The Theme Park History of Backdraft (Universal Studios Hollywood/Universal Studios Japan)

Backdraft is a fire special effects show that opened at Universal Studios Hollywood on July 1st, 1992 and Universal Studios Japan on March 31st, 2001. Based on the film of the same name, the show teaches guests about how the pyrotechnic effects for the film were created and experience some of them first hand. In this episode we explore the opening of Universal Studios Hollywood’s Lower Lot in 1991 and the addition of Backdraft attraction, the construction and precautions required for the special fire effects, the show itself and the closure of the Hollywood attraction in 2010.

Many years ago when my dad was still alive, he took me to Universal Studios for my birthday when I was really young. We spent most of the day on the lower lot just going on Jurassic Park and ET over and over again. We were so drenched by the end of the day, we'd go to Backdraft to dry off within minutes. It was THAT hot inside. So many great memories with this one!

Nostalgia! I remember being a kid and this ride/show was easily the scariest thing at the park. I would be terrified when my mom wanted to go. Thanks for the good post as always

The soundstage That held BACKDRAFT might have been a half- million CUBIC foot soundstage, Jack, but the largest soundstage at Universal Studios (the one they film THE VOICE at (and where they filmed Jurassic Park) is only 65 Thousand square feet...Soundstage 30 was closer to 25 thousand Square feet, still pretty big, but nowhere near a half- million square feet! (That would be the size of your average shopping mall!)

Thank you so much for finally doing this! I went on this “ride” when I was a very young child and it terrified me for many years. My family took quite a few vacations to Universal Studios Hollywood over the next decade, I’d say 4 or 5. Every time I refused to do the ride because it terrified me. Finally when I was 14 I conquered my fear and finally went through it again. I was very proud of myself for that and because of this, the backdraft experiences will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you again for finally doing this!

I heard about this attraction in a documentary about the math in making theme park attractions and shows that I watched in middle school. I remember it going into all the science and engineering that made backdraft.

Thanks for sharing this!!! I was one of the original Studio Guides that transitioned to Backdraft Hosts when it first opened. I remember doing up to 10 tours a day which got pretty hot before they put up the blast shield in front of the Ops panel we had to stand at in the last scene. When it first opened, the MANY sensors designed to keep everyone safe were a little TOO sensitive so it was always shutting down causing us to do a full evacuation of the entire building until they could reset everything. Still one of my favorite attractions to have been a part of over the years!

I liked the pre-show, was surprised to hear others thought it was boring. I don’t think you mentioned it, but one of the pre-show rooms (I think the second) had a bit where this swirling fire rose up from a table in the middle of the room. I was a kid, but I thought it was really cool.

Wow--personally, being from around the Orlando area, and only having been to the Orlando version of Universal, I would be really intrigued by this ride. Now from hearing all that and seeing the ride and pyrotechnics from this video, I kinda want to watch the "Backdraft" movie itself sometime...! I know many firefighters, and things like this only heighten my respect for their selfless courage. Thank you so much for another amazing video!

Nice video. We will be making a video putting together all of the original audio elements from the main (Set 3) show. Also, there was NEVER any pyrotechnics used in this show. The only elements were the gas/flames, sparkers (which were wired fed welders), and Oxygen for the crackling of the exploding barrels. Also, thank you for using a lot of our videos in your video. ;)

I will always associate the Backdraft theme music with the 1990s Japanese gameshow "IRON CHEF" which used several cues from the film's soundtrack. Probably one of the reasons the show continued to remain popular in Universal studios Japan.

Great video as always. Have you done one on the former Taganyika Tidal Wave at Busch Gardens Tampa yet? It was the second of three attractions that occupied that plot of land. It replaced the African Queen Boat ride which had a live actor in the African Village. It was then replaced by Tigris.

I remember being so terrified of backdraft but when I heard it was a movie I begged my mom to let me watch it but she said it was not a film for young kids like me so I waited until I was older and I felt so relieved to watch it .

When it came out on VHS in 1991 I watched it and I was only I think 8 years old and now I'm 31 years old now lol but yea it's actually rated R wasn't old enough to see it too till when I was either 8 or 9 years old

The beginning part was so emotional when the dad dies . and then the factory was so crazy. But after that scene was done my babysitter said sorry kiddo but this is too intense for you and I was so bummed. But I did watch it until I was 13 years old or 14 and I felt so amazed.

Can you consider doing Knotts Berry Farm's Timber Mountain Log Ride? This legendary ride recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and has inspired many other great rides such as Splash Mountain.
