My dog can confirm their tails do, in fact, fall off.

I've been feeding a wild one daily that has made my patio its home. Love that thing. Truly a free range pet

They like to dig themselves under the dirt and sleep there! I thought mine died because it was apparently gone for weeks. Suddenly one day it was again just sitting chilling inside it's cage. It has been under the dirt for weeks. Didn't know they do that!

I just found one here in South Mississippi this morning on our window. So is this the Texas version of the spiny lizard and are there other types of spiny lizards?
@senseiinthewild324110 ай бұрын
Great question! There are actually dozens of different kind of spiny lizards all across America. There are even more than 10 different types just in Texas! If you get a chance to photo one, it might help with identifying exactly which species it is. Thanks!

I just got one 5 days ago. She ate pretty nicely the first day, but she seems really scared and doesn’t want to be touched or handled at all. Suddenly stopped wanting to eat… kinda worried at this point. She’s well kept, her enclosure is exactly as her habitat provides with space, heat and all. Any pointers?
@senseiinthewild32413 ай бұрын
Wild lizards can take a while to adjust to new environments. It might take rotating several different food rotations to find one that she’ll consistently eat. Also, are you monitoring the humidity levels? That’s a huge consideration for most reptiles. Hope this helps!
@Oz__MTG3 ай бұрын
@@senseiinthewild3241 I believe the humidity levels is something I should consider checking into again. I did check the first time I placed her. I’m worried about her health for sure. Thanks for the response, I’ll have to look into a better way to have her feel safe.

One just ran inside my home. I had to call my neighbor to help me get rid of it. Don't worry we didn't kill it.

Use a Plastic Bottle cut the top off and insert the lid upside down. Place some bait in the bottle and set it on the ground. When the lizard climbs inside it will get stuck .

Yes, they do drop their tails. Scared a big one with a lawnmower accidentally, and unfortunately it dropped its tail.

@senseiinthewild3241 Жыл бұрын
Texas spiny lizards require a diet of live insects, and will thrive if you provide them with a variety of species. Giant mealworms, crickets, regular mealworms, silkworms, and non-noxious caterpillars are all great choices. Thanks for watching, and keep it wild!

@@cadenhunt9076 it takes them a while to get used to you. With the food you might have to give them live food. Try mealworms. Make sure you put it in a container where they can eat it.

@cadenhunt9076 They only eat live pray. Nothing dead. Their food needs to crawl around in order for them to sense it i guess!

Any tips on how to catch them
@senseiinthewild32412 жыл бұрын
Great question. Speed and evasion are their best weapons, so I'd recommend getting a friend to help you catch one. They usually run to high ground and flee up a tree when threatened. They're fairly large, so you might be able to use a net. For me, I've always used my bare hands. The best way is for you and a friend to corner one and then just grab it. I know it's not very technical, but this is how I've always done it. Hope it helps!

Be fast lol they aren’t easy to catch. Usually the best way is to sneak up on them on a tree. On the ground I don’t think any human can catch them when they run. They are small and can go under bushes or up trees in a blink. The only reason I’m here commenting is I managed to catch one. But not in the conventional way. Since it’s February here the weather is still cold and when I went outside there was this huge one sitting on the brick column. When I say big I can honestly say while I’ve seen this size spiny lizard I have never managed to catch one. Since she had not warmed up. I was literally able to pick her up with no resistance. I brought her inside for a while just to make sure she’s actually OK and sure enough within a few minutes of warming up inside she had enough of me holding her and was ready to get away. These are very hearty lizards although I’d feel bad about keeping her as a pet. I’m just guessing it’s a female since they tend to be larger than males, I believe. When I say she’s big She fat, well fed, longer than my hand head to tail. Definitely don’t get much bigger than this
