Energy density is just ONE of several important metrics by which a battery is chosen for a particular purpose. Charge/discharge rates, cycle life, temperature range and shock resistance are also necessary to consider, and all are in conflict with each other. Focusing on energy density to pick a battery is like choosing a new car based only on horsepower.
@leoleydekkers7024
@leoleydekkers7024 9 ай бұрын
Gravimetric density is not the only metric by which cells are measured. You have to consider volumetric density as well. The 4680 cell has a volume of 0.133dm³ (litres). This gives it a volumetric density of 614Wh/l. The 2170 cell is way higher than this too
@MindFieldMusic
@MindFieldMusic 9 ай бұрын
4680s are for the structural pack, so it's important to look at pack-level energy density and not just cell-level. Cheers:)

The Tesla Space: Range doesn't matter as much as people says it does. Oh really? I just drove from Houston to San Antonio, went to Fiesta Texas, Natural Bridge Caverns and Drove around Downtown and went BACK to HOUSTON. 480 miles ALL ON ONE TANK OF GAS costing $35. Thank you Honda Civic. Don't tell me range doesn't matter.

It’s not a good comparison to compare a brand new 4160 cell to a tried and true panasonic cell. They are definitely going to be limiting the new 4160 while it undergoes fleet testing. As the battery design is refined, it will gain in energy density. Meanwhile the 2170 isn’t going to gain much in energy density. The design is already optimal. And there is another point to this whole thing that you are completely missing. The 4160 cell is adding to the struxtural strength of the vehicle while the 2170s are decreasing the strength of the structure (they have to be carried). The way to think of this is that the 4160 is displacing some amount of steel that would otherwise need to be used in the frame. Think of this: start with a base car frame, now add 2170s. The additional load requires you to bring additional steel on the frame to hold the batteries. Now to move that additional steel, you need more batteries. So then you have to add more steel to support the additional batteries. It goes on and on like this until it reaches an equilibrium between number of batteries to carry and amount of extra steel to carry. Now think of the 4160. You start with a base car. Then you add batteries to the frame. That made the frame stronger and you don’t have to carry as much steel. And removing the steel means you don’t need as many batteries, etc., until equilibrium. There is a positive feedback mechanism to structural batteries. So you have to consider the weight of the steel you are replacing and how that weight reduction further reduces the number of batteries you need to get the same range. This additional efficiency IS NOT calculated in the energy density equation. So this is not a good way to benchmark a structural battery. The announcement on battery day that the battery is structural is honestly the biggest announcement they made… but for some reason it is so completely misunderstood by youtubers and media.
@TheNativeTwo
@TheNativeTwo 9 ай бұрын
I realize i am making this complicated so let me try to give a sinple answer. Let’s look at planes. Lets say there is a jet fuel, type A, that has to be carried in an external tank. And another jet fuel, type B, that can be carried in the wing of the plane. Jet fuel A has more energy per mass, ie., has a higher energy density, than type B. You would pick type A fuel, right? Higher energy density is always better right? Well, does the type A fuel have a higher energy density if you add the weight of the tank? How about the lower aerodynamics of the tanks? How about the extra steel to support the tanks and the extra fuel you have to carry to support the extra steel? After considering all that, you may still pick the type B fuel with lower energy density, and store the fuel in the wing.
@RNA0ROGER

Structural battery is a large portion of what was talked about on battery day. That being said I am curious just in percentage from 0 to 100 where exactly 4680 is from what was promised on battery day? We have form factor and I understand partly dry cell chemistry but what else is left on the table.
@TheNativeTwo
@TheNativeTwo 9 ай бұрын
@@RNA0ROGER yeah we don’t really know. It would be nice if someone could ask Elon for an update on their progress towards realizing the goals of battery day. All we have right now are people doing their own experiments and making assumptions. Even if you can measure the energy density directly and bypass software limitations, you still don’t know how much steel is being displaced in the frame by making it structural. And it’s going to be difficult to measure the impact of the structural cell without being tesla. It’s going to affect the design of the frame and car and the manufacturability. How many less robots are needed to make the structural packs vs non-structural, etc. So energy density alone isn’t an apples to apples comparison to a typical battery cell.

Larger format batteries have their upsides, winding is a super fast process so you pull together your webs with the nmc on its current collector (usually both sides) the graphite on its current collector (again, usually both sides), and the separator, wind that, cut, shove into the can, fill, seal, and send off for formation. Winding a larger cell doesn't really take much longer than winding a smaller one. At least for what I have worked with....

A standard AA battery has the same dimensions as a 14500 so you can get a better idea of the relative size in your head. Whatever the reason for the naming scheme of the 4680 battery I am going to assume it is 46mm wide and 800mm long. A 46 x 80mm battery would look like a chubby coin cell.

We are a very long time away from roads that charge cars. The cost to replace roads and the time required would be astronomically prohitive. That's before you figure the cost to get electrical power to miles of highway. As of 2016 production of a 4-lane highway, the cost per mile will run between $4 and $6 million in rural or suburban areas, and between $8 to $10 million in urban areas. That's the standard highway of today no charging infrastructure included. And it would be years to replace enough highway to have any realistic effect. We should see charging mats for home and charging stalls for charging stations coming long before road charging.
