Wow! To see such a beautiful hive only to have mold rob it of it's splendor.
Even though we never saw the queen, now that the bees are in the new hive, I know she is in there because of the brood we found. And still, I never saw her. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

I for one like the drive to the location. Your towns are entirely different than anything I have seen in Canada. Given people have been in Louisiana longer than people have been in Canada it is no wonder....yet still what a wonder. I watch most videos on 1.5 or faster as I am a data consuming machine but the drive.... I take that at regular and stopped to look at some buildings. Although at this 'time' it looks run down at some 'time' some one made huge investment in building three story brick buildings. It was a different 'time' when the towns were built and now 'times' have changed but the town has not. thanks again for showing us your world.

As we never used any of the comb when reestablishing these bees, mites are not going to be an issue. Because our winters here in Louisiana are so mild, and because the number of bees in the hive is greatly reduced, I have experienced mold in hives before. The advice I've seen from many beekeepers about moldy/mildew is to feed it to a stromg colony. The bees clean it up and most molds that grow on honeycomb is harmless to humans and bees, (I heard it does taste gross though). Hello Jeff, loved the video, keep on making more. lol. I have a question about your vertical splits. In January, when you rotate your hives, your queen will be in the bottom box now. Then around mid March she has moved back up and laying in the top box, then you put a double screen divider board between the two boxes, all the field bees will return and go to the bottom box. My question is, how does the bottom box raise a queen if there are no eggs in there box? I know they will be bringing in stores to the bottom box but I haven't figured out how they raise a queen without 1 or 2 day old eggs to raise a queen. Help me understand. Thanks Brother and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Жыл бұрын
Before inserting the double screened dividing board, you have to make sure there is brood young enough in the bottom box to ensure the bees will be able to make a new queen. For sure, but I'm sure there was rain water getting into this hive, and when that happens, it's almost impossible for the bees to regulate air flow. Thanks for watching. God's peace Susan. Mr. Ed

Send that old moldy comb to me. My bees are tougher than those old Louisiana trailer trash bees. Mine will scrape off the mold and use it to paint the landing board.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Жыл бұрын
Your bees have to be tougher than most other beekeeper's bees, they are lucky their hive doesn't fall down around them. Heck, the only thing that is keeping most of them together is they have built comb to support the rotting material. And as far as them using the mold to paint the landing board, there is no wood there for them to paint. Still, they do make some awesome honey. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Packed out! That ain't mold, its white wash. Them are fashion minded girls. Bees don't mind it in my experience. They will clean it up.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Жыл бұрын
Because rain water was constantly getting into the camper and consequently in the hive, these bees would, now have never been able to clean it up inside the camper. However, now that they have all that new comb, they won't have to worry about cleaning it up. Great hearing from you Tadd. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Good idea NOT to take the honey for human consumption. There are mold spores that are NOT visible on the rest of the comb, for sure!!

I totally agree. I'm not the smartest of bee wranglers, but I do know it is very hard to detect mold spores and it's always best to be safe.
