Kongfrontation was a special effects attraction at Universal Studios Florida. Based on the 1976 film King Kong and the King Kong Encounter from the Studio Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood, the attraction would place guests face to face with a giant ape as they try to escape his path of destruction in New York City. In this episode will we take a look at the original attraction and how it helped create the Florida version, its success as the crown jewel of the park, its closure in 2002, and eventually its return as Skull Island: Reign of Kong.

They should build a Universal Classic theme park where they take all of the old rides and put them in their own park. There is definitely a fan base for that.

They really need more rides with tangible characters, while the screen base rides look cool, they will never have the emotional impact
@ThemeParkHistory

Kong/Jaws/ET all work because of those tangible characters you interact with in some form. While they can do more with screens, Universal needs to realize that real animatronics do so much more for storytelling, as it makes guests actually feel like they're there.

My kids and I went to Orlando for Spring Break for 12 years. King Kong was awesome. We rode the Mummy once. It had potential but was a boring ride... we kept waiting for it to actually do something. None of us had any desire to ride it again. Later we rode Everest and saw the Mummy potential realized.

One of the best attractions in theme park history-Universal really knocked it out of the park with this one. Not only a great showcase for special effects and animatronics, but also the attention to detail in the queue - starting from the pre-show videos, the graffiti on the subway, the streets and apartments, the smells. I miss it so much-my favorite Universal experience alongside Jaws.
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
When doing research on the attraction I never realized how much detail there was in both the movement of Kong but the fire effects as well. The queue is my favorite of all the Universal attractions, I grew up in NYC so whenever I was walking through the subway I felt like I was home in a weird way. It's a shame it only was around for 12 years, too young to be closed down!
@jasonthomas4872
@jasonthomas4872 6 жыл бұрын
Theme Park History I remember reading the effects were dialled down as well, to make the attraction more reliable and durable. There was another video where a former employee of the ride said one the main factors for the closure was the aftermath of 9/11 - as of course the ride was depicting the destruction of NYC. How true that is, I don’t know - but it’s missed by many, never forgotten, though!
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I heard that as well about the effects. It's a shame because you see how fluid the animatronics were when the attraction first opened. It's understandable though, if they didn't the ride might have closed even sooner.

I don't know man. Godzilla would be scary, but I'd find King Kong to be a lot more frightening in my opinion. He's still really big and powerful, but he's small enough to single you out of a crowd. It'd feel more personal, as opposed to being in the line of a natural disaster like if it were a Godzilla themed ride.

Not only do I love video games (including Nightmare Creatures) but this ride too. A rides operator at Universal told me that you can still see the tracks from Kong in The Mummy’s show building - although I’ve never been in there with the lights on to see for myself. I miss this ride, and although I really enjoy The Mummy, this is one of those removals that still hurts.
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
You are correct TPR, the tracks were built into the soundstage so removing them would have been time consuming and a lot of money, similar to the problem Disney has had with the yeti from Expedition Everest. It's a shame it's gone, it didn't feel like it was only there for 12 years.

Dude...This video is just pure bliss. This ride represents, in many ways, the seminal Universal Studios Florida experience. My first trip is something I can’t remember whole, more of a fantastic swirl of Universal properties (and those Universal just picked up the rights to use), and at the center of it was Kongfrontation. It’s not the same park anymore...Not since they took away Jaws. I’ll still love the place, like a child of my own, but the magic is gone.
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Billy! You summed it perfectly, as a child the three attractions I always remembered were Kong/Jaws/ET. They all stood out and had memorable moments you could remember. These days there are more screen based attractions at the park than you can count on one hand. I understand it's a business but eventually people aren't going to want to come to the park if everything is basically the same ride system.

It's really sad how they replaced animatronics with screens :/
@ThemeParkHistory
@ThemeParkHistory 6 жыл бұрын
I get why it's done: it's cheaper and less likely to break down when compared to animatronics but I think you will agree with me when I say the screens ruin the illusion of being part of the ride. You were actually terrified when you say these Kong animatronics back in the day, now I'm like "neat" when I see it at the end of Skull Island: Reign of Kong.
@spacebug30
@spacebug30 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, the animatronics give such an immersive feeling, screens don't do that for me. It's sad to see how 3/4 of all rides at Universal Studios Orlando are simulators these days. Of course some simulators use highly advanced technology and I don't mind 1 or 2 in a park, but I still prefer 'real rides'. A park full of simulators also isn't fun when the rest of your family has motion sickness so they can't go on them xD

One of my favorite rides at Universal is ET, because it really immerses you into the world in a different way than any of the newer "screened" attractions do. With that said, the really well-themed new attractions, like Harry Potter, does a really good job at that too, it's just not in the same way.

Excellent video as always! I’ve never seen some of these construction photos before. The queue, sets, animatronics, News footage...all of it together made for such an immersive experience. I remember my family always walking to this attraction first bright and early in the morning. As a New Yorker who lives a few mins away from the subway bridge that they took inspiration from, it fascinated my child brain lol. And as much as I LOVED Kongfrontation, I do think Revenge of the Mummy is an excellent dark ride/coaster, and Skull Island grows on me with each year.

Thank you so much Carlos! It was one of the few attractions where you became totally immersed into that movie's universe. There was something about being part of the city's atmosphere, hearing and watching the news reports of Kong's destruction and escaping through streets of NYC that made it feel just a bit real. And you're right, ROTM is one of few attractions that felt worthy as a successor of the original attractions at the park.

CarloisBuriedAlive the only thing I hate about skull island is that in the normal waiting line thr is a hole in the wall that employees go into wearing a tribal looking mask and me being a scardey pants and claustrophobic I was scared enough from the fake mummy's, and being forced to stand dangerously close to them was scary, but we noticed the hole in the wall and my cousin decided to shine the flashlight of his phone into the room and nothing was thr but a hallway, after moving forward a bit we were right in front of the hole, I was already dizzy and my sight was getting dark and I was fanning myself off, then a hand came through ye hole, and grabbed the cousin that had shone the light into the hole, he didn't get tak8len away but we all scream and I felt like I could barley stand, and if the employee would've listen I was saying how hard it was to keep walking forward, it felt like it was way over 100 degrees at that point, from the rest of the line until we got home I was paranoid of getting jump scared... I feel like they should tell their employees to wait and see how the person they r going to scare is acting, if they r red and sweating and r telling ppl around them it is hard to see then they probably shouldn't scare them... I'm always going into the single rider line for all rides unless I know how they line works and I know it's to kid friendly to jumpscare their visitors

This ride as fun as it was, was legit scary- if you’re a kid like I was. I remember being on the tram and the special effects made you feel like he was everywhere at once and then BOOM! He was right there and he did NOT LOOK FAKE. I sat on the side where he “grabs” and “shakes” the tram and screamed so hard that I left hoarse

Kongfrontation was beyond brilliant, definitely 1 of the best rides EVER made. Kongfrontation should have been one of those rides that last a good 20 years, would have been fine with Revenge of the Mummy taking over E.T like it did in Universal Hollywood. Thanks for the great video.

My parents always made sure to have me and my sister on either side of the tram, that way we both got to see Kong at least once when we rode it. I know these types of rides are expensive to make and cost a lot for maintenance but they are head and shoulders better than the attractions we get today.

If I ever hit the lottery and have millions upon millions of dollars; I'm going to bring back / have Kongfrontation rebuilt for the whole world to enjoy once again. It wouldn't necessarily be at Universal Studios in Orlando but somewhere here in Florida. I wouldn't be a little bitch and close it down either because of maintenance costs. I would have it built exactly the way it was. I would not worry about expenses / costs to operate the ride. This will always be my favorite ride ever. The world should be able to enjoy this ride still.

It was a worth replacement in my opinion, USF didn't have a roller coaster at the time and with all the problems Kongfrontation was having replacing it was justifiable. That being said, I still wish it was around. You always could ride Skull Island: Reign of Kong. It's not the same attraction but in some ways it's a spiritual successor to the original.

Thank you for watching! It's a shame to see the classic attractions that helped established the park be removed for other franchises.
