Nothing like Carol today, that's for sure. I don't think casting directors on the stage, would know what to make of her or what to do with her. They are too prosaic. Just put characters like this on the stage and the audience will figure it. Nobody takes their eyes off a Carol Channing for long. Nobody fails to find their smile and good humor before she is done.

It was so unfair that Streisand was chosen for the movie role!
@rgs62365 жыл бұрын
Kathleen Nesbitt it wasn't unfair because BS was fantastic in it. Carol was to old for the part by then. I was born in 1962 by then Channing was already 41....

@@rgs6236 Do you even know the story? Dolly Gallagher Levi: A widow in her middle years who has decided to begin her life again. She is a matchmaker, meddler, opportunist, and a life-loving woman. Horace Vandergelder: The proprietor of a Hay & Feed store and a client of Dolly Gallagher Levi's.

@@rgs6236 Additionally, Bernadette Peters has played the role for several of the past years, and Bette Midler (b. 1945) has returned to play the role. Your argument does not hold up.

Interesting to know "Dolly" was originally offered to Ethel Merman who turned it down 1964, but David Merrick convinced her to play the last year and a half on Broadway. So, who was better, Channing or Merman? I think it's a tie.

She's not, any more than 1930s Hollywood actresses Constance, Joan and Barbara Bennett (or Barbara's son, the late TV talk show host Morton Downey Jr), were black. The maternal grandfather of the Bennett sisters was famed 19th century stage actor Lewis Morrison, a performer of English, Spanish, Jewish, and African ancestry. Lewis Morrison, who served as a lieutenant in the Confederate Army in an all-black regiment during the Civil War, was born in Jamaica and raised in Louisiana. Morrison and his progeny all looked and lived their lives in America as white people, as has Carol Channing. There are plenty of white people with distant African ancestry throughout the Americas who've lived the same way. By the same token, there are multimillions of black people throughout the Americas with distant and not so distant European ancestry who nobody thinks of as white.
@humbleharry38715 жыл бұрын
@@anonymousgirl799 I'm aware that Channing's revelation about her father's alleged African ancestry came from her memoir, "Just Lucky I Guess." My point is, Carol Channing lived her life as a white woman, just like multimillions of black people with distant European ancestry still live their lives as black people, and all that that entails.
@jordan844 жыл бұрын
She is white with some black ancestry. She lived her life as a white woman. Was treated as a white woman. Looks like a regular white woman.
@erickanew4 жыл бұрын
@@jordan84 nah, she looks like she's got some black in her. & Hollywood knew that's why they gave her roles to white women. There's a lot of white looking black people, I have some in my family but a lot of people can tell especially old white people

Too bad her ego won't allow her to tell the truth about why she wasn't cast in the movie versions of her biggest hits. She claims Marilyn saw her do "Blondes" on Broadway repeatedly, and copied her performance. She didn't do either. And, she claims that Streisand conspired with agent Sue Menger to get Dolly away from her. That's crap too. Producer Ernest Lehman felt Carol was too over-the-top and weird for audiences to accept in a two-hour plus musical. Lehman had to beg Barbra to do it several times before she agreed. I got that directly from Lehman when I interviewed him. Carol didn't have what it takes to be a movie star and she's very bitter about it. She did get an Oscar nomination for Throughly Modern Millie, but that was a showy, relatively small part. She's also lying about seeing Dolly for the first time a plane. She was at the premiere in New York. I know because I was too.

Why shouldn't she be mad about not being chosen? She had everything to be great on the silver screen, just like Merman.

She gives a piece of herself to every performance, and its justified that she feel some ownership of those roles in particular. This is an enduring and endearing performer to who earned a legacy that includes these two iconic roles.
