The battle of Grunwald, the first battle of Tannenberg or the battle of Žalgiris was fought on July 15, 1410. During the Polish-Lithuanian-Teutonic war. The Alliance of the Polish Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, headed by King Władysław II Jagiełło and Grand Duke Witold, respectively, defeated the German-Prussian Teutonic Knights under the leadership of Grand Master Ulrich von Jungingen. Most of the Teutonic leaders were killed or taken prisoner. The Teutonic Knights, though defeated, survived the siege of their fortress in Marienburg (Malbork) and suffered minimal territorial losses in the Room of Thorns (1411) (Toruń), and other territorial disputes continued until the Melno Peace in 1422, but they will never regain their former power, and the financial burden of war reparations caused internal conflicts and economic downturn in the lands under their control. The battle shifted the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe and marked the emergence of the Polish-Lithuanian Union as the dominant political and military force in the region.
The battle was one of the largest in medieval Europe and is considered the most important victory in the history of Poland and Lithuania, and is also widely celebrated in Belarus. It was used as a source of romantic legends and national pride, becoming a larger symbol of the fight against foreign invaders. In the 20th century, the battle was used in Nazi and Soviet propaganda campaigns. It is only in recent decades that historians have moved towards a dispassionate, scientific assessment of the battle, reconciling previous narratives that varied considerably from one country to another.
The Battle of Grunwald (Poland: The Battle of Grunwald) or the Battle of Zalgiris (Lithuanian: Žalgirio mūšis) or the First Battle of Tannenberg (English: Battle of Tannenberg) was a Teutonic battle by allies of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania. .
The Teutonic Knights is a Polish film from 1960 directed by Alexander Ford based on the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz of the same name.
The plot is located in Poland from the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century and focuses on the Polish-Lithuanian-Teutonic war and the final battle of Grunwald. 15,000 extras were used to create battle scenes. The film attracted crowds of cinema viewers and remains one of the most watched films in Polish history: it sold 2 million tickets in a few months, 14 million after four years, and since 1987 it had about 32,315,695 tickets. He was also exported to forty-six foreign countries and sold 29.6 million tickets in the Soviet Union and 2,650,700 in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. It was a Polish application for the 33rd Oscar.
It was released on July 15, 1960, on the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald.
He writes and translates into several languages: Joachim Moczko

One of the most legendary battles in history. Although I am German and I know that my country and Poland have not always been best friends, I have great respect for Polish people and their history and I hope that there will never be another war between our two states.

A lot of Czechs (and Moravians) fought in this battle on the both sides, but way more on the polish side (formed up to two full banners), led by Jan Sokol z Lamberka and probably famous czech hussite general Jan Žižka took part in the battle. Greetings from Czech republic.

My favorite part of this whole sequence is when the cavalry engagement starts; the Germans begin to sing “Christ ist erstanden” and the Poles watch them close in singing “Bogurodzica.” It reminds me a lot of Zulu, the movie that got me into history to begin with. The Zulus close in on the British and charge singing their own song while the British sing “Men of Harlech” back at them in defiance.

@@plrc4593 Yes, true. Since the end of 19th century we have both been constantly struggling with either Russian or Western imperialism fueled by different ideologies. Communism, nazism and today globalism. Poles have always displayed strenght of character though, always fighting and even surviving years behind the Iron Curtain and coming out of it as winners and remaining sane. Today in many ways Poland has things much better than much of the so called Western Europe. Far less forced third world immigration = less crime and unrest affecting ordinary people. Also people generally speaking seem more in tune with realities of life and have a healthier world view than their western counter parts. But that's enough politics for now! I was little child when I saw this movie in cinema hall, in Bucharest, Romania. After we got out from the movie, when I learned that the armor was so heavy that the fallen horsemen could not rise on their own, I asked my mother: "Why they did not use armor made of aluminum? It is not so heavy! " My mother answered: "Because the aluminum is softer than steel, it cannot withstand blows." Fun fact: Aluminum alloys got available only 450 years after the Battle of Grunwald/Tannenberg.

Wow!! What a scene! Can't believe it was shot in 1960! There's nothing like real horses, actors, landscapes to make a movie feel real and convey real emotions to spectators. Today, it's all about special effects... We don't make movies like these anymore. It's great to see these knights from two European kingdoms. But today, unlike what is portrayed in this historical movie, and instead of bickering against one another, it's more than ever the right time to unite.

@@karolinakuc4783 Thank you for your reply. Every faith, belief and places of employment has had it's extremes of good and evil. Nurses, teachers, police, we can only hope lessons are learned from those who say they are leaders and to those who support them. The strength of a leader is maybe possibly tested by how well they care for the vulnerable or how well they learn to care and protect them. How evolved they are is possible how well they can hold their belief and not be threatened by another opposing view, even if that other holding the opposing view finds them a threat. Strong enough to not want to create a barrier of division wise enough to share and compare their information. I don't know what's the truth, I'm lost like most of us. Every one has their own version of truth and evil has been done in most circles. We are all capable of evil actions but we are all capable of making good choices also. Power isn't evil only how it's used. Thank you again my friend.

Polish history is soaked in blood; so much slaughter happened there and somehow the Poles survived and endured. And among many tragic low points there are many brilliant moments which include saving Europe from the Turks at Vienna. I’m proud of my Polish great-grandfather Joszef Wojtowicz…greetings from America.

Ironically, actors who played King of Poland Władysław Jagiełło and Grand Master of Teutonic Order Ulrich von Jungingen were both born to Polish families on the territory of former Grand Duchy of Lithuania: Stanisław Jasiukiewicz (Grand Master) was born in Postawy (now Pastavy, Belarus), while Emil Karewicz (the King) was born in Wilno (now capital of Lithuania). Karewicz died in 2020 at the age of 97, while Jasiukiewicz died in 1973 at 52. Both were acting legends in their own right.

I'm gonna tell you something... I'm blowing my own horn, but almost thirty years ago, in 1992, we worked on the movie, "Gettysburg". They had probably about half, of the extras, these guys did? I was down there for a week, in August, in the heat, to help do something historic. My kepi, is off to these people, for making an epic film 📽️🎥.

W latach 1974-1978 podczas semestru zimowego i częściowo wiosennego spędzałem niemal każdy weekend w Stadzie Ogierów w Starogardzie Gdańskiem.
