" would be a good way to describe the first two levels. Seriously, they're so long and repetitive that they ruin the entire experience! I wish they were either shorter, or divided into 2 or more levels each, in order to make them more bearable and for the players to feel like they're making at least _some_ progress. Also, that whole "stop the player from running and practically force them to take hits" during the helicopter battles can eat my ass.

It's only a little better than the NES version. Honestly, this version sucks too. If the subpar soundtrack doesn't get you to shut the game off, then the sheer length of the first two levels will. And it's not like they're any fun to begin with. They're incredibly boring.

Kyle Reese's jump makes the same sound as the laser guns in the future. I know he came back in time to prevent the T-800 from changing the past, but what effect do you think he'll have on the future by going around Los Angeles circa 1984 and mowing down countless gun toting human thugs and attack helicopters?

Did anyone Laughed at 18:51 when Kyle screams "SARAH"? Lmaooo I have this game on my SNES emulator and for a moment I thought it was a Beta unreleased game considering the low quality sound and simplistic game mechanics. That was until I researched the game and this vid popped up and now I see it, the cut scenes were pretty good and really the "Sarah" scream was unexpected, but I wonder if they made this game just to have game movie continuity since it seems it was close to T2 film's release that the game was made. Oh well, at least I can get a good laugh out of it and still enjoy it.

How many times will the Terminator film franchise need a reboot before the storyline becomes canon; I am still upset that the Sarah Conner Chronicles tv series ended ?! Also , this version of the Terminator film video game is not at all similar to the original film; plus, why is there a weird noise when Kyle Reese makes a jump !?

If you haven't done so already you should try the Sega CD Terminator game. That one's a real riot. Plus it has Tommy Tallirico's jamming soundtrack to boot. Virgin did that one as well as the short but sweet Genesis version. Yeah shame the NES one sucked as bad as it did, we could've got a good Terminator game had Sunsoft retained the license. Pretty much, since the SNES was the more powerful console, which was capable of doing stuff better than the Genesis ever could. Even the Sega CD's capabilities were at best a modest improvement for the most part (but still couldn't do some stuff which the Super NES could), despite having CD based hardware to work with on that system.

Funny with how every original Terminator game had Reese shooting/killing punks (and even sometimes cops), when he went back to the past levels like a homicidal madman! That being even if they tried to to murder him in the games first for no apparent reason(s) other than just to be dicks (save for when the punks didn't fight back in the NES Terminator game), which I'm pretty sure never happened in the movie as far as I know! That of which was also counterproductive to his mission, when he was supposed to PROTECT humanity, not do any further harm to it last I checked! (L.O.L.!) Even the evil Terminator (despite being a literal killing machine) didn't do that for shits & giggles, and only would if they of course got in his way, and impeded his mission somehow. The only real exception to that was when he killed the wrong Sarah Connors, but only happened due to his lack of knowledge as to which one was supposed to be the real target. As much as the Nintendo versions of these games tend to get a bad rap (and rightfully so), at least they had something the Sega ones didn't, which was driving stages like in the film though.
